Also, numbers where I am (where they have been some of the highest in the country for weeks) are falling quite sharply and consistently.

Sshhhhh! We don't like to talk about anything positive here only doom gloom and impending lockdown are welcome Hmm

Helpel · 25/07/2021 18:58

No surprise when millions of high school children are no longer testing twice a week. Ridiculous meaningless statistics. I don't know why this isn't being said! But if it means people think it's a good news story and we can get back to a real normal then all good!

MrsSlocombesPussy · 25/07/2021 18:58

....well we haven't had time to see the effects of opening up nightclubs etc..

RainbowCrayons · 25/07/2021 18:59

Excellent news!

DogsSausages · 25/07/2021 19:03

Maybe this is what happens when people turn the ping off, less cases get reported and the figures are always lower at weekends and on Mondays.

TheVampiresWife · 25/07/2021 19:04

Nightclubs opened a week ago so infections should be starting to trickle through. Schools have only been closed since Friday so doesn't account for six consecutive days' decrease.

Hunt for the negatives if you will, I'll look for the positives Grin

Also, it's funny how the statistics are 'meaningless' when they show cases decreasing, and are absolutely 100% to be believed when they're rocketing Confused

Ah a more positive thread some really gloomy posts out there

Spot on!
Helpel · 25/07/2021 19:07

Schools where we are closed 9th July, many more closed on 16th. Don't get me wrong, I am pleased as anyone to see a decrease, because I'm fed up of the fear high case numbers seem to breed (despite high vax rates) but think we need to accept that this is a case of 'lies, damn lies and statistics'!

OliveTree75 · 25/07/2021 19:07

Great news!

Numbers right down in my area too which has been worst in country for weeks

Helpel · 25/07/2021 19:09

And yes I agree they are meaningless at all times not just when they are falling!! Who cares if it's 18 year olds who don't even know they've got it Hmm

OliveTree75 · 25/07/2021 19:09

I hope it will soon be time to bring back the phrase "falling off a cliff" when talking about cases rather than "rocketing"

ConfusedFox · 25/07/2021 19:10

It's not all it seems... the govt have changed how they measure the no of cases... they now don't measure reinfection

IHeartKingThistle · 25/07/2021 19:10

It is good news but it's clearly because of schools. But if they admit that then they'd have to admit they need to keep kids and teachers safe and they're just not interested in that.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 25/07/2021 19:10

My dc school closed on Thursday 22nd as did most schools in our area

SpringRainbow · 25/07/2021 19:11

It is good news, hopefully it’s the peak and not just a blip. I noticed a few scientists urging caution.

The next few weeks data will be very interesting. Hopefully we’ll see hospitalisations and deaths follow.

Looking at data from Scotland it looks possible.

It is good news. As I understand it though, people who are being infected for the second time doesn’t count in the daily stats so it would be interesting to see a chart including those figures and how that is rising.

TheVampiresWife · 25/07/2021 19:12

The schools here closed on Thursday/Friday. Numbers have been decreasing now for over a week.

Well if you had 100k positive tests you have at least 100k positives in the country.

If you only have 10k positive cases, you have at least 10k cases. But you could still have 100k as you don't know if everyone who suspects they have it have got themselves tested.

With holidays coming up plus summer events from the reopening the temptation to ignore symptoms or isolate but not bother testing is greater than ever.

I really hope cases are going down genuinely. But I noticed in Blackburn's numbers that testing is going down but the positive rate is increasing. I wonder if that is due to some people not bothering to get tested?

How many re-infection cases have there been?

This is recorded and is very low. 23,105 out of a total of ~4.3 million

Worth looking at numbers before thinking it’s a big factor.

Data thread has some info

They haven't changed it, they haven't counted more than one positive per person from the start (to avoid, say, someone who is regularly tested in hospital and tests positive every time coming up as ten cases). Arguably they should change it now since there's an increasing number of genuine reinfections but it isn't some recent sleight of hand.
