Mandatory vaccines for care workers is now law. Millions more workers will be affected.

The House of Lords passed the new law after just 90 minutes debate, with a regret motion noting there is insufficient evidence for it and that the severity of impact is unknown.

If they mandated it in my job I would seriously re-think my career. And I've had two vaccines against covid19. But I appreciate I'm privileged to be able to think that

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:50

They believe the care sector to be low hanging fruit.

Its not by accident that they have begun this in social care rather than the NHS which is heavily unionised.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 21/07/2021 01:50

It's a tough one. I'm on the fence. I would prefer people who are in charge of others who have no real choice to be there e.g. care home/nursing home residents, patients, prisoners, school kids were double vaxed. I think it's unfair on the people in their care. However, I don't feel comfortable with forcing people to be vaxed that don't want to be. Maybe it's something that is considered at job application stage so if candidates a) and b) are equal bar vaccination, the vaccinated person gets the role as it is an additional benefit to the people they are caring for. That is also a form of indirect force I guess, but one that sits more comfortably with me though, as someone with a relative in a care home.

True

"Well you see it was never the care workers who were culpable. It was our policy makers.

So let's deal with that perhaps before mandating a medical intervention for some of the most derided and disenfranchised members of our workforce"

THIS!!!

I've never despised a government before. These guys send my blood pressure through the roof.

Funnily enough, a lot of the elderly people I speak to seem to feel the same (and they always start the conversation because I would always assume an elderly person likes this shit show of a government and would never criticise to them)

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 01:59

I take solace in the fact that this was never about vaccines/covid/deaths in any case.

The whole shitshow is just a convenient means to an end and the process necessarily must begin somewhere. Social care is simply the obvious choice.

This is all about setting precedents for mandation.

Hence my ideological opposition to accepting this vaccine. It simply won't stop here now they well and truly have the bit between their teeth.

Played a bloody blinder haven't they?

I was a Nurse in the Army,we had no choice about vaccinations. If care home staff don’t like it,they can get another job,the hysteria about the Covid Vaccine is ridiculous.

MercyBooth · 21/07/2021 02:09

@HmmmmmmInteresting You should hear what my 85 year old DM says about them. Turns the air blue.

I actually wish they would. I can think of a hundred easier jobs for the same or more money.

ForeverAlone1987 · 21/07/2021 02:22

I thought the vaccine was to prevent yourself getting seriously ill with covid? I dont think this vaccine stops you spreading it. So shouldnt it be down to the care workers as to whether they risk getting seriously ill? Someone correct me if i am wrong with my first sentence, just incase ive completely gotten it wrong lol

Topseyt · 21/07/2021 02:31

I'm glad they have done this. It needed to be done.

Adarajames · 21/07/2021 03:01

@ForeverAlone1987. It has been shown to reduce transmission considerably so it’s not just protecting the person who has the vaccine

Mary1Mary · 21/07/2021 03:11

Does anyone actually believe the government gives a shit about old people? This is the start of something far more sinister. Other countries have insisted on the vax to enter supermarkets or receive hospital treatment.

There's a lot going on within health care that most people haven't noticed.

KalvinPhillipsManBun · 21/07/2021 03:11

Wow all of you saying they were right too make it compulsory, they are breaking the law, the vaccine is useless, does not stop the spread and protects only you, it's scary how evil and sinister this government are.

Ylvamoon · 21/07/2021 03:43

... on the upside, with care staff leaving their profession by the 10,000's the wages will go up.

bluetongue · 21/07/2021 03:44

@ZednotZee

The hepatitis vaccine has been in use since 1986. So when I started my degree in 2007 I was confident regarding its safety profile.

Hepatitis is a risk posed to practitioners due to the nature of their public facing role.

Its not a valid comparison with the covid situation but don't let that stop you.

This isn’t to protect you, it’s to protect the residents. Even if double jabbed they may not be fully protected as a young, healthy person would be. How selfish of you.
ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 03:57

How selfish of you.

In terms of my right to retain my individual bodily autonomy under any and all circumstances thats not quite the insult you think it is.

Its not to protect me, you're right. I am expected to risk my health in order to provide and extra layer of protection to those who have already been vaccinated, should they choose to be.

Simply because I am a nurse the health of my patients does not and never will supercede mine in my list of priorities.

Its just not happening.

Newmama29 · 21/07/2021 04:01

I don’t really understand the statement that you should be vaccinated to protect the vulnerable in care homes, surely if they’ve been vaccinated then it doesn’t matter if the care worker has been vaccinated seeing as you can still transmit covid with the vaccine? I understand there are some people that can’t be vaccinated but the vast majority of care home residents will have been vaccinated or offered

ZednotZee · 21/07/2021 04:02

This isn't about vaccination or preserving health.

Its about setting precedents.

HelgaDownUnder · 21/07/2021 04:17

I agree it's scary.

In Australia it's been compulsory for care workers for a while. Now they're picking the eyes out of the remaining healthcare sector, making it hard for nurses by restricting where they can work if unvaxxed. They want 70% of the population vaxxed before they will end the lockdowns, so I assume other sectors (remaining healthcare, police, teachers, public servants, anyone on benefits) will follow.

Seastheday03 · 21/07/2021 04:30

Why have they made it madadatory for care home workers but not NHS workers??

YellowMonday · 21/07/2021 04:35

It's excellent news.

I hope the mandate increases further across all workplaces. With exceptions for those who medically cannot take the vaccine.

I'm in my thirties, and everyone I know (family, friends and colleagues) feels exactly the same way as me.
