If you've been out today what has been the general consensus?

Been shopping this afternoon and was so nice albeit really strange to not wear my mask! I hesitated going in at first because it felt like I'd forgotten something!

If you've been out today, what did you find was the general consensus of people around you either wearing or not wearing masks?

I actually didn't see anyone in a mask which surprised me as I thought quite a lot would still wear them!

Everyone still wearing them here. Tesco have a sign up saying something about they'd prefer them to be worn, or words to that effect.

Direstraitsmates · 20/07/2021 00:10

Don't see anybody without a mask today apart from outside.

OuiOuiKitty · 20/07/2021 00:11

@Moonface123

A lot of smugness on here as usual. Non masked people are not selfish, why are the fearful hysterical brainwashed ones, ones pointing the finger to the ones who have actually got the courage to get on with their lives ? When is enough enough ?
Eh I think the people wearing masks are getting on with their lives too? They are just doing it wearing a mask. Most aren't fearful or hysterical either, they are just being courteous.

It's quite sweet that you think you are courageous for not wearing one though!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/07/2021 00:13

Really relieved to see that most people are just carrying on with mask wearing, sanitising and social distancing. As they should be 🤷🏻‍♀️

Chimboo · 20/07/2021 00:28

Went to a pub, and not a single person was wearing a mask - including the staff. People just gave each other space, including when walking up to the bar. 1 in 1 out in the loo, and everyone used the hand sanitiser when they walked in. It wasn’t crowded, it wasn’t judgemental, it was glorious.

Huddle · 20/07/2021 00:44

Most people here had masks and were distancing. Didn't really feel like much had changed

HmmmmmmInteresting · 20/07/2021 00:56

1 in 1 out in the loo
As opposed to what?!Confused

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 20/07/2021 00:58

@l2b2

Been to Sainsbury's and 90% were masked, including myself. No surprise re B & M though upthread from the somewhat aggressive poster upthread. IME B & M customers round here have never bothered with government guidelines; likewise the staff.
I noticed this too. I went to Waitrose about 5pm and it was the busiest I've seen it in a long long time. I only saw 2 people not wearing masks - so let's say about 98% wearing masks. Everyone else including myself wore them. I then went to B&M where the clientele was visibly 'lower class' (I feel I will get ripped apart for saying that but it's true - what can I say? 🤷🏼‍♀️) and I'd say only 70% were wearing masks.

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

The right talk about the deserving/non deserving poor and the left talk about the deserving/ non deserving NHS patient. Quite a disturbing parallel

You see though. Im used to it. Being a social housing tenant ive had loads of comments from the right about my "free" flat.

But from the left we get comments about the "free" NHS and the deserving/non deserving NHS patient.

So social housing and the NHS have both morphed into being a stick to beat people with. One coming from the right and one coming from the left.
A huge lesson ive learnt from this pandemic is that the right and left arent as different from each other as they claim.

I live abroad and mandatory masking was dropped about two weeks ago. I’ve noticed less and less people wearing them as the days go by.

Plenty of social distancing and hand sanitizer still going on.

It’s lovely to be in the supermarket without fogged up specs tbh

greenlynx · 20/07/2021 01:15

Local shop - 8 out of 10 were wearing masks.
Petrol station shop - staff in masks, visitors mostly in masks.
English heritage attraction (outside type) staff was wearing masks and visitors were putting masks on for toilet and gift shop.
Walk along the high street + ice cream kiosk - staff and even some people outside were wearing masks.

@WeirdArchitecture

And yes, I do think it is a class thing, even if there are some outliers. I think you have to spend time in a certain place to see that at ground level. Im not used to it and it feels like armageddon. But then I have lived a pampered life in comparison.... It's a topic nobody wants to bring up or discuss, I think. I do believe, after staying here, that low education and a certain 'tribe mentality' is at the bottom of constantly high case rates in the NW.

Many are passed out in the town, pissed out of their minds. I have also witnessed several people being harassed for still wearing masks, locally.

Not a class thing in my experience. I live in a not exactly nice town and most people were still wearing masks that I saw. I think it's more of a generation thing, younger people were mainly the ones not wearing masks.

I'm assuming this is where there are small toilet facilities with two or three cubicles and not much space outside where they ask for only one person to use the facilities at a time

Nothing smug about realising there is still a major problem and doing something to help yourself and others . I'm not fearful hysterical or brainwashed thank you, just sensible.
VashtaNerada · 20/07/2021 06:01

Commuted to work as usual. Not much of a difference tbh. The workmen in high vis tended not wear masks but they rarely do anyway. Everyone else just getting on with it. It was 30 degree heat here in London and people had no problem wearing masks on the tube generally. There’s a stereotype about Londoners being selfish but I haven’t particularly seen that Smile

User018475022 · 20/07/2021 06:33

If I was to put a number to it I would probably say 1 in 10 hadn't got a mask on.

fanofsun · 20/07/2021 06:59

Surprised at how much of the older and larger community not wearing masks. Argos, Tesco and Sainsburys yesterday. Although people still observing social distancing on pavements.

Whatever9999 · 20/07/2021 07:03

I braved town yesterday for only the 3rd time since March last year. I'm one of those selfish cunts that have autism and can't wear one, even more selfishly I can't cope with other people wearing them.
I would say 80-90% of people were wearing masks (just enough so I didn't feel I was the only one and being judged in quote the same way).
Unlike the last 2 times I actually managed to remember and get what I needed (actually have some clothes for the summer now). I wore/carried my lanyard on the bus there and back but took it off in town.
For me the hardest part was going against the one way arrows that are still.om the floor in the precinct, that had been something that stressed me right out previously, people not following the rules. I was actually on the phone to my partner, telling him how I was going the wrong way.

NotQuiteUsual · 20/07/2021 07:09

I came to a holiday park yesterday and as expected not a mask in sight. I kept one on me incase I was served by a staff member who was wearing one. But even the staff seemed relieved to not need them anymore. Seeing the kids having a totally normal disco and party games on the dance floor made me a bit emotional!

5lilducks · 20/07/2021 07:14

Went to MNS, Next and local pharmacy yesterday, all were wearing masks and Social Distancing.

lollipoprainbow · 20/07/2021 07:23

That nothing has changed !! I work in a hospital setting and still have to wear a mask and I went shopping after work and everyone was still wearing masks !

PoorPawsPickPawpaws · 20/07/2021 07:26

The only person I noticed not wearing a mask was the lorry driver at the petrol station - who yelled "you don't have to wear a muzzle anymore love" to me in the most aggressive way.

He was blessed with one of my most witty and clever retorts: "go f* yourself" 😁

I think everyone else was in masks. But I live in a village so it's not the largest sample size!

Geminijust · 20/07/2021 07:34

No real change here. Lots of local businesses (included the one I work for) have put out communications to say they will be keeping safety measures in place, despite "freedom day". Response from public has been very positive.

Lottie4 · 20/07/2021 07:39

Much to my relief there were only a few not wearing them in Tescos, some of whom will obviously be ECV. DD said everyone had one on the bus. Lady who takes my exercise class, sent an email saying she's continuing with socially distanced classes and confirmed this will be in place in September as well. Where DH works, they've had 5/8 in every day, that's not changing. I still have to wear a mask at work. So nothing significant for us.

Fortyfifty · 20/07/2021 07:40

Supermarket trip at a quiet time with DH. 95% of people wearing masks. Not so many staff. I guess it's a boiling hot day it must have been a relief not to have had to wear one.

DD 18 works at a popular fast food place and staff still wearing masks but only half the customers and none of the deliveroo, uberxeatsxetc... pick up people, who tend to be aggressive and arsey and get in staff faces. I'm annoyed DD hasn't been allowed her 2nd jab before 8 weeks.
