Well that's it then. We have to cancel our holidaySad. This year feels like I have been cursed. I've had two eye operations to stop me going blind, and now this.

DH & I have been doubly vaccinated but the DC are too young.

Aaaaaarrrrggghhh Angry

OP, you can use the app to make a judgement on the level of risk. How many days have you been told to isolate for? The isolation period is 10 days so if the app has told you to isolate for 7 days you know the contact was 3 days ago. You can also double check this in your app settings. Then you can decide how at risk you were... in a supermarket wearing a mask and not getting too close for too long - pretty low risk. In a cafe mask off for an hour - then higher risk. If you decide to go ahead and go on holiday, take extra precautions - wear a mask indoors, avoid close contacts, do regular LFTs and get a PCR at the slightest hint of being unwell.

Greenmarmalade · 05/08/2021 10:58

Absolutely go.

I’m a teacher and if I’d had the app I’d be constantly in isolation.

Wear a mask indoors. You’ll not put people at any greater risk by going.

christinarossetti19 · 05/08/2021 11:05

That sounds like a good plan OP.

Enjoy your holiday.

Chickychickydodah · 05/08/2021 11:07

Don’t cancel it sounds like you need the break. Delete the app and do a lateral flo test and go enjoy your holiday 💐

Maggiesfarm · 05/08/2021 11:07

@ILookAtTheFloor

Is it the app?

If so just delete it and go.

Yes!

Warning to everyone - do not have the app! I've never been 'pinged' in my life.

Doublestar · 05/08/2021 11:11

Only on MN are people actually still taking any notice of this crap. Everybody, including the government, knows the track and trace was never fit for purpose.
I don't even know anyone in RL who has ever downloaded the app - or given their real details when going into a cafe/restaurant etc.

Use some critical thinking - are you capable of independent thought? Would you honestly cancel a holiday because a (very inconsistent) app has told you to isolate when you have no idea where/who you could've caught covid from? Or if you even have it/will develop it?

The elderly are vaccinated, lots of people are walking around symptomless and spreading it anyway. It doesn't really matter though because people are not generally getting very ill or dying from it anymore. The government have ditched masks and removed nearly all rules - they are practically saying to us "go on, go spread it around - we need to reach herd immunity before the winter".

If you would cancel your holiday and disappoint your family, more fool you OP.

Ikeepbuyinganimals · 05/08/2021 11:21

It's important you're comfortable with your decision so if that means not going then don't go.

But personally I'd take a box of tests, test every day before going out, wear a mask inside, probably alter plans so I'm mostly outside and not inside (to minimise spreading if I do have it), get takeaways instead of eating out, and I'd go. At this stage, most vulnerable folk have had their jabs, those who haven't are being cautious, and you can do lots of stuff outside away from humans. Make the most of either decision you make.

I agree with much of this, but I have to say, I think many people sign into a place with the app/their mobile phone. My DH does EVERY time. I think he is desperate to be 'pinged' so he can have a fortnight off work! I mean, he just spent 10 out of 13 months on furlough between March 2020, and April 2021, but he still wants a fortnight off!
ExpressDelivery · 05/08/2021 11:22

I don't think that's true. For a start, even on MN no one is taking any notice if this thread is anything to go by.

In my experience , people are taking notice when it suits them still, hence the problems caused with absence from work. Not so much when their holiday's in jepody.

Bryonyshcmyony · 05/08/2021 11:25

@AngryWhompingWillow

As an employer I can't wait until they bring in the rule that no isolation necessary if you are double vaccinated.

earthyfire · 05/08/2021 11:26

I've never had the app, if I did I would delete the app and go!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/08/2021 11:27

i believe you still need to test after 16th August daily

I think that will be recommended and not mandatory

I don't blame you! It's a stupid 'rule.'

SoupDragon · 05/08/2021 11:28

Why does anyone download the app if they are just going to ignore it when it does what it was downloaded for?

Exactly this. Its getting tedious now.

No more tedious than the people who don't read the reasons people give.

The government have basically admitted it is flawed and are reducing the sensitivity of it. Do you really think it is sensible to follow the isolation advice (and it is only advice) if the positive contact is your neighbour who is the other side of a solid brick wall?

ExpressDelivery · 05/08/2021 11:28

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

And it will only be a problem if you are actually ill, which the vast majority of pinged people never are.

100% this! ^

SofiaMichelle · 05/08/2021 11:30

Exactly.

If it was "I've been pinged and I'm supposed to be at work" the replies would be unanimously against ignoring it and then some moaning about employers not being forced to offer full pay to anyone isolating.

The idea seems to be: pick and choose rules/advice to follow, according to what suits your current needs. Blame the government when anything goes wrong.

caughtinanet · 05/08/2021 11:32

@UDontDans2Tekno

I heard (obvious disclaimer friend of a friend...) that someone went to a cafe at 11, and then got pinged as someone who went a 3pm tested positive

Hearing stories like this does make you wonder!

(I'm fully vaccinated, still wearing masks inside so not a denier/anti vax)

That just couldn't happen though as bluetooth doesn't hang around in the air of the cafe Grin

As soon as you type "friend of a friend" we know it's nonsense. All I'd be wondering about is why I'm friends with a stupid person Grin

ExpressDelivery · 05/08/2021 11:34

The app doesn't tell you where or what time contact happened, so that can't be true.

lastcall · 05/08/2021 11:39

I think you're making the right decision, OP. Just keep testing.

I'd also delete the app or disable it except for hospital visits.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2021 11:40

Does the app just tell you the day of contact?

SofiaMichelle · 05/08/2021 11:40

@ExpressDelivery

The app doesn't tell you where or what time contact happened, so that can't be true.
And the 'venue check-in' part of the app doesn't advise you to isolate, so it can't be that either. Hmm
TheWindOnTheMoon · 05/08/2021 11:41

I've already made a decision what to do.DH got some LTF tests today, we've done a test each, they were negative. We will take boxes of tests with us. Thanks to the supportive and understanding posters on here. To those who haven't bothered to read the full thread, do so before you decide to be unpleasant. We are a CV family, DH & DS are asthmatic, and I have regular hospital appointments for my eyes, following Surgery two months ago. If you stil! feel the need to be nasty, choose another thread, not someone who is already struggling with anxiety. I won't post again on here, I know what we're doing.

I was holding my tongue but can't help leaping in as a teacher. To the PP who said she would 'constantly be pinged' if she had the app as teacher. I am a teacher, have always had the app, and have never been pinged.

30000 new downloads of the app last week I believe.

santabetterwashhishands · 05/08/2021 11:53

I would do lateral flow and if negative I'd go on holiday x
I was pinged and I hadn't even left my house in days ,it turned out to be next door neighbour testing positive and it pinged me as a close contact by living Nextdoor 🤷‍♀️. We had had no contact in weeks 🤷‍♀️
