Good on them. Hope all other universities follow suit.

“Shocking. Can’t believe we’re resorting to bribery and coercion.”

I can’t believe we’re having to resort to inducement for people who simply can’t be bothered to get the vaccine.

bumbleymummy · 07/08/2021 22:39

Maybe it’s not that they ‘can’t be bothered’ and they just don’t need/want it?

As has been said upthread, this is not really likely to be aimed at people refusing the vaccine for their own long and hard-considered reasons.

@IchHabeSiebenFlowers

Vaccinations have been available for those turning 18 in the next 3 months for almost a month now! Not in my area they haven't - my soon-to-be 18 year old was only allowed to make an appointment last week.

The prize draw will take place at the end of November to allow students time to get vaccinated
My brain skipped over that in its self-righteous indignation! Bit of a lesson in psychology for me there.

the lesson for you would be to read the article before commenting. I simply quoted the sixth paragraph verbatim; hence the use of italics

Can’t believe you are such a lone voice in this and people think is ok. Statistic after statistic show the risk is so low for this age group and sky released stats showing vaccine or not you still carry the same viral load. Yes, there may be a reduced likelihood of catching it but if you do it will be mild in these age groups . The risk/ benefit doesn’t stack up
moonbedazzled · 08/08/2021 00:34

I'm fully vaccinated but I'll do it again for £5,000. Where do I sign up?

If they're not having it on principle, they should be prepared to go without being in a £5,000 raffle.
my0123 · 08/08/2021 01:05

The vaccine has messed up my menstruatal cycle.
I wouldn't advise anyone in their 20s to have the vaccine until we know the long term effects of it.
I work in healthcare and have been double jabbed because I had to, but I regret if now.

SaharaFlower · 08/08/2021 01:08

This is bullying the more poor students into a choice they aren't happy with.

Actual Covid has messed up menstrual cycles for many women.

It's also been linked to erectile dysfunction in men.

The vaccines are tested and trialled. We have more idea of their long term effects than we do about SARS-Cov-2. Particularly as it's possibly human modified in a lab (bioweapon research?) escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Daffodil Here's your prize for being the first person to trot out the word "coercion". Congratulations!

moonbedazzled · 08/08/2021 01:35

@SaharaFlower

This is bullying the more poor students into a choice they aren't happy with.
Why? In previous years there was no covid, there was no raffle and 'poorer students' managed without an extra £5,000. If they managed in previous years, why wouldn't they this year? There's no bullying although it might be more tempting. But no ones being forced to have the vaccine. Any principled stand they want to make, is up to them. In Israel young men were offered a bottle of beer to have the vaccine. No forcing - just made,an offer. I'd rather get 5,000 myself.
SaharaFlower · 08/08/2021 01:54

Moonbed: In previous years, they may have just left without. But throwing the opportunity of money in front of poor students is coercing them.

SaharaFlower · 08/08/2021 01:55

If you stop any unvaccinated going anywhere, that isn't forcing on technicality. It is bullying though.

moonbedazzled · 08/08/2021 02:09

It's not coercive. These university students are our brightest and best. Surely they are capable of having a principle and not being bought off.

changingstages · 08/08/2021 04:42

It does make me cringe that there has to be a monetary benefit for taking a vaccine that millions of people simply haven't had the opportunity to have yet. But if it pushes the vaccination rate up, then good on them I guess.

It doesn't make me cringe as much as those whining about 'coercion' on here though.

User7458 · 08/08/2021 05:48

What about those that are already vaccinated, also where is the money coming from as universities are always pleading poverty.

People are going to wait for a better offer surely with all these bribes, similar to how I do with my Amazon shopping basket. Better prizes down the line maybe.

Arcminute · 08/08/2021 05:51

I expect it will come off the VC’s salary

Lupinhere37 · 09/08/2021 00:12

@GrealishHairband my DD was in the same position. I called the “what happens if you think you’ve been forgotten?” number and DD was immediately allocated an appointment.

Caveat, we are in Wales….not sure where you are but I assume every area has something similar?

NeverTalkToStrangers · 09/08/2021 00:24

There are c.17,000 students at Sussex. If they’re prepared to be persuaded to take an unwanted medical intervention for an expected payout of three quid then student poverty is clearly worse than I thought. It might, on the other hand, persuade some indifferent but lazy students to get their act together and make the booking.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 09/08/2021 00:27

I do like the fact that they’re not specifically bribing the latecomers, but giving an equal chance of a reward to the students who were really quick off the mark.

TinaYouFatLard · 09/08/2021 00:32

Disgusting.

Peteycat · 09/08/2021 22:20

Nobody should be paid to have a medical procedure.

This is truly disgusting. The injections are still in clinical trials but there are people frothing at the mouth for the younger generation to have this trial drug. Please think about what you are saying.

Not a "trial drug" nor a "medical procedure"

No one is being paid to have it

everythingthelighttouches · 09/08/2021 22:36

Payments and incentives to take part as a volunteer in medical research are absolutely normal practice and not uncommon.

And that is for medicines going through phase I, II, and III trials, never mind those which are already authorised by MHRA and trialled in millions of people worldwide.

So if you are going to get upset about that, you should probably look into all medicines to see if you have an ethical objection to something you’re already taking or have previously taken.

Excerpt from the HRA ethics guidance

“ 3.9 Financial or other incentives, of themselves, are not considered coercive nor present an undue inducement to a potential participant where the risks and burdens involved are those that a competent, adult participant might reasonably accept for no payment.”
