Mandatory vaccines for care workers is now law. Millions more workers will be affected.

The House of Lords passed the new law after just 90 minutes debate, with a regret motion noting there is insufficient evidence for it and that the severity of impact is unknown.

If you aren’t willing or able to get the vaccine then care work (which by its very nature can rarely be effective at non-infectious distance) probably isn’t for you at this time.

It’s not your right to risk the people you work with getting preventably ill.

Honestly parents pre 1950s would have sacrificed their first borns for the access to vaccines we have. We have only had a tasted of what they lived in fear of all the time.
Polio, small pox, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella etc etc could sweep through a town and send every infant to the grave yard

I can’t believe the government have to force this really!
I wish people could just do the right thing without it being mandated by this ridiculous shit show government.

Yes this.

Care homes have a duty of care to their vulnerable residents.

AfterSchoolWorry · 21/07/2021 00:57

Sensible.

alexdgr8 · 21/07/2021 01:02

well put Herrana.

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:04

Looks like I'm off to be a disability assessor then.

Oh well, working from home is quite appealing at this point.

MissCruellaDeVil · 21/07/2021 01:09

So they should, why should someone's elderly parents/grandparents get seriously ill because you wouldn't take a vaccine to prevent it! If you can't have it for medical reasons, should you really be working with people more susceptible to illnesses anyways?

Codswallop20 · 21/07/2021 01:20

As a nurse I have been expected to have hepatitis and flu jab, etc

Hepatitis was not optional. I did not leave or retrain. If you don't want a job, pop off.

Toesies · 21/07/2021 01:21

@MercyBooth You're aware that this has killed many elderly and vulnerable in care homes, and infected care workers, yes? As they live in group environments, they are particularly exposed to these types of dangers. Like any kind of medical environment, it is simply part of employment terms.

MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 01:23

Yes Because people infected with Covid were discharged into care homes without testing.

Exactly. You can’t even start the university course to train as a nurse/AHP without having the Hepatitis vaccination, amongst others.
MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 01:28

"probably isn’t for you at this time"

Funny how we wernt seeing this sort of statement between April 2020 and this summer. What a pity care workers didnt realise it in April 2020

The hepatitis vaccine has been in use since 1986.
So when I started my degree in 2007 I was confident regarding its safety profile.

Hepatitis is a risk posed to practitioners due to the nature of their public facing role.

Its not a valid comparison with the covid situation but don't let that stop you.

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:35

I wonder why hepatitis vaccines have never been mandated for those who work in social care?

Often they are not aware of the status of their residents but I suppose due to the low public perception of their worth/educational level/socioeconomic profile it wasn't ever worth protecting them.

Of course they should be mandated to have the covid vaccine to prevent onwards transmission of covid to double vaccinated residents though. That makes perfect sense.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/07/2021 01:38

Well care work is extremely poorly paid so I'd quit just for the principle. Already looked down on....now they're mandating what you do to your body. I bet if this was a male-dominated industry there would be a bit more debate about this

Toesies · 21/07/2021 01:39

@MercyBooth

Yes Because people infected with Covid were discharged into care homes without testing.

Are you going to continue to use a historical failure to criticise future concrete planning to protect the vulnerable?

MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 01:41

Well why do you want it brushed under the carpet.

OP posts:
ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:42

@HmmmmmmInteresting

I'm not poorly paid. I'm paid considerably more than my NHS equivalent.

But yes, time for a new role.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/07/2021 01:43

Surely these people will be allowed to turn down care work and claim UC if they're disqualified from working for care homes due to deciding not to get the vaccine

HmmmmmmInteresting · 21/07/2021 01:44

Are you saying care work is well paid?

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:44

Are you going to continue to use a historical failure to criticise future concrete planning to protect the vulnerable?

Well you see it was never the care workers who were culpable. It was our policy makers.

So let's deal with that perhaps before mandating a medical intervention for some of the most derided and disenfranchised members of our workforce.

I'm a nurse qualified manager within the care sector.

I think it needs to be recogthat there are qualified professionals within the sector who are willing to vote with their feet on this issue.
Something which the sector can ill afford to happen.
