If you've been out today what has been the general consensus?

Been shopping this afternoon and was so nice albeit really strange to not wear my mask! I hesitated going in at first because it felt like I'd forgotten something!

If you've been out today, what did you find was the general consensus of people around you either wearing or not wearing masks?

I actually didn't see anyone in a mask which surprised me as I thought quite a lot would still wear them!

No masks on beach, beach shop is only a takeaway hatch with a nice socially distanced queue.

PuzzledObserver · 19/07/2021 22:20

@puppeteer the difference is that not going out, not mixing with people etc, are deleterious to people’s well-being, not going to cafes etc is bad for the economy (i.e. people’s livelihoods). Whereas wearing a mask is, for the vast majority of people, a minor irritation.

Social isolation and avoiding people are damaging in a way which wearing masks isn’t. Don’t get me wrong - I don’t enjoy them at all, especially in this weather when I get all hot and sweaty and it’s a relief to take them off. But I think it’s a minor inconvenience which is worth it for the greater good.

I stand by my view. You are of course entitled to yours.

TheABC · 19/07/2021 22:21

Sane here; everyone had a mask on in the supermarket. I was mildly surprised, I had expected more people to whip them off in this heat!

I am doing it as a "better safe than sorry" approach in crowded indoor spaces.

cathcath2 · 19/07/2021 22:27

NW and most people wearing masks. Our case rate is over 500 and climbing. Hospital admissions locally have more than doubled. A lot of schools have multiple bubbles isolating. Some schools have switched to online learning for the last few days.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 19/07/2021 22:30

Central London - masks worn as always inside shops and public transportation generally. Surprisingly the ubiquitous colourful flowery lanyards brigade are conspicuous by their absence because in recent weeks seemingly most were suddenly proudly momentarily and temporarily conveniently disabled giving the super spreading more super charged opportunities to test the efficacy of vaccination and robustness of (still “free”) NHS. Covidiots less than Covid mutual duty of care considerate today. Not sure what tomorrow will bring as the great unmasking will eventually materialise despite Covid data moving rapidly in the wrong direction. Sky news earlier today reporting USA residents to avoid visiting UK not appreciating the UK apart from England are following science and data and not dates. LA USA also back to masking because of Indian Delta as widely reported. Possibly outdoor single masking too. Stay safe all and keep mitigating the risks to shorten the pandemic and inconvenience but more to obviously limit more excess lost lives and livelihoods.

BlackKnightinYellowWellies · 19/07/2021 22:32

My take is that masks and restrictions perpetuate the idea that our actions or inactions as individuals can control covid 19.
It's not accurate, it's not fair to tell people just living normal lives that they are endangering others by hugging their friends and family or going to the shop or having lunch.
Just think about it properly for a couple of minutes, weigh up the harm it is doing to millions.

marieantoinehairnet · 19/07/2021 22:34

Went to two places tonight and one today.

School - I already have one child isolating, entire year group out, I was one of 4 parents at drop off wearing a mask.

Sainsburys - about half the people were wearing masks.

Gym - one of those gyms with a bar etc, not a single soul wearing masks in any of them common areas, obviously I wouldn't expect people to wear whilst working out but only yesterday most people were wearing them. Shocked me actually.

I am still wearing mine as only a complete fool can see it's rampant right now!

Fuck me could you be any more patronising…actually you probably could 😀

Wore a mask on the bus and Overground in London (zone 1 & 2, off peak). 90%+ were in masks. DD's preschool dance lesson - same as usual, parents wear masks until inside studio, then off during lesson. DD's music class (parent and child) - new change as masks were compulsory before today. I wore mine from reception into the class but both parents in there had taken theirs off so I took mine off as well, then the next three parents all walked in wearing masks and wore them for five minutes, by the end everyone was maskless.

Went to the playground with dd (all outdoors), no one ever wears masks there now. About 15% of people on the streets are wearing them (not a shopping street so not going between shops).

Saw an anti-masker/vaxxer on a bicycle yelling at a passer-by in a mask, asking him why he was wearing a mask on the street (uncrowded residential road). But no other issues elsewhere, people are just getting on with their own business.

WeirdArchitecture · 19/07/2021 22:41

having to spend summer in a north west shithole due to a death in the family.
As of today, I would say only 5% of the entire town centre wore a mask. Fucking leathery, hard bastards with a general view of covid being a hoax.

Wont be coming back after I leave!

nameychange · 19/07/2021 22:44

Weve been to the local shops, everyone wearing masks and many shops still limiting numbers in. We then nipped to IKEA and then a shopping centre. IKEA pretty much everyone was in masks and in the shopping centre it was a mixture.

WeirdArchitecture · 19/07/2021 22:46

And yes, I do think it is a class thing, even if there are some outliers. I think you have to spend time in a certain place to see that at ground level. Im not used to it and it feels like armageddon. But then I have lived a pampered life in comparison....
It's a topic nobody wants to bring up or discuss, I think. I do believe, after staying here, that low education and a certain 'tribe mentality' is at the bottom of constantly high case rates in the NW.

Many are passed out in the town, pissed out of their minds. I have also witnessed several people being harassed for still wearing masks, locally.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 19/07/2021 22:46

@ BlackKnightinYellowWellies

It’s all helpful easy to do personal risk mitigation to protect yourself and your family bubble and yes all those people you bump into for a few minutes in close proximity in enclosed spaces with no ventilation and importantly with unknown Covid status.

I do not believe there is a global conspiracy to mask voices and peoples freedom. By doing simple easy to do steps we are collectively making a little difference. That difference in some cases can be life or death especially when further mixing will ultimately beat the vaccination race. I prefer freedom to keep society and businesses open but with sensible mutually beneficial personal and collective risk mitigation measures. Masking up for a few minutes when necessary is no big deal but has been a game changer along with vaccination to help reduce the untested asymptomatic silent super spreading. My young child is sensibly masked up too (temporarily when sensible to do so) to set an example letting grown ups know that little children want to be a part of the solution than forever the cause and prolonging the real pain and suffering of contracting and super spreading to damage more lives and livelihoods.

worktrip · 19/07/2021 23:02

Lots of mask wearing and some SD, but not in big busy supermarket

Interesting then that the outbreak that sparked Manchester's return to tier 3 last year was in one of the most affluent parts of Greater Manchester. I shop in a large supermarket that has a really varied client demographic, bordering areas which probably covers the whole spectrum of 'classes' and the majority of people are still wearing masks.
FlyingBattie · 19/07/2021 23:05

I live in one of the most deprived areas in the UK. Local school has a GCSE pass rate of 50% for 5 9-4 grades. So we're really quite thick here.
Still 90% of people had masks on in Tesco today. And we have one of the highest vaccine rates in the county. Maybe we're too thick to do our own "research" etc.

NotMyCat · 19/07/2021 23:05

Lidl today, NW
Would say probably 90% wearing masks. Staff weren't

FlyingBattie · 19/07/2021 23:06

30% that should be for GCSE- not 50%! We wish it was 50!

Lemonmelonsun · 19/07/2021 23:07

My consensus is this is Maddness, one super spreader is all it takes, its the young, clubber who are most likely to pose the risks and yet not wear mask.
I felt very unsafe and think ill have to wear a visor and mask shopping again and avoid crowded times etc.

GingerbreadZinc · 19/07/2021 23:25

Went into the local town and I'd say about 70-80% of people were wearing masks. I think we will see a drop off in mask wearing in the next few weeks.

Moonface123 · 19/07/2021 23:45

A lot of smugness on here as usual.
Non masked people are not selfish, why are the fearful hysterical brainwashed ones, ones pointing the finger to the ones who have actually got the courage to get on with their lives ?
When is enough enough ?

Which town was it?

I'm pro-mask, but wouldn't wear a mask today if I was a gym-goer. What's the point? In the actual gym with the heavy breathing etc is the risky part, not walking between rooms.

Long time since I did a school drop-off, but if drop offs are outside I wouldn't wear a mask either

treedragon · 20/07/2021 00:05

I wonder how many people say they are ditching masks because they don’t like them have kids they say to:

“We sometimes do things we don’t like”.
