Very worried child temp

Hi, my ds10 has been fine all day. About 4pm he said he was cold (weird given the weather). At 5.30 said he feels sick, headache and has no energy at all. Not been out in the sun really all day.
Please could you let me know your kids Covid symptoms? I am worried about him, temperature going from 38.6-39 and back.
Thank you

You need to self isolate and get him a PCR swab. Could be Covid could be something better else. Paracetamol and plenty of fluids for him.

Adelphia1977 · 22/07/2021 19:47

Try not to worry. Keep calm. It could be a change in the weather type of cold. Usually children don't show symptoms. My little one just looked a bit pale. But this was January. Do you have any LFT tests at home? They sell them in Asda I think.

wonderstuff123 · 22/07/2021 19:48

My 12 year old started feeling really crappy last Tues evening, had a temp of 38.7 and feel asleep on the couch- never has a temp anymore and never fall asleep on the couch so I was convinced it was covid. But test came back negative. And he was back to normal the next day.

So it doesn't answer your question but hopefully will reassure you it might not be covid. You can give ibuprofen to bring the temp down

Adelphia1977 · 22/07/2021 19:49

But as above mentioned too. Better to know either way so a PCR is the right thing to do. Good luck

PlantDoctor · 22/07/2021 19:49

My DD (18 months) had s fever like that for about 24 h. Got her tested (negative) and kept her topped up on Calpol. She just picked up something that had been going round DH's work (not covid but similar symptoms to delta)

Workinghardeveryday · 22/07/2021 19:53

Thank you everyone! It’s so unlike him, he never stops and is laid on his bed and just repeats he feels sick and too tired to move his body!
He’s had calpol so hopefully will make a difference soon. Will do a test on him now

Heatherington · 22/07/2021 19:55

He’s got a classic covid symptom, he needs a PCR test.

SandysMam · 22/07/2021 19:55

The too tired to move his body definitely sounds like Covid.

AvaCallanach · 22/07/2021 19:56

Dd is 11 and her covid started like this. Absolutely fine all day, then fell asleep on the couch after school. High temperature soon after. She was only poorly for 48 hours really and then a bit floppy for a few days.

everythingthelighttouches · 22/07/2021 19:56

I can see why you might do a test now (which would be LFT at home), but you’re going to have to book him for a PCR anyway, so I wouldn’t bother putting him through it twice.

Hope he’s OK.

Boilinghot82 · 22/07/2021 20:04

2 weeks ago both my children had very high temps, going up to 40, coughs, sore throats. Both had pcrs and negative. My son ended up with chest infection. Our GP said there are lots of things going around apart from Covid and they are seeing lots if respiratory illnesses at the moment.

lannistunut · 22/07/2021 20:05

As above he needs test, rest, meds and fluids.

Read temperature info on NHS website and ring 111 if he goes above that or you feel worried.

Fingers crossed for a negative covid test.

Largethighsbadeyes · 22/07/2021 20:50

Although it's absolutely right to get a PCR test do remember that there are other things children can get which are as/more serious than covid.

Meningitis/sepsis etc

I'm not for a second suggesting that it's either of those but it's worth everyone bearing in mind that covid is not the only thing that can make children Ill. Look out for the same danger signals you would have prior to covid.

I hope it's just a 24 hour bug and your child is back to normal very soon

Workinghardeveryday · 22/07/2021 20:51

Thank you all, did LFT is negative, booked PCR for tomorrow.
His temperature came down to 36.8 after a tepid bath but went back up after half an hour to 37.7 but seems to be staying there.
He just says he is cold and feels sick poor boy! Bit more himself now though although just wants to lie in bed

My son presented exactly like this a few weeks ago. Did a pcr negative, thought he had a sickness bug then day 4 he had a sore throat but the next day tonsillitis diagnosed and anti biotics. It was a weird few days before his throat got bad.

Galaxyheart · 22/07/2021 21:16

Could it be sunstroke check NHS website the symptoms you describe are also for sunstroke

LaMariposa · 22/07/2021 21:17

A weird sore throat virus is going around. Temperature and feeling horrible, then changing to a nasty sore throat. DS had to suffer a PCR which was obviously negative, DD is just getting calpol. It’s been all round school and preschool here.

Workinghardeveryday · 22/07/2021 21:39

I thought possibly due to heat but he hasn’t been out much today and cool in here. He didn’t get up until after 10 this morning too

OP posts:
Provencerose · 22/07/2021 22:35

@Boilinghot82 we had the same here too- one ended up with the chest infection, the other with antibiotics for ears. It’s done the rounds here, all viral and ended up with antibiotics for either chest/ear or throat

Could be sunstroke OP? PCR to be on safe side though

neveradullmoment99 · 22/07/2021 23:02

I know he may not feel like it but an ice lolly is great to bring a temperature down. Not the greatest though if its accompanied by feeling sick!
lifehappened · 22/07/2021 23:42

Both my kids had this last week. They're 2 and 9 months so I didn't test them as I wouldn't put them through it but tested myself and husband every day and isolated.
Still won't know if it was but we both never got it and the kids literally had a temp and off food for 24 hours then totally fine after. I think there's something else going around

minipie · 22/07/2021 23:48

My DD had this a couple of weeks back. Tired (napped twice, unheard of for her) felt sick, high temperature.

Next day she was fine and PCR came back negative. Then the D&V started.

I think it was norovirus, apparently it’s going around.

SarahJinx · 22/07/2021 23:52

These were the exact symptoms of my son with Covid, exhausted, achy, headaches and sick for about five days. I hope he’s ok x

Choconuttolata · 22/07/2021 23:55

Mine all initially had sneezing.

Youngest developed a temp and croupy cough.

Dd2 lost taste, had a headache and fatigue.

Eldest (11) had loss of smell, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain and nausea.

Dd2 also had something more like noro two weeks ago with fever and one night of vomiting, but tested negative for Covid.

Saidtoomuch · 22/07/2021 23:56

I would be calling 111 for advice if the fever goes to or over 39.
I know you said he hadn't been out in the heat, but has he drank much water.
Early covid symptoms in one of mine was sore eyes and then the cough. Other child was dizziness, migraine, ashen looking then the cough.
On the extreme end still keep an eye out for signs of meningitis / sepsis, dehydration.
