Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

Nope and I'm glad

pelosi · 30/09/2021 21:45
@pelosi this attitude is what I most despise. Total lack of common sense and responsibility.

@Yogsgirl when it's no longer killing nearly 150 people per day and risking another wave which overwhelms the NHS. It will eventually become endemic and fade into the background. We're not there yet. We're not over it because you happen to be sick of it.
Whilst I despise your rigidity and judgemental attitude.

People were told there is no evidence that masks work.

I wore my mask as directed, I took it off as directed.

Expecting people to wear masks when mandated when they were told there is no proof they work is the height of ignorance.

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 21:45

And if you CEV you will be vulnerable to other viruses, not just covid- funny how these people didn't wear masks to protect themselves from regular flu

CecilieRose · 30/09/2021 21:45
@CecilieRose I don't think you understand how viruses work- keeping cases low in the short term won't make the virus less of a problem in the future. All it does is delay the inevitable, that it will become endemic- Britain is ahead of the game- once the majority of people catch it then we will have a degree of herd immunity and the virus will become less of a problem and just another seasonal virus like flu or colds.
Britain is ahead of the game? LOL. Such arrogance to think that one of the countries that has totally fucked up the pandemic response and has almost one of the world's worst death rates is 'ahead of the game'.

pelosi · 30/09/2021 21:45

*when not mandated

BungleandGeorge · 30/09/2021 21:46

@NotMyCat

I was pretty annoyed today. Pharmacy is 2 people in at a time which was fine. Except now nobody is wearing masks and they're still restricting it to 2 people, so I stood outside in the pouring rain with about 7 other people waiting I mean I don't see the logic in that Confused (I'm still wearing a mask)
Masks are still mandatory in healthcare premises inc pharmacies
CecilieRose · 30/09/2021 21:47

@pelosi there has been plenty of evidence that masks work. You just probably haven't bothered to read it. They are still mandated in most of Europe, and cases much lower there, and things are much better.

The delusion on here is funny.

MarshaBradyo · 30/09/2021 21:48

@Yogsgirl

I don't understand how people think life will ever be normal if we have to protect the vulnerable- it doesn't matter whether we all get it now, or get it later- until everyone has had it cases will keep climbing- whether that be now, or later.
Yes I agree.

If a double vaccinated person gets it now or Feb what difference? As long as hospitals have capacity if needed.

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 21:49

@CecilieRose So you just want everyone to get it at a slower rate then instead of all at once- the NHS is not overwhelmed because even at 1000 deaths a day they were still not overwhelmed.

TheGrumpyGoat · 30/09/2021 21:50

@Benjispruce4

I think with all this spread there could be a new strain before long that might dodge the vaccine entirely!
Sarah Gilbert says this is an extremely unlikely scenario.
KurtWilde · 30/09/2021 21:50

Here we are again at each other's throats. I've had covid, I'd rather not catch it again but if I do, I do. At some point everyone has to start taking personal responsibility. The mask wearing, social distancing can't go on forever, as much as some of you would love it to.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 30/09/2021 21:51

I'm concerned that there are obviously lots of things we don't yet know about the virus. Studies are already showing links to diabetes, neurological issues, issues with sight/hearing/taste/smell/touch, organ damage etc and that scares me that we seem to be so complacent here. It concerns me that all kids are expected to get it with people focusing on it may only be a sniffle, even though they can still go on to have really horrid outcomes. It's almost like we are trying to get all kids infected.

We have taken a very extreme view in the UK and many seem unfazed about the numbers of deaths.

I'm also hoping we don't end up having to lockdown again because instead of layers/Swiss cheese mitigations, we refused to do anything but vaccinate.

Benjispruce4 · 30/09/2021 21:52

Well there’s a Tokyo strain under review at the moment I believe.

Yogsgirl · 30/09/2021 21:52

We are all vaccinated except for children and those that either can't be or won't be! It's not going to get better!

Warhertisuff · 30/09/2021 21:52

@CecilieRose

Yep...it's like living in an alternate universe being in this country. I just returned from working in Switzerland where masks are mandated in all indoor spaces, all public transport, supermarkets, etc. This is how it is in most of the rest of the world.

We're at over 36,000 cases today and 137 deaths...this is absolutely nowhere near over. Do people just NEVER learn? We could just wear masks and distance and take precautions and we'd all be able to get on with life but no, we're probably going to end up in yet another lockdown with Christmas ruined, because people just cannot accept that viruses don't go away just because you want them to.

The longer we try to suppress Covid, the longer it will take to get to the point when it's at an endemic equilibrium - on the basis we can't eliminate it, we'd just be delaying the inevitable. Or do you think we should be masked up forevermore?
CecilieRose · 30/09/2021 21:53
@CecilieRose So you just want everyone to get it at a slower rate then instead of all at once- the NHS is not overwhelmed because even at 1000 deaths a day they were still not overwhelmed.
That's funny, because friends and family are having routine ops and appointments (including for cancer) cancelled because of shortage of staff and/or beds. And we're barely even into autumn yet.

TheGrumpyGoat · 30/09/2021 21:53

@Benjispruce4

Well there’s a Tokyo strain under review at the moment I believe.
There are many, many strains under review. Viruses mutate… it’s what they do. That doesn’t mean it’s likely that it will mutate enough to evade the vaccines while still being highly contagious/deadly.
MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 30/09/2021 21:53

I wear mine-cases are going through the roof, even double jabbed.

NotMyCat · 30/09/2021 21:53

@Yogsgirl

I did a lot of what I do now I'm vaccinated for flu, and pneumonia I avoid unwell people and people know if they have a cold/cough/sore throat not to visit me If someone is ill and coughing in work I sit in the corridor But flu is less contagious and it's not a novel virus. I have had flu and recovered but then I've had a cold which ended up in pneumonia so no, I don't want covid and I will do everything I can to avoid it as I can't fight infections
Benjispruce4 · 30/09/2021 21:54

It’s a possibility though @TheGrumpyGoat. Does anyone know if the booster has been reworked to fight off Delta?

NotMyCat · 30/09/2021 21:54

@BungleandGeorge no signs, nobody enforcing it. Pharmacy is attached to the doctors (who are being really strict in masks)
Pharmacy staff - one in mask, one not, and one wearing it on chin. Out of the 2 people already in there and 7 queuing there was only me wearing one but still enforcing 2 people in and out

TheGrumpyGoat · 30/09/2021 21:56

@Benjispruce4

It’s a possibility though *@TheGrumpyGoat*. Does anyone know if the booster has been reworked to fight off Delta?
It doesn’t have to be… it already fights off Delta. It significantly reduces the chances of hospitalisation and death, which is exactly what it was designed to do.
MarshaBradyo · 30/09/2021 21:56

@Benjispruce4

Well there’s a Tokyo strain under review at the moment I believe.
Japan has had lower cases than U.K. - it shows even with suppression new strains will appear.

And yes agree with pp there always will be new ones

Quartz2208 · 30/09/2021 21:56

It is a interesting one - France for example has a 1/6 cases (with 1/2 tests we do) but more people currently in hospital. Switzerland proportionally to population has a 1/3 of the cases but 70% ratio of hospitalisations. The point being it is difficult to compare as different countries work it in different ways.

What is clear here is that cases are stable - they are actually slightly down this Thursday on last not rising faster

imnotdrunk · 30/09/2021 21:57

Ive had a nasty cold sore this week so have been wearing it out of the house. I'm getting funny looks
