Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

I thought they said they could adjust the vaccines to fight off new strains, quite rapidly . I know lots of double jabbed people who have caught covid recently.

frumpety · 30/09/2021 22:00

I have never been terrified of either covid or the vaccinations, had both jabs, will get my booster and flu jab, but I still wear a mask in shops etc, it doesn't bother me because I still have to wear them at work. I see lots of different people every day, so I wear mine to protect other people, not everyone can be or is fully vaccinated, so its my way of trying to not be the person who spreads it to one of those people.

It was never really intended to stop people from catching Covid. It was designed to prevent hospitalisation and death. It’s not a sterilising vaccine.
Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 30/09/2021 22:01

@lovelyupnorth

Never did care about corona virus really.

Had my jabs followed the rules for others benefits. But it’s never remotely worried me.

Ditto!

Ilovesandwiches · 30/09/2021 22:02

I don’t wear a mask unless I enter a premises which still specifically says you need to. I don’t mind wearing one if I have to but I don’t wear one unless necessary. I am double vaccinated and to be honest just living live as normal as I can.
On the other hand, some people still choose to wear a mask and that’s absolutely their choice and should never be made to feel awkward about that

Benjispruce4 · 30/09/2021 22:02

If most of the vulnerable and at risk have been double jabbed, who is dying? Daft question but I do wonder.

Lightswitch123 · 30/09/2021 22:03

@Overthebow

No longer bothered. Just getting on with my life as normal now and have been for a while. So is everyone I know. I’m especially not going to wear a mask in toddler groups as I can’t properly interact with my baby.

IggysPop · 30/09/2021 22:03

Yes I m bothered.

I am a mask wearer - especially in public transport. I wish it had become more normalised for peak cold/flu season, rather than being a covid ‘thing’. I was an emergency admission to hospital with flu pre-Covid as a very fit 42 year-old. My lowest point was hearing my daughter ask if was going to die.

frumpety · 30/09/2021 22:04

@Benjispruce4 I know lots of double jabbed people who have caught covid recently.

Getting covid doesn't bother me as much now I am vaccinated, having to go to hospital does, needing a ICU bed bothers me even more, being vaccinated reduces the chance of that happening.

Seventeen44 · 30/09/2021 22:05

Because as this thread shows OP, most people don't give a shit about others - the fact that people are still dying in their thousands genuinely doesn't seem to bother them. How wearing a mask to the shops actually prevents people from "living their lives" I honestly cannot fathom. It's hardly a massive imposition FFS! But the wE hAvE 2 gEt bAk 2 NoRMaL aT sUm PoiNT crowd clearly disagree...

Seventeen44 · 30/09/2021 22:07

If most of the vulnerable and at risk have been double jabbed, who is dying? Daft question but I do wonder.

 • The people who haven't been vaccinated
 • Those who have serious underlying health conditions
 • The unlucky ones
SoftSheen · 30/09/2021 22:08

Yes, I had to don a mask in Tesco, but it seemed a pretty pointless and arbitrary task when I'd just finished a 6.5 hour day teaching in my 'class bubble' of 26 NOT socially distanced children

The main purpose of your mask is to protect other people. If you were to catch COVID from one of the 26 children, your mask might just prevent you from passing it on to an 80 year old ECV man out doing his weekly Tesco shop.

The unvaccinated are mainly dying but also (for example) an 80 yesr old who is vaccinated has the same risk of dying if they catch Covid as an unvaccinated 50 year old The efficacy of the vaccine also wears off over time hence the need for boosters, particularly for those who are older and at increased risk. Hopefully the boosters will bring people Back up to 95 per cent plus protection
FatAnkles · 30/09/2021 22:12

I work on public transport, so I've been exposed loads of times. I don't really care anymore. I wear a mask at work because I'm told to, but it's virtue signalling really. I wash my hands, have had my jabs, caught it twice...meh, whatever.

StressyWoman · 30/09/2021 22:12

I am living life as normal but LFT regularly and still wear a mask depending on the situation.

user213654 · 30/09/2021 22:13

I agree OP.
I feel I am the only one left who doesn't particularly want to catch Covid.
It is getting increasingly hard to keep that choice.
None of the tradespeople coming to the house wear masks - we keep having to ask. I think if you are going inside a client's house, it is the least courtesy you can extend. At least ask if the client would like you to wear a mask. I hate having to request that other people do. People are more likely to take off their shoes to protect another person's carpet than wear a mask to protect another person from Covid in their own home.

So, if you're going to somewhere like a toddler group, you are self selecting people that are just getting on with things
This is true. If you interact with other people, those with the lowest protection will determine the risk for everyone else. So a lot of people aren't doing much. Those who are doing things no longer care so that is the default mode.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/09/2021 22:14
@CecilieRose So you just want everyone to get it at a slower rate then instead of all at once- the NHS is not overwhelmed because even at 1000 deaths a day they were still not overwhelmed.
Of course the NHS is overwhelmed. Primary care is in meltdown with far, far too few GPs. Hospital ICUs are still full of Covid patients. Capacity to provide urgent care and major surgery is significantly affected. Massive waits for ambulances.

And it’s only September.

We’ve got to get on and live with it..... for the most part I’m not wearing a mask, I did today as I have a sore throat which I’m 100% sure is my period cold as I’m due on. I kept. It on as a precaution. But I’d choose not too any other time. I’ve never been one to stand close to people and when someone stands to close I’ve always moved away and that was pre COVID.... so i will continue with that,

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/09/2021 22:17

@Benjispruce4

It’s a possibility though *@TheGrumpyGoat*. Does anyone know if the booster has been reworked to fight off Delta?
They have not. Boosters are being given from exactly the same stock as the original doses.
Sunshinegirl82 · 30/09/2021 22:18

The number of hospitalisations is coming down at the moment, have been for a few weeks.

TableFlowerss · 30/09/2021 22:19

Couldn’t care less if I get it. 40, size 10, no underlying conditions etc so far more chance of being killed in a car accident became I spend about 80 a month in my car…..

Mumwithbaggage · 30/09/2021 22:20

I'm 57, asthmatic and double jabbed. I teach. I don't want to catch it but more specifically I don't want to pass it on to my 93yo (double jabbed) dad so we are all getting on with our lives but being as sensible as possible. Yes I will carry on wearing my mask in the supermarket,i f only to protect the workers there from the germs I may have picked up during the day.

It causes me no grief or hardship and it may just protect someone more vulnerable than me.

Pepperama · 30/09/2021 22:21

We're still running at 1000 more deaths a week than we usually see at this time of year. And no, not all old folk who'd have died anyway, as then it'd be just as normal. Hospitals can't see cancer patients as full with covid patients. Ambulance and A&E waiting times are massive, and people die because they can't get seen.

Wish people weren't rushing to pick up the disease and were careful till NHS is past the backlog.

FatAnkles · 30/09/2021 22:25

Pp who spoke about enforcement of mask wearing on TfL services: I have never seen a police officer or enforcement agent turn anyone away from TfL . Ever. Just given advice.
