Why do I have Covid if I had both jabs ?

I thought it was all a government control thing to say you can still catch covid once jabbed, but here I am and I have it. I caught from my DS getting it from school. The class has multiple cases, I tested when he did and I was clear. Then symptoms started 3 days later. DH has it too. So far DD is clear, I don't know how.

I just don't understand surely you're either immune or not? Or is it a different strain?

‘A government control thing’?

Bunn5 · 06/10/2021 14:57

The vaccine was never designed to stop you getting Covid. It is designed to stop you from becoming very unwell with it and reduces your chances of needing hospital treatment.

hotelharibo · 06/10/2021 14:58
Hmm

It's always been stated the vaccine is to prevent severe disease

Feenie · 06/10/2021 14:59

You don't watch much news, do you?

Transmission is reduced, not eradicated. However, you are statistically hugely less likely to end up in intensive care or dying.

Lbnc2021 · 06/10/2021 14:59

It doesn’t always prevent severe disease though, my father had both vaccines and still died of covid

GinasGirl · 06/10/2021 15:00

I'm also double jabbed but have just tested for it as feel absolutely shocking and have two children in class who have just tested positive.
I won't be surprised if I do have it as I haven't felt this unwell since my first jab 😅

waterlego · 06/10/2021 15:00

I thought it was well known that the vaccine does not actually prevent the virus. Obviously not.

I’m a bit taken aback that you had a vaccine without having even the most rudimentary grasp of the purpose of it.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 06/10/2021 15:02

The vaccine gives you better immunity - as in, your body knows how to respond better, so you’re less likely to get very sick, or die.

It doesn’t make you immune.

Mynameismargot · 06/10/2021 15:02

Well, it looks like you have debunked your own conspiracy theory. Maybe next time before jumping to mad conclusions you will take the time to listen to the science.

RadioSixMusicLover · 06/10/2021 15:02

Blimey.

@Bunn5 well what other jabs do we have they don't stop you catching it? I can't think of any. I mean the flu jab doesn't always predict the strain, but they don't say you'll get a bit of flu so they. Pretty rubbish really.

MrsRobbieHart · 06/10/2021 15:02

Dear lord!! How can you possibly have thought the vaccine gave you total immunity?

TheWoleb · 06/10/2021 15:03

This has been covered over and over and over again. On the news, on mumsnet, on social media on "magazine" TV shows etc.

How do you not know this?
And what "government control thing"?

They were very clear about the vaccine. What are you on about?

HuckleberryJam · 06/10/2021 15:03

I've known for months and months it protects you from becoming severely ill/hospitalised with covid rather than from catching a milder case.

TheWoleb · 06/10/2021 15:04

@tellittomeslowlyandclearly

Considering that we've never had a successful vaccine for a Coronavirus, they did pretty fucking well.
Grow up.

Bunn5 · 06/10/2021 15:05

@tellittomeslowlyandclearly the flu jab is actually similar to the Covid jab! It does not stop you from getting flu, but prevents you from getting seriously ill from it Confused

HuckleberryJam · 06/10/2021 15:05

How can a vax that prevents you getting severely ill or hospitalised/dead from an illness be "pretty rubbish really"

riveted1 · 06/10/2021 15:05

I'd be interested in seeing you develop a safe effective vaccine for coronavirus in less than a year Grin

Most vaccines don't have 100% efficacy (in preventing infection) - >50% is the criteria on which they need to show in clinical trials.

The 'flu vaccine, depending on the year, shows a comparable efficacy. It depends on the pathogen they're targeted against - coronaviruses are notoriously difficult to design vaccines against.

Are you actually kidding? The flu jab can be as low as 50% effective some years.

frazzledali · 06/10/2021 15:09

Why on earth would you think it was a 'government control thing'? That's a very depressing thing to read. Many other vaccines are indeed the same, just because you can't think of any, doesn't mean they don't exist.

There's a really good article on vaccines and why they don't always prevent disease here, it's really interesting. theconversation.com/coronavirus-few-vaccines-prevent-infection-heres-why-thats-not-a-problem-152204

tellittomeslowlyandclearly · 06/10/2021 15:10

Uhhh I have heard that you could still catch it, but I didn't think I would catch it once jabbed. I thought it was all a load of bollocks.

I would say that having Covid is comparable to having swine flu, which I didn't have a jab for.

So is it fair to say whatever strain I have the jab wasn't made for ?

Please make sure your children are in school as much as possible OP.

Well then what you heard was bollocks. Where did you get your information from….

Vaccines never offer 100% protection and unless you’re tested afterwards for antibodies, you won’t know if the vaccine has actually worked.

For some people the vaccine won’t work at all. It just works for most people.

I really wish people would educated themselves.

MajesticallyAwkward · 06/10/2021 15:13

What government control did you think it was?

It's been really well publicised the vaccine isn't total immunity, neither is the flu jab. If you misunderstood that it's nothing to do with the vaccine or anyone else.
