Very worried child temp

Hi, my ds10 has been fine all day. About 4pm he said he was cold (weird given the weather). At 5.30 said he feels sick, headache and has no energy at all. Not been out in the sun really all day.
Please could you let me know your kids Covid symptoms? I am worried about him, temperature going from 38.6-39 and back.
Thank you

DCs symptoms were temperature and headache

Tonkerbea · 23/07/2021 18:29

Did they give him a Covid test? I hope you're all in the mend soon, so many bugs going round it feels like the depths of winter!

lannistunut · 23/07/2021 18:56

If he hasn't had a vivid test he needs one and if I were you I would do one too if possible

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/07/2021 19:20

Carbon monoxide poisoning wouldn’t cause a temp though.

The too tired to move could definitely be noro.

Spudina · 23/07/2021 19:25

I read an article from a Respiratory Consultant in which they said RSV rates in children are getting high as they are not getting immunity from mixing as much. Re temps, that’s the bodies way of fighting infection. When we lower it too much we add on some time for the infection to resolve. So during the day when I can watch them, I’m happy to leave a temp near 38 but will Calpol at 39 and above.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 23/07/2021 19:25

You say they don’t “think” it’s Covid.
I’m very surprised he wasn’t tested?

Do you have a temp alongside feeling unwell?

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 23/07/2021 19:29

Sorry I see you don’t have a temp.
I’d have a low threshold for having PCRs.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 19:49

Yes no temp for me, ds temp very up and down, at mo 36.8, then been quickly rising to 40-43!!
He is currently running around fine. This has happened all day since he came home. Very quickly rising within minutes to dangerous levels and feeling very poorly

Have you got another thermometer? Just to double check the readings are right. The ones that go in your ear can have very different readings just from changing the position slightly.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 21:39

Yes, dp went out and bought another digital thermometer, both showing the same. Currently 38.8 and rising. Given calpol, waiting to see if any difference, if not he can have ibuprofen then tepid bath. Paramedic called this afternoon to see how he was when passing, he said tepid baths good idea

Whathefisgoingon · 23/07/2021 21:48

There’s no way his temp was 43.5. Rest assured the hospitals thermometer was not calibrated correctly.

43 is brain damage or death, he wouldn’t have been able to talk to you and there’s zero chance they would have discharged him.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:05

@Whathefisgoingon yes it was, home, hospital and paramedic. That is why I have been totally freaking out

OP posts:
WrongWayApricot · 23/07/2021 22:07

The paramedic called you on the phone because they were passing by your house?

Darbs76 · 23/07/2021 22:11

My ds (17) had a temperature up to 39.2, mine was only mildly elevated. Agree you all need to isolate and get a PCR test ASAP.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:12

@Whathefisgoingon I am taking his temperature constantly. Goes as low as 37.7 then goes up again. He was discharged at that. Home for few hours and back up. He says he feels hot at 37.7, when it gets to 38.5 or higher he shakes and feels cold.

OP posts:
Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:14

Paramedic called to house as worried about him after this morning

OP posts:
Whathefisgoingon · 23/07/2021 22:15

@Workinghardeveryday sure, that all sounds very normal. Sounds a bit like covid.

The 43 is virtually impossible though, if like you say he was able to talk to you and walk around - much more likely the thermometers were playing funny buggers as they do. When I was in labour the BP machine read my BP at something outrageous like 180/150 when I was normally 113/69. Needless to say she did it manually and it was normal..

If you’re still worried I’d call 111 - that’s what they are there for. Did they do a covid test at hospital?

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:16

@ShowOfHands thanks for sharing that thread, but hospital and paramedic told me to carry on with tepid bath and also paracetamol and ibuprofen together so not sure what I should do other than that to bring temperature down?

OP posts:
Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:19

No Covid test in hospital which we couldn’t believe! We had already booked one last night for today which he had after being discharged.
Paramedic took his temperature then got me to take it with mine, it was right

OP posts:
Whathefisgoingon · 23/07/2021 22:19

@Workinghardeveryday I believe tepid baths etc are indeed recommended when fever is extremely high

To be honest if his fever hits over 40 one more time I’d be calling 999 and insisting on proper treatment and investigation.

Workinghardeveryday · 23/07/2021 22:23

@Whathefisgoingon thanks, we will. So frustrating because I can’t go to the hospital to shout for myself/him. But I will do my very best from home

OP posts:
Lotsalotsagiggles · 23/07/2021 22:23

Did hospital do bloods? If it doesn't settle I'd get hubby to take him
Back and push for them just to be safe and sure

Whathefisgoingon · 23/07/2021 22:24

@Workinghardeveryday it will pass, all will be fine. I know how awful it feels though. The joys of motherhood.

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 23/07/2021 22:35

@Workinghardeveryday

Hi all, thank you for all your lovely messages, means a lot. He is home!!! His temperature went up to 43.5, he felt very unwell in hospital and very upset (I FaceTimed). After a couple of hours it just came down to 37.7 which is great. Is the same now too and he is chatting and had a slice of toast. They have no idea what caused it but don’t think it’s Covid so that is good! Such a worry, so pleased he is home following me around again!
His temp went up to 43.5 and they sent him home? Wow that's shocking. He would of certainly been kept in in our trust.
