To think most people would prefer pubs and restaurants close in December than miss out on Christmas with their families again.

Plan C of the health secretaries plan if numbers continue to rise and masks and SD don't work is to ban people going around peoples homes again, surely it is better and safer as it will be less people together if they close bars and restaurants and let people have Christmas with family this year.

@fourminutestosavetheworld

"I would be happy if the government brought back masks inside and isolating if a household member has covid."

I don't want the whole household to isolate just because one member of the family tests positive. Impossible to staff any business with such high rates of absence and so unfair to expect siblings to miss even more school just because one of them tests positive.

It is impossible to keep cases down without this though.

i just dont understand this need to go to the pub! never have and never will, if i want a drink i can do that at home, same with food, i would rather see my family over going to a pub, i dont want to endure other people little bratts (darlings!) and with the exception of one family member i know my family have more respect healthwise than most who go off out to a pub
Well doesn't the fact that we're all different make life more interesting? Hmm

Yes you can have a drink at home for cheaper, but sometimes it's more fun to do so in a pub. Take last night: we played badminton for two hours at the leisure centre then a bunch of us went on to the local pub and had a beer. We sat round the fire as the storm raged outside and had a chat and a laugh. It was nice - it was sociable.

That's why people like the pub.

I don't understand people who don't like the pub tbh Grin

LubaLuca · 21/10/2021 16:28

Err, nope, not at all. I have all sorts planned for December, and I don't want my local pubs and restaurants to go under. Also I'm not keen on my family.

RolloTomassi · 21/10/2021 16:28

Neither, and I can't understand the sudden clamour for restrictions when our economy is still so precarious. All restrictions have an impact on leisure and hospitality, even if they're "allowed" to remain open.

The vaccine rollout has gone well. Imposing restrictions just to avoid restrictions is madness.

HappyDays40 · 21/10/2021 16:35

Neither. I stuck by rules, masked, lateral flowed avoided family and friends. My mMIL is 92 my dad has cancer im having Christmas at my house withmy family.

Well I have ASD, don't drink alcohol and even before covid struggled in a room full of people.

tsmainsqueeze · 21/10/2021 16:55

I sincerely hope pubs and restaurants don't close , i can't imagine the worry and stress owners must be feeling at the moment.
But i will not obey any rules the government bring in stopping us from seeing family .
I don't know what the solution is but clearly the government don't either , i think we are pretty much on our own , so i will use my common sense , i am vaccinated , have had the virus and i am prepared to carry on with my life and take whatever chances / risks come my way .

And this is why people give me the side eye when I don't go to the pub.

No need to be so superior about it. I dont go to the pub for the reasons above but I don't look down on those who do

Apologies - I was reading the thread the wrong way and now get this comment Blush

Uk = "one of the world’s fastest but is now flagging, with 57.3% of the population fully jabbed and 69% partly vaccinated."

Well I know what I'm doing tonight now ... you've made me want a trip to the pub Grin.

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2021 17:20

@HesterShaw1 fucking hell you old rogue, fancy enjoying something as sociable as that. Call yourself a Mumsnetter. I bet you've got a loo brush and take in parcels for neighbours too.

Ponoka7 · 21/10/2021 17:21

@takenforgrantednana, keeping out of pubs, in your case is a charitable public service. Well done, keep it up.

1FootInTheRave · 21/10/2021 17:23

Don't worry Pythonista.

Guessed you'd missed the context.

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2021 17:31

Well, the Guardian article points out that the 18-30 group is the biggest reason out V numbers are falling.

They also point out that EU countries are going hard on V passports and kids in school being sent home if a kid in a class tests +ve and they haven't been vaccinated.

That's what the UK should have done weeks ago. If you chose not to have the vaccine that's fine, but you aren't going to be outside with those that have.

An ICU nurse told me this week that the beds are predominantly under 30's very unwell and wishing they'd had the vaccine which in this country is readily available to their age group.

MeanderingGently · 21/10/2021 17:36

No, no and no. Pubs and restaurants shouldn't need to close, hospitality has suffered enough as it is. We don't want more restrictions, lockdowns, furloughs or whatever. And, our family have lots of lovely things booked for December anyway, including meals out and so forth.

If there really is a need to do something, we should be putting all our energy into vaccinating everyone, vaccinating children, and yes, if necessary, bringing back mandatory mask wearing and so forth. It's doable if we're sensible; sadly, many people aren't.

gogohm · 21/10/2021 17:45

No I wouldn't because those "pubs" "restaurants" and "clubs" are people's work places not to mention not everyone has a family for a picture perfect Christmas anyway - for some that drink with friends on the 23rd December is the last person they see until new year.

By all means insist on double vaccination for over 18's and single vaccination for over 12's to enter but closing is ruining lives

Me neither. I would be entirely unaffected by a ban on private socialising, as I wouldn't observe it and have lots of family locally who feel the same. It's just moot for me.
TertiusLydgate · 21/10/2021 18:58

Me too. We had to cancel everything last year. There’s no way I’d do it again. We’ve got parties and dinners booked for every weekend in December.

Biker47 · 21/10/2021 19:37

They can fucking swivel on it if they think I'm letting them tell me who and how I spend my Christmas, I ignored it last year, will be doing the same this year.

Well done for playing your part in getting us to the peak of nearly 2000 covid deaths per day in late January.
Turkishangora · 21/10/2021 21:18

Neither, but given a choice I'd much rather a fun night out with friends than a forced stressful Xmas with family! Not everyone has that cosy family set up and some of us dread Xmas because of it. What makes the Xmas season bearable is the socialising with friends. But I wouldn't want people who do have a close family seeing them either, not that much of a Scrooge!
