To think most people would prefer pubs and restaurants close in December than miss out on Christmas with their families again.

Plan C of the health secretaries plan if numbers continue to rise and masks and SD don't work is to ban people going around peoples homes again, surely it is better and safer as it will be less people together if they close bars and restaurants and let people have Christmas with family this year.

I would be happy if the government brought back masks inside and isolating if a household member has covid.

Porcupineintherough · 21/10/2021 15:32

@Teateaandmoretea well the restaurant that my neice works in has just had to shut again because of high levels of staff sickness. Its not so simple as saying "lets stay open regardless of case rates" is it? At some point customers will start staying away too, this is already happening amongst my friend and social groups. My work has just opted for a Christmas bbq rather than booking the function room at the pub as we'd usually do.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 21/10/2021 15:35

@Winter2020

I vote no to either. I know Covid is real and I know it's killing people but these measures are destroying lives too. I'd vote we keep going with vaccines, ordinary social distancing/masks and handwashing etc. People that want to be locked down go ahead and choose to stay at home.
I agree. Those that want vaccines have got them. If you don't want to go to the pub then don't, if you don't want to see your family, don't. But the rest of us should be able to take our chances.
WhatATimeToBeAlive · 21/10/2021 15:35

Nope, I'd rather mix with friends AND family in pubs and restaurants in December.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/10/2021 15:35

Social distancing means shutting down parts of the economy again - theatres, cinemas, nighclubs, children's outdoor residential centres, soft play. And it means pubs and restaurants have to limit the numbers of customors they can have.

Another shut down will be the end of business and charities across the country. Reserves are gone.

MissChanandlerBong81 · 21/10/2021 15:36

Well there are some less disruptive measures that could be introduced before closing an entire sector.

It’s important to remember that pubs and restaurants aren’t just buildings that spit out food and drink. They’re businesses owned and run and staffed by real people who need jobs and money.

BrizzleMaverick · 21/10/2021 15:45

Seeing family or pubs restaurants closed, I would choose friends and family but if they ban that what is stopping you meeting you friends and family in the pub or restaurant??

NailsNeedDoing · 21/10/2021 15:45

Seeing as the majority of people in hospital are unvaccinated, I don’t understand why there would be a need for more restrictions. The vaccine is a valid option for the vast majority of people and it works, so those of us that have been vaccinated would gain no benefit at all from restrictions but would still have to suffer the negative consequences.

People are free to stay in, wear masks and avoid social situations if they want to, let the rest of us make our own choices.

The government won’t bring in significant restrictions anymore I don’t think because it will either crucify our economy and livelihoods even further, or everyone will ignore it and they will show themselves up as having no respect at all from the public.

cheninblanc · 21/10/2021 15:48

No thanks. I don't see family over Xmas but I do love going out and my dd works in a pub. It's not a everyone wants to see family size fits all.

MadeItOut21 · 21/10/2021 15:53

People who are worried should get the vaccine and then the booster shot when eligible. I have no sympathy for the unvaccinated and I'm not wasting precious years of my life locked down because of some selfish arseholes.

Pythonista · 21/10/2021 15:55

Mandatory masks are sadly pointless. Just like last time, those who didn't want to wear them claimed exemption, thus making those genuinely exempt the subject of dirty looks and suspicion

Oblomov21 · 21/10/2021 15:56

Nope. Not prepared to comply with that.

Teateaandmoretea · 21/10/2021 15:57

@Porcupineintherough none of its simple and I haven't said it is.

Hiding away from a virus and long term 'social distancing' is no solution though.

Oblomov21 · 21/10/2021 15:59

I read only 61% vaccinated. Compared to other countries 76% and 79%.

Why are we so low? Everyone I know is. I'm having my booster next week,

Spidey66 · 21/10/2021 15:59

No, I'd rather go to the pub. You can see family there!

FinallySomeNormality · 21/10/2021 16:02

I'd rather none of the above.
It's time to live with the virus.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 21/10/2021 16:02

According to this (www.travellingtabby.com/uk-coronavirus-tracker/) it's 86.1% of everybody over 12, and 78% overall population with at least one dose.
RAFHercules · 21/10/2021 16:07

YABVVU (and should have enabled voting).
I reckon half of MN would prefer a pub to spending Christmas with their MIL.

TableFlowerss · 21/10/2021 16:09

People won’t comply regardless of what they do.

You’ll have those with their holier than though attitude but the reality is, if they didn’t have people in gets family etc that were vulnerable or they may be vulnerable themselves, then chances are they would wash their hand of it as well.

The moral compass suits because they’ve got a vested interest in calling other people selfish but the reality is, if they weren’t vulnerable etc they’d likely feel the same.

It goes back to do individual circumstances

takenforgrantednana · 21/10/2021 16:11

i just dont understand this need to go to the pub! never have and never will, if i want a drink i can do that at home, same with food, i would rather see my family over going to a pub, i dont want to endure other people little bratts (darlings!) and with the exception of one family member i know my family have more respect healthwise than most who go off out to a pub

1FootInTheRave · 21/10/2021 16:12

Would anyone actually comply with either option?

I think most didn't last year tbh.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 21/10/2021 16:14

"I would be happy if the government brought back masks inside and isolating if a household member has covid."

I don't want the whole household to isolate just because one member of the family tests positive. Impossible to staff any business with such high rates of absence and so unfair to expect siblings to miss even more school just because one of them tests positive.

People enjoy different things than you! A shocking concept, I know.
TertiusLydgate · 21/10/2021 16:15

takenforgrantednana how sanctimonious. I can totally see why you don’t like going to the pub 😂

Just because you don't enjoy it doesn't mean others don't!

I bloody love going to the pub. I love going to our local, to watch live music, for a pub tea, to a cocktail bar.... and so on!
