To think most people would prefer pubs and restaurants close in December than miss out on Christmas with their families again.

Plan C of the health secretaries plan if numbers continue to rise and masks and SD don't work is to ban people going around peoples homes again, surely it is better and safer as it will be less people together if they close bars and restaurants and let people have Christmas with family this year.

if pubs stay open, but can't see family.

People will just 1) ignore the restrictions on family or 2) meet their family in a pub.

Practicebeingpatient · 21/10/2021 12:10

@zafferana

I think most people would prefer that people get their bloody vaccines so we don't need to do either!
This. My yoga teacher has just cancelled her regular weekly class. Pre CoVid she was doing two classes a week and had a waiting list for every session. Now not enough people are attending to cover the cost of the studio. She was bemoaning the loss of income but doesn't seem to have joined the dots and realised that her being an anti-vaxxer is putting a lot of people off spending 90 minutes in a room with her.
@SeenYourArse that is incredibly unsympathetic.
This is a difficult situation for everyone.
@julieca im not even going to rustle up the slightest response to that stupid person! shes shown not one bit of intelligence or ability to read and comprehend what i actually said

TheVampiresWife · 21/10/2021 12:15

We have no friends or family. At Christmas, our social interactions are entirely theatres/restaurants/pubs/carol services. Last year we saw nobody at all over Christmas and barely left the house. I imagine that for those who have no friends or family and live alone, it's even more isolating.

Then there's also the fact that so many local hospitality business closed permanently after Christmas last year, as the busy festive period usually covers the cost of overheads in the quiet January-March period. Another Christmas lost would be disastrous for the businesses which weathered last year, but couldn't manage to do so again.

So, in answer to your question OP, no.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/10/2021 12:17

i think its more a case of people pushing the boundaries to the max they can get away with

It's legal, normal, ordinary behaviour @takenforgrantednana

It's not unreasonable to live like that.

SmellyOldOwls · 21/10/2021 12:17

No more closures, no more restrictions on seeing family.
If you're vaccinated you'll probably be fine. Small chance you won't but there's a small chance you'll die from flu or a car accident or one of many things that will kill you and we don't all hide in the house because of that.
If you're not vaccinated then presumably you've already decided to take your lumps and don't support restrictions.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/10/2021 12:19

Not a chance anyone will accept not seeing their families anymore.

Whammyyammy · 21/10/2021 12:23

I doubt restaurateurs, publicans, bar & waiting staff, brewery owners and staff, food suppliers and customers that are getting on with theirs lives woukd agree.

If you want to lock yourself away til spring, then fill your boots. Im.living my life

in normal times i.e pre covid times yes its normal, but not now its not! when caution must be used at all times. you might be fully fit etc etc but there are a lot of us that walk thr your lives that can be affected by your lack of caution. so refusing to wear a proper ffp3 mask, not washing your hands etc and the worst ones are those that cant even be arsed to wear a bloody useless mask correctly!

the rise in cases also co incided with when people started wearing homemade masks which makes me doubt their ability to even do the basic things of washing hands

Mummylewi · 21/10/2021 12:33

No I would not. If restaurants close, we cannot afford to lose my husbands wage, he is the sole earner.

Pythonista · 21/10/2021 12:34

Given that most people (certainly on this thread) have no intention of following any rules/guidelines anyway, it will be interesting to see how the numbers stack up in January.

However, if there is an upsurge in cases/deaths, I do hope those same people won't be whining about schools being shut etc.

youvemademyshitlist · 21/10/2021 12:35

I'd rather go to the pub than see my family tbh

KatherineJaneway · 21/10/2021 12:38

The only people who want bars and restaurants to close are people who rarely use them.

Yep. The effects of closing down businesses will affect and harm more lives
BigSandyBalls2015 · 21/10/2021 12:39

Christ @takenforgrantednana that's harsh .. "I knew she'd be the weakest link in our family" Shock. She sounds like she has stuck to the rules and is now out enjoying herself, good for her! Maybe she realises that would keep you away, and with that atittude I don't blame her!

belly0788 · 21/10/2021 12:42

Quite happy to not see the MIL at xmas :-)

BoredZelda · 21/10/2021 12:42

The hospitality sector is on its knees.

The hospitality sector can’t get staff. That’s why they are on their knees.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/10/2021 12:42

@Drumshambo

Schools are what are driving the latest Infections, so in theory it makes more sense for them to close. Hospitality is and has always been much safer than schools,who have little or no mitigations in place. Also the ludicrously of allowing children in to school who have positive family members beggars belief!
Schools absolutely should not close.
Wannakisstheteacher · 21/10/2021 12:43

No way. 100% rather have things open than face another boring Christmas with the in laws.

gukvguk · 21/10/2021 12:44

I do NOT think pubs should close.

I've got a couple of gigs booked for December which I wouldn't be sad to see postponed as I'm not sure I want to be in a large room with that many people.

Implement plan B now and pre-empt it so we don't need further restrictions.

lets just say she never has been in the last 10 years of her being with my son, "the sharpest knife in the drawer" thankfully my son hasnt taken the relationship any further even tho they live together and he owns the house, and praise be to god they dont have any kids! she hasnt got the capacity to look after a kid properly and would be in serious danger

its a shame really for my son, he could do so much better

TheKeatingFive · 21/10/2021 12:46

You sound charming

BigSandyBalls2015 · 21/10/2021 12:51

Thanks for the update @takenforgrantednana, you just get worse and worse!

Drumshambo · 21/10/2021 12:54

Schools are already closing because there are not enough staff to keep them open. I think as more adults who work in schools test positive, and have to isolate. this will continue.

UndertonesOfCake · 21/10/2021 12:55

@BoredZelda

The hospitality sector can’t get staff. That’s why they are on their knees.

There's more than one reason why the industry is on its knees.

Another Christmas lockdown would be the straw that breaks the camel's back for a great many businesses.
