How soon after 6 months can people book boosters?

I had my first Covid jab start Feb, 2nd start April, so I’m just a bit over the 6 monthsfrom last jab now. DH was offered to book his booster 3 weeks ago, pretty much on the 6 months. But no one has contacted me and when I try to book online it says I’m not eligible and wait to be contacted. I was in the CEV group so I was done well in advance of my age group, though I am in the over 50 group anyway. GP surgery will not discuss Covid boosters in any shape or form. Do I just need to be patient? Am I being too hasty? I’m a teacher and in contact with an insane amount of Covid at the moment so justifiably anxious about waning immunity!

@ajandjjmum

I think people are waiting because that is what we were told to do at the beginning of the pandemic. There's nothing to stop anyone who's eligible for any vaccine from getting online or on the phone to book it.
My mum had her second over 7 months ago and is 80+, but she has not received an NHS booster invitation so cannot book online or via 119. I know that our local vac centre has good capacity atm. It is so frustrating.

Does that sound wrong, @ajandjjmum?

Does that sound wrong, *@ajandjjmum*?
That sounds really wrong @SparklingLime. Have you called in to the Vaccination Centre and asked if she can do a walk-in appointment?
SparklingLime · 21/10/2021 14:42

Thanks, @ajandjjmum. I can’t find a number for my vaccination centre. The CCG don’t have any information about boosters on their website or Facebook. If you phone 119 there is a recorded message saying they cannot book you until you have your “NHS booster invitation”.

Nowmum43 · 21/10/2021 14:55

Does anyone know how long you have to wait after covid for the booster?
I'm 40's but presume I can get it now as I'm past 6 months? Well except I currently have covid, not sure if I have to wait until I can have it now.

28 days after Covid.

Have you googled 'walk in centres in ???????' - some local authorities include them.

You're not in the West Midlands by any chance?! Grin

Nowmum43 · 21/10/2021 15:15

@ajandjjmum thank you

SparklingLime · 21/10/2021 15:26

I’m not W Midlands, @ajandjjmum but I’ve just realised I’ve been counting from mum’s first vac - she’s actually only 5 months since second. So it makes sense. Thanks for your help.

ajandjjmum · 21/10/2021 15:35

That explains it - won't be long before her booster though!

SparklingLime · 21/10/2021 15:42

No, but a month and it’s high where we are now. Hence the panicking and getting in a muddle!

countrygirl99 · 21/10/2021 15:47

My mum had her booster locally last weekend but my dad's invite will only let him book mid week in another town 10 miles away. So he needs to wait for my brother to recover from covid so he can take him. Dad is 94, and CEV. Mum is 83 and not CEV. They live together, have the same GP and had they 1st and 2nd jabs together. 🤷‍♀️

Oblomov21 · 21/10/2021 16:45

Watching. I've got mine booked for Monday. Dh's is allowed as of next Friday.

Do you work in healthcare or have an underlying health condition that makes you eligible etc? If you’re under 50 and healthy/don’t have the required occupation then you can’t have a booster at all.
itsgettingwierd · 21/10/2021 17:05

I'm not sure I'll be offered one although I'm eligible.

This is because as school staff I had mine done that way.

I'm entitled to a booster because I'm ds carer.

Yet there's no one I can contact to ask because the vaccination hub no longer is set up and we aren't allowed to contact GP.

Nowmum43 · 21/10/2021 17:13

@RachC2021 I'd seen that if you were 6 months past your 2nd vaccine you could get the booster?
I work in an Sen school so we had our first vaccine done in January.
I'm fine if I'm not eligible just now as hopefully having covid now will have given me enough immunity.

Jimmychoo69 · 21/10/2021 17:25

@NeverBeenNormal I went for my fly vac at my local Gp surgery last night and they were giving COVID boosters at the same time. So now have 2 painful arms but just thankful to get my booster!

Jimmychoo69 · 21/10/2021 17:27

Flu not fly, cannot type properly now.

julieca · 21/10/2021 17:34

I had no idea there were walk-in booster clinics until today. I googled and in my City, there is one that opened today for the first time.
But it says you cant have until 4 weeks after a positive covid test either.

julieca · 21/10/2021 17:39

I do think though middle-class people are good at using resources including access to transport for further away walk-in clinics, while many of the most vulnerable people including people in care homes have still not had a booster.

RedRiverShore · 21/10/2021 17:40

Janet Street Porter was talking about this on Loose women yesterday, she hadn't been invited so went to a walk-in and showed her card and got her booster, she was advising that others do the same if the six months was up and not wait for an invite

NeverBeenNormal · 21/10/2021 19:13

Too many jabs make you go a bit doolally. Glad you got done!
Timescale · 21/10/2021 19:18

I see the nhs website has been changed so that you can only book online if it is six months and one week.

I feel like the timescales keep getting extended.

PuzzledObserver · 21/10/2021 20:33

My 2nd dose was 28th April. Got a text today inviting me to book for a clinic on 30th October.

OP - Samir Javid said yesterday that if you are more than a week past your six months you can go on the NHS booking site or ring 111 and you will be able to book.

SleepyMathematician · 22/10/2021 08:51

@julieca

Absolutely. I’ve googled walk in clinics and there are some - but my nearest are well over 30 miles away. They only do them the other end of the county for some reason. However, I’m fed up with “computer says no“ (have now been contacted, well after the 6 months, but STILL can’t book on the system and 119 can’t help). So I’m probably going to schlep over there tomorrow.

But, I can do that. I’m young enough that I can still drive a 70 mile round trip, and I have enough money that I can afford it. My parents in their 80s don’t have that option. Even if I took them it would be too much for them. And so, the most vulnerable go unprotected whilst the younger, fitter, middle classes “shout the loudest” and get it done. And the gaps in quality of healthcare widen even more.
