In November time?

We were told this kind of rolling lockdowns was a strong possibility back in March 2020.

I don't remember that. I do however remember "3 weeks to flatten the curve".Hmm

VaccineSticker · 07/09/2021 06:47

@TheReluctantPhoenix spot on.
As if some people haven’t learnt anything in the last 18 months.

MummyOf4Kids · 07/09/2021 06:49

I've just seen on the news they're considering an October 'firebreak' lockdown if cases remain high.
Who knows if it'll happen but I don't think many will comply

chocolateorangeinhaler · 07/09/2021 06:52

@idontlikealdi

Fuck knows.

I think there is going to be a mess for the NHS once flu season hits though.

So you work in the NHS and know do you?

Well I do. A massive acute hospital. We haven't sat there doing nothing. This year has been worse than the peak of last year.

We can set up an extra ITU ward in hours now. Have equipment coming out of our ears. Staff are trained well on PPE use and working whilst distancing. This didn't happen overnight it's been a long hard slog.

We are building new ortho and children's theatre's to tackle the backlog of electives. Have cleared one level of priority surgery already too.

fluffythedragonslayer · 07/09/2021 06:52

No. There won't be any more lockdowns.

Warhertisuff · 07/09/2021 07:07

Errrrr….the majority of hospitalisations are in the unvaccinated. How does that prove the vaccines don’t work?

If that's the case, if further restrictions are needed then they should be focussed on the unvaccinated. I don't like vaccine passports, but they're a lesser evil than a lockdown.

Warhertisuff · 07/09/2021 07:12

@TheReluctantPhoenix

And before people chant ‘COVID is not the black death’, without medical treatment it will probably have an IFR of 3% or so, and people these days just won’t accept that if they have a choice.

Look how many rich bankers etc are aghast at returning to offices, even vaccinated and with an NHS with capacity.

The IFR may be as high as 1% without vaccine - though probably more like 0.5% - but the vaccine reduces that % around 20 times!
woodfort · 07/09/2021 07:13

Can’t they just start the booster programme already? Why the delay?

People won’t tolerate another lockdown unless it looks like the government is doing everything it can. I also can’t see the point honestly.. people will socialise in their own homes, just let them socialise in pubs and restaurants and bring some money into the economy.

SkinnyMirror · 07/09/2021 07:17

Though it is reassuring that they appear to be considering a half-term circuit breaker.

Which area's half term though ...... it's different depending where you live.

It was in the Imperial paper on March 16th last year, the one that said lockdowns were the only way to prevent the NHS getting overwhelmed.

It suggested rolling lockdowns until a vaccine though. Not indefinitely!

m0therofdragons · 07/09/2021 07:30

I think we could face some more restrictions. Some people seem to think that because their fed up the pandemic should be over. Sadly the hospital cases don’t agree. I’ll be really pissed off if it’s half term though - time off with my dc with restrictions will annoy me having had my holiday cancelled for two years in a row. I know holidays aren’t essential but they’re a priority and I’m sad about not being able to plan and look forward to travel.

Quartz2208 · 07/09/2021 07:42

We are just repeating the same mistakes though - doing a circuit break when one area needs it in all areas, loosening and then realising we have just suppressed it down and ending up worse

Lockdowns (not mitigation measures) are not a solution they are when you can think of what else to do and get something down. They aren’t even that effective now unless you go all in like China or have the geography that works like New Zealand

GoodnightGrandma · 07/09/2021 07:42

Do they not realise that the extra week off in October will impact the school flu programme that they want done to help reduce pressure on the NHS ?

PopcornMuncher · 07/09/2021 07:45

Ah love how people put money before life

Seeing as you need money for survival that's not a clearcut distinction though.

This. Pretty sure poverty is the biggest indicator for ill health.

There was a thread the other day where parents of young children said that their children had had little to no input from doctors/health visitors in their entire lives. I don't know why everyone doesn't find that absolutely terrifying. Sad

Those of you who are pro lockdown, are you going to be horrified when the multiple enquiries begin into a probable increase in children murdered at home because support was non existent?

User875906 · 07/09/2021 07:47

Not really bothered if there is, I shall be back from holiday then so it won't spoil that

OnTheBrink1 · 07/09/2021 07:51
@MercyBooth,

Normal family life has always been decided by our ability to look after people. If you want an NHS, then NHS beds could be the limiting factor.

What a lot of people (like you) fail to realise is that when risk to lives exceeds a certain threshold, people lock themselves down anyway if they can afford to (exodus of the rich to country homes during the Black Death??).

What do you want to happen? Oxygen running out? People gasping to death in tents, untreated (save for morphine, hopefully)?

It looks like we should be introducing distancing and mask wearing measures sooner rather than later, and then maybe we could avoid a lockdown.

And we should vaccinate teens (and younger children) as soon as possible. They take it home and give it to older parents and grandparents, some of whom end up hospitalised.
No it hasn’t!!? My parents have been alive since the creation of the NHS and never once in their lives have they been ordered to not see family or not to go out.
Normal family life as in seeing other members of family and leaving the home as never been limited before for any reasons!

southeastdweller · 07/09/2021 07:51

Well, if non-essential retail, hospitality etc is forced to close or severely limit numbers there will be no choice but to comply.

Boo fucking hoo that for one or two weeks that I won’t be able to go to Waterstones and sit in Caffè Nero. I wore my last mask on July 18th and if the mandatory law comes back will lie if challenged and say I’m exempt. Moreover, we’re not like some parts of Australia, with police and military patrolling streets, so indoor mixing will mainly carry on and isn’t that where most infections occur? I expect the circuit break to happen next month but don’t see much point to it.

By the wise people of mumsnet of course! People do spout such crap. No one knew or knows what lock downs there would be and when.
ButteringMyArse · 07/09/2021 07:58

Presumably you would comply if there were fines as previously?

I'm not the poster you were addressing here Iannistunut but I'm interested in your sentiments. Do you really think the fines serve as an across the board deterrent?

I accept that they do for some people, but the paucity of police numbers alone means you'd have to get very, very unlucky to draw attention if you're just quietly having people in your house. The police don't even have a right of entry to check whether you're breaching covid regs if they don't have a warrant. It really is incredibly reliant on people wanting to comply. Take it from someone who hasn't for some time.

I meant the business fines, which were considerable. There were some high profile cases in my town.

Wasn't talking about individuals.

GreenLakes · 07/09/2021 08:17

Tbh if we have another lockdown we may as well pack it all in, as we’ll be in lockdown every winter.

The vast majority of the population are double vaccinated- we are as protected as we’re going to be. We now need to get on with it.

ButteringMyArse · 07/09/2021 08:35

Oh I see what you mean iannistunut, but even then I'm not sure I'd assume. Plenty of businesses still going on unofficially round our way last time! Not all of them obviously, limited to the things that could be done in private homes, but the police did nothing.

I remember reading a bbc article in April 2020 iirc with quotes from Chris Whitty and he said he anticipated a period of 18 months - 2 years of tightening and then easing of restrictions.

notgotthehelp · 07/09/2021 08:39

@Antsinyourpanta it's been more than 18 months and we have vaccines. So if there are still on the cards then that's it forever - constant threat over us each winter
