To think most people would prefer pubs and restaurants close in December than miss out on Christmas with their families again.

Plan C of the health secretaries plan if numbers continue to rise and masks and SD don't work is to ban people going around peoples homes again, surely it is better and safer as it will be less people together if they close bars and restaurants and let people have Christmas with family this year.

You can chose to close pubs and restaurants to yourself. You don't have to go to either. Hide yourself away in your house if you like.

Let those of us with a better understanding of risk live how we chose to too.

KevinTheKoala · 21/10/2021 09:12

Closing pubs and restaurants would mean I couldn't afford Christmas - or any bills for that matter. Alot of us work in hospitality and we are already seriously struggling, shutting down again would destroy us. I would far rather have a smaller Christmas like we had last year and be able to actually feed my children.

LittleMysSister · 21/10/2021 09:14

@zafferana

I think most people would prefer that people get their bloody vaccines so we don't need to do either!
Agree with this.

My mum (66) got a text a few weeks ago saying she could expect her booster to be around 22nd Oct and hasn't heard anything since.

Everyone I know who is eligible is up for getting it and just waiting to be called.

ejhhhhh · 21/10/2021 09:15

So would the plan be to allow mixing between households in pubs, but not in homes? That seems a bit illogical but it’s what has happened before. I can’t see banning mixing between households within hospitality venues being part of a plan, as who would be in the venues if they did that? I think the people who mix regularly with just their households in pubs and restaurants are in the minority, and it wouldn’t be worth the venues even staying open. Regardless of if households are actually intentionally mixing within pubs and restaurants, they’re still all breathing the same air, so a plan that aims to prevent mixing households within venues is nonsensical. The basic message that sends is that it’s Ok to mix as long as you’re spending money. I don’t expect anyone will comply with that.

RusholmeRuffian · 21/10/2021 09:16

I would rather be able to go to the pub

user512 · 21/10/2021 09:17

I can forgo another Christmas with relatives to help the hospitality sector.

anon12345678901 · 21/10/2021 09:17

Nope. I'd prefer they stay open, mainly for the people who work in them and rely on them. Enough people have lost their jobs in the lockdowns. It's easy to say you don't mind if they close when you aren't the one relying on them bringing in your household income. You don't have to go to them.

The rules last time were a joke. I couldn’t meet my CEV mum in controlled circumstances in her home but I could meet her in a hospitality setting (which she was avoiding anyway due to chemo).

We didn’t see family last Xmas other than a brief garden visit to open presents.

This year my mum has recovered, everyone is doubled jabbed. I’m not missing anymore time with family. Especially given the fact our numbers is so high is down to the fact the Gvt relaxed all restrictions.

We could have been in the position Europe is in if it wasn’t for our useless Gvt and selfish idiots who refuse to follow basic infection control measures.

Don’t tell me I can’t visit my family as a result of the Gvt refusing to keep basic restrictions in place over the summer/autumn.

I’m done.

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 21/10/2021 09:22

YABVU. The hospitality industry couldn't cope with more closures. Plus my family are crap so I'd much prefer to sit in a pub with my mates.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 21/10/2021 09:23

I would rather they stayed open

But as others have said they are going to be unable to police peoples homes…like last year

Rooroobear · 21/10/2021 09:23

Absolutely not!!!! December is a huge month for the hospitality industry and most places where I am are all fully booked for Xmas day! Absolutely no chance. We have been hit so hard and are just starting to get going again thanks to our amazing customers coming in week after week and supporting us and telling us how amazing it is to be out socialising again. It’s lovely for some people who have no family and don’t see anyone.

girlmom21 · 21/10/2021 09:25

I'd rather people keep their homes and jobs than have forced niceties with people I see ones a year.

edwinbear · 21/10/2021 09:25

YABVU, DH works in a pub, we won't be having a Christmas if they are shut again.

Laiste · 21/10/2021 09:27

No!

I don't think ''most'' people want pubs and restaurants to shut at all. And as for don't mix with family? How bloody ridiculous.

FreedomFaith · 21/10/2021 09:28

@AnkleDeep

YANBU.

Family matters more than pubs. They aren't essential.

Will you be saying that still if all restaurants close in your area, or become too expensive for you to eat out at? What if not only the hospitality industry shuts down, but also transport like flights for holidays abroad? Still going to think everything else is worth it if you can no longer eat out, go on holiday or maybe not even shop in an actual shop because of what is essentially flu? You have to just stay home and shop only because no company can afford to bother with actual shops.

Not a great future for diversity really if we carry on like this. I think just to shut the experts up we should just go back to wearing masks again, social distancing etc, but that does also help keep everyone healthier too so it's a bonus all round on not spreading other viruses.

edwinbear · 21/10/2021 09:28

They are essential to my family to pay our bills.

Etinoxaurus · 21/10/2021 09:28

@2typesofjungle

My family suck, I'd rather go to the pub.
Grin Flowers if it wasn’t a joke.
Pluspoints · 21/10/2021 09:31

Lol what a closed minded post. What about all those pub and restaurant owners who are desperate for a good festive season so they can make some money? And all their employees too.

Groovee · 21/10/2021 09:31

I'd rather they stayed open. I felt safer at the pub having lunch than people coming to my door full of colds etc.

MonaCorona · 21/10/2021 09:31

I work in hospitality and I find your post deeply offensive and thoughtless, not to mention utterly unreasonable, @katedan

thisplaceisweird · 21/10/2021 09:33

It's clear that the British people can't follow rules or be sensible either way, nor can the British Government organise themselves enough to provide and maintain clear enough guidelines. So really, what's the point in closing things, just let you at it. At least you've stopped travelling to my lovely part of Europe now it's cooler.

TheKeatingFive · 21/10/2021 09:36

The OP is just another of the endless variations on the theme of this one thing that I want must to be allowed and everything else should be sacrificed to enable that
