my next door neighbors caught it at Christmas.

We had a team meeting and 2 of the team had recently come back from a multi- stop trip overseas - including to somewhere that was later recognised to be a COVID hotspot at that time. They both felt 'rough' at the meeting but put it down to the effects of travel and jet lag.
Wow that was an extremely stupid move by management having an indoor meeting with those employees.
I'm a teacher in a large school - most of the staff who have had it have caught it from each other.
I thought staff were well spaced out within a school. In the DC school the hall is a lunch-pods for teachers the staff room is closed.
I'm lucky I've missed it so far, dreading the DC returning September.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 22/08/2021 10:25

How can you pinpoint where you caught it?
Surely it’s a guess!

I’m guessing I caught it on public transport commuting into London ... late Dec 2019. I know it wasn’t supposed to be in the UK then but I’m pretty sure what I had was Covid looking back.

CirqueDeMorgue · 22/08/2021 10:25

No idea, I've been out and about a fair bit.

DelphiniumBlue · 22/08/2021 10:26

I don't know how you can tell where you got, unless you had literally just one contact in preceding 10 days. If you went on public transport, or into a shop even once, it could have been from that, and not from your workplace/family member.
I thought I'd caught it from a particular child at school, but was told much later by their parent that what they'd thought was Covid, turned out not to be.

Abraxan · 22/08/2021 10:47

When I had it: Almost certainly from school, where I work.

Of people I know who've had it:

Colleagues (plus several infant school pupils and parents) - our school
A number of 16/17y (friends if friend) - local festival
DD's friends (18/19y) - festival elsewhere and nightclubs
DD's university friends - at university - 2 from their placement in wards, others caught it from them
My nana - from hospital
A friend (and poss her husband, awaiting results) - family wedding

I know others who have had it and the source is less obvious or not definitely known, but most likely through close contact socialising at home or in a busy bar, such as when watching football - and then passed on to household/close family

lightand · 22/08/2021 10:48

Church

Abraxan · 22/08/2021 10:52

We have no idea how 19y has never caught it as she has been in proper close contact with a number of cases from last summer onwards. She went to busy bars prior to vaccination. She is now fully vaccinated and is going to festivals and nightclubs.

She had an antibody (for virus acquired only) test in June and it was negative.
She plans to do another before returning to university, out of curiosity, to see if she had is asymptomatic this summer following a number of festivals, clubs, bars, etc. All her LFTs (and PCRs after known cases - outside of 48 hours so no SI needed before rule change) have remained negative.

It's as if she's got some natural immunity so far, and now topped up with vaccination antibodies,

Ugzbugz · 22/08/2021 10:54

Just in the shops in seems and other person outside in crowds or inside shops with a mask on. We was together and I never caught it.

Abraxan · 22/08/2021 10:56

I'm a teacher in a large school - most of the staff who have had it have caught it from each other.

It went quickly round the staff at my school. This is despite social distancing from one another. We think the children must have been spreading it between us. At that point in infant schools there were no masks, no SD, etc and some staff were able to cross bubbles. We also have a number of sibling groups across the school. We know of some children and/or parents who tested positive who were definitely in the affected classes at the 'right' time to make this likely.

DuchessOfDisaster · 22/08/2021 10:58

@cricketmum84

My sister caught it last month watching football in a pub. I don't know anyone else who has had it.
Three work colleagues caught it in the pub here too, during the Euros.
CoastalSwimmer · 22/08/2021 11:02

I work in a school. Right back at the very start, in March 2020, we had a full staff meeting and lots of people in it were coughing, that horrible dry cough. Shortly after I and many others went down with coronavirus.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/08/2021 11:09

I think most likely from a neighbour (who can't recall being ill), or an outside small chance of from a parcel. Those are really the only two likely sources.

ByTheSea · 22/08/2021 11:10

I caught it in March 2020 and I'm quite sure it was at a crowded pub at which my musician daughter was gigging.

Shallwegoforawalk · 22/08/2021 11:43

Folk I know:

Some youngsters from a pre-Christmas party that descended into carnage (that well exceeded numbers allowed at the time)

Friend who probably caught it at a kids activity last summer, she's a parent helper and this was her most likely point of contact

Friend thinks hers was at a small recent wedding as she's not been anywhere else much recently, waiting to hear others results.

itsgettingwierd · 22/08/2021 11:45

I know more people who have tested positive for Covid in the last 2 months than I have in the entire pandemic.

Interesting you say that.

I was bored yesterday and decided to look at how many cases of covid have been recorded in my area on the dashboard. 7800 in population of 120k.

Accepting that last year at initial height testing was low so this may be slightly skewed but 1/3 of all recorded cases have been in the last 2 months.

@EmeraldShamrock - I teach in a special school, so there are 4 or 5 staff in each class, and our classrooms are not large. We were in class bubbles but still sharing 2 toilets between 35ish staff in each department. Often it takes 2 staff to change a child in a very small bathroom. Social distancing wasn't possible, and we were fully open to all 210 pupils. We have no ventilation as the windows don't open and if we opened the classroom doors, the children would abscond.
FrogFairy · 22/08/2021 12:14

June 2021 - student DS and his housemates emptied their house and moved home at end of tenancy. He then heard a housemate was positive and a few days later got it himself. He passed it to his dad.

Houseplantmad · 22/08/2021 12:29

@Wishineverchangedmyname not Bassfest but Boardmasters in Cornwall.

DD has just told me that some who are likely to be positive, having had contact with those who now are, are off to Reading or Leeds festivals but won't test as they don't want to not go to these festivals. I despair!

MrsLCSofLichfield · 22/08/2021 12:40

Most likely in the office, March 2020. About a dozen of us got sick at the same time, similar numbers in DH's office.

Siameasy · 22/08/2021 13:04

I actually don’t know
Went to a nightclub on the Friday tested +ve on the Weds so it could be that!

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 22/08/2021 13:41

I think I caught it early before testing was rolled out when working, community front line health care. A facility I had been in had a known outbreak and hospital admissions where they were tested and confirmed
I know 2 different groups of people caught it en masse. One at a works party so the whole place was unable to operate and one group in a small restaurant.

cricketmum84 · 22/08/2021 21:08
  • How can you pinpoint where you caught it? Surely it’s a guess!*

It depends how often you mix with other people I suppose. My sister was pretty sure it was from the last in Cos that was the only place she had been in the last two weeks before she tested positive.

It's harder I guess if you are going into the office, using public transport etc.

Standrewsschool · 22/08/2021 21:12

Had it the week before first lockdown. Not sure where I caught it. However, work colleague had tiredness bug three weeks before and her daughter a coughing bug three weeks before then, so wondering whether they had early, mild forms.

LyndaLaHughes · 22/08/2021 23:54

I know so many who have caught it (in a badly hit area of London) and nearly all cases have been from schools. I've had it ,so many of my colleagues have had it, so many of my children's teachers have had it as have many of my children's friends and family members- all from schools. Interestingly a friend who is a hospital doctor never caught it at work - but did catch it from her daughter after she caught it from school. Others I know have caught it from work but it's staggering how many cases I know have been school related.

Pinkchocolate · 23/08/2021 00:15

@Wellbythebloodyhell you can ask a question without being nasty. They visited their elderly, vulnerable parents for a week without testing when they had clear covid symptoms.
