Would you visit Scotland this weekend?

Maybe I’m worrying for no reason but with the steep rise in cases and all the talk of potential reintroduction of restrictions (even a circuit breaker mentioned), would you visit this weekend? I’m due back to work next week which in my main worry really. Am I overthinking?

@NannyAndJohn you love a good pandemic don’t you?

2bazookas · 26/08/2021 22:20

@NannyAndJohn

No.

Their cases are at a record high and rising rapidly (6 day doubling time). It's carnage up there.

I live in Scotland and see no carnage.

Visitors, bear in mind we still wear masks (in shops, public transport and indoor public venues) and the drink-drive limit is only 50. Much lower than England.

NannyAndJohn · 26/08/2021 22:21

@dementedpixie

Shows the link has been broken between cases and serious illness/death
Not broken, weakened.

@NannyAndJohn

It seems as though my choice of words has touched a few nerves.

By "carnage" I refer to the fact that cases have quadrupled in four weeks, culminating in yesterday having the largest number of cases in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Why on earth would your wording touch any nerves, when it was so nonsensical?
BuggersMuddle · 26/08/2021 22:23

Well what are you planning to do up here? I live in Scotland, am on holiday in another part of Scotland and see no carnage. But then I’m doing outdoorsy stuff, eating in beer gardens, avoiding crowded places and masking up as needed. If you’re planning to do a load of indoor & large crowded events then perhaps the risk is slightly higher in some parts of Scotland but it’s high in the UK generally.

2bazookas · 26/08/2021 22:23

@Coldbit

I need more milk but I live in Glasgow. Do you think its safe to go out?
No point, all the cows died in the carnage.

Maybe you had the situation at Kabul airport on your mind and mistyped eh?

Easy to confuse the two situations

Keepitonthedownlow · 26/08/2021 22:43

Don't see how a circuit breaker could be held without UK government funding for closures? Furlough ends sound so it would have to be before that, if at all.

😂 Your words were ridiculous!

Yep cases have spiked up here mostly in non vaccinated/1 dose and children.

Hardly a suprise though given we had stricter lockdowns which has meant less natural immunity for the young! Our schools are also back over 2 weeks now so lots more testing going on which picks up more asystomatic cases.

Also despite the cases the hospital numbers are still low BTW!

But if the headline grabbing stats keeps the likes of you away then all the better and less of a queue at the ice-cream shop for me 😊

DiscoDown21 · 27/08/2021 06:58

What’s the best repellent for the midgies? I get bitten to buggery very easily…..

Really hope there’s not a circuit breaker. I’m double jabbed and happy to come up. I’m careful and it’s just two of us. Happy to wear a mask too as needed.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/08/2021 07:01

Got lots of replies, though, didn’t she? Loads of attention and the thread became all about her for a bit. It’s almost as if that part is more important than the accuracy of any particular view.

Avon Skin So Soft for midges.

PARunnerGirl · 27/08/2021 07:13

@NannyAndJohn “It’s carnage up there”

Is it, aye?

PARunnerGirl · 27/08/2021 07:14

@DiscoDown21 Smidge. I’m not sure you’ll get it down south but once you’re up here it’s in most outdoor shops. They also have their own website with a midge forecast

Usual2usual · 27/08/2021 07:44

Didn't touch a nerve was just totally incorrect thats all.

Carnage means the killing of a large number of people.

Cases are high but hospitalisations and deaths remain low. Therefore one could argue that there is no justification for any kind of further restrictions as hospital numbers are nowhere near what they were pre vaccination.

Life is as close to normal here as it has been since Feb 2019 and the sun is shining.

Smidge is great I used it for the first time this year as we holidayed you should get it in mountain warehouse or suchlike . I think Gardrn centres here sell it too.

Mrsjayy · 27/08/2021 07:50

Sorry was replying to Discodown

BroccoliFloret · 27/08/2021 07:51

I think different repellents work better for different people. Midges are a curse on warm, still nights, mainly in the highlands and west coast. Not an issue in other parts of the country.

You can get hats with nets hanging from them which are effective enough.

Smidge! Plus a midge headnet and if really bad tuck your trouser legs into your socks and and old pair of tights if it's warm and you want to wear short sleeves! They can't bite through tights so when bad we make tight sleeves 😂
ApolloandDaphne · 27/08/2021 08:43

I am Scottish on holiday in England. The area I am in currently has the same numbers as the area where I live in Scotland.

You might like to look up the dictionary definition of 'carnage'.

Very true, she reminds me of the poster that was obsessed with Trump before the US election and posted endlessly about it - claig? It's sad really, when the pandemic ends they'll be lost without the (fabricated) drama.

No nerves touched. Numbers have risen, as expected, due to restrictions loosening and schools returning which also brings increased testing. Expect the same in England in a couple of weeks so you can froth about that too.
