Good on them. Hope all other universities follow suit.

How ridiculous.
Surely the University has better things to spend it's money on.

IchHabeSiebenFlowers · 07/08/2021 17:23

Bit unfair for the August-born students.

XenoBitch · 07/08/2021 17:26

It implies the main reason people can't be vaccinated is that they can't be arsed. Something like this wont do anything to address the other reasons why someone is hesitant, such as health anxiety and similar.

rosie39forever · 07/08/2021 17:28

I would think this is illegal under the gambling and gameing laws, pretty sure it's discriminatory to refuse to award a fairly won draw prize on vaccine status.

NightmareLoon · 07/08/2021 17:33

@IchHabeSiebenFlowers

Vaccinations have been available for those turning 18 in the next 3 months for almost a month now!
Kite22 · 07/08/2021 17:35

It also implies that the vaccine is immediately available to everyone the day they turn 18, which isn't the case.

My dd, for example, couldn't have the vaccine when he age group first could, as she actually had COVID at the time.

Nonmaquillee · 07/08/2021 17:37

I can’t believe people need a financial incentive to receive a vaccination. I just can’t get my head around it. It’s a bloody PRIVILEGE to receive vaccinations.

Their argument is no, they haven't. They believe it will increase uptake, and the cost to them of having to go back to on-line teaching would be far greater. They are doing it for financial reasons.

Why would under 25s have more health anxiety than other age groups?

There isn’t much benefit for them, but a chance of winning £5k, SIGN ME UP.

Their uptake will be high. Very high.

I think we've discussed this on a previous thread @XenoBitch but of course this isn't targeted at those with health anxiety or other reasons. There are lots of campaigns ahead which aim to reassure people worried about vaccination.

This is yes, for those who are ambivalent and haven't got round to doing it. It's not going to persuade someone who is adamantly against being vaccinated.

The prize draw will take place at the end of November to allow students time to get vaccinated

Can be done 3 months prior to turning 18y - has been for a while.

And soon to be available for all those aged 16-17 too.

Knittingupastorm · 07/08/2021 18:14

I wouldn’t be that surprised if that was true for a very large number of unvaccinated people, especially younger ones.

Tealightsandd · 07/08/2021 18:20

It's a good idea. At the end of the day these aren't normal times and low vaccine take up impacts the health and wealth of society. Needs must.

Other countries have been offering incentives for ages. Israel was offering free beer or a meal, America too - and some US states are also giving lottery tickets.

People can say unfair, but far better for individual and societal health and wealth to offer vaccine incentives than to do as Rishi Sunak did. Losing the taxpayer billions in lost stamp duty tax in order to worsen the homelessness public health emergency and further inflate the house price bubble.

I bet young people would prefer a vaccine lottery ticket over Sunak pushing house prices further out of reach for FTB.

Oblomov21 · 07/08/2021 18:25

Shocked at this. Where is the budget for this coming from?

IchHabeSiebenFlowers · 07/08/2021 18:26

Not in my area they haven't - my soon-to-be 18 year old was only allowed to make an appointment last week.

My brain skipped over that in its self-righteous indignation! Bit of a lesson in psychology for me there.

I would genuinely like to see a survey done that looks at the reasons why
GrealishHairband · 07/08/2021 18:32

My soon to be 18 year old hasn’t been called by the GP and you can’t book until they’re over 18 on the national booking system. Still.

Kite22 · 07/08/2021 18:33

I don't have any stake in this, but dozens of threads on here over the last month or two have highlighted that this message hasn't got through to many (most?) of the walk in centres, and our GP certainly hasn't got down to inviting U25s

Tealightsandd · 07/08/2021 18:34

@Oblomov21

It's cheaper than hospital treatment.
Knittingupastorm · 07/08/2021 18:52

It's cheaper than hospital treatment.

Well, not to the university it isn’t.

PopcornMuncher · 07/08/2021 20:29

Ridiculous. It makes them look desperate

bumbleymummy · 07/08/2021 20:34

Shocking. Can’t believe we’re resorting to bribery and coercion.

everythingthelighttouches · 07/08/2021 22:29

£5000 will be a drop in the ocean compared to the cost of running courses online or worse, so sort of mixed teaching.

There is also the monumental cost snd impact of a University is forced to go back online and looses the fees of significant numbers of students because it is not what they signed up for.

everythingthelighttouches · 07/08/2021 22:30

Spelling!!!

So sort = some sort
Snd impact of = and impact if

FFS!
