FREEDOM!!!!!!

OP posts:
nordica · 19/07/2021 09:32

Fortunately most people on the train were wearing one this morning, pretty much as many as last week ~ 90% at least and it was a quiet time anyway.

Mummiepig · 19/07/2021 09:35

As a shop worker this thread makes me so sad, I'm dreading my shift later, I will be wearing my mask for a 9 hour shift, I will be very thankful to the customers who wear their mask for their 5 or 10 minute visit to the shop

PinkSpring · 19/07/2021 09:37

Nope, I am not wearing one anymore

Mrsfussypants1 · 19/07/2021 09:38

DH and I aren't wearing our masks today. We are both in isolation with covid, both double jabbed, dh on day 5 and not very well at all. I'm just starting out with symptoms. When we finally get out we will be wearing our masks again. Currently in the UK hotspot and it seems only right to protect others. I've witnessed how I'll you can get even if your double vaccinated and I wouldn't wish ot upon anyone.

weegiepower · 19/07/2021 09:39

Every single person in Sainsbury's and local shopping center was wearing a mask this morning which I was quite surprised about! I thought there'd at least be some people not. I'll continue to wear mine to make other people and stop workers feel comfortable

weegiepower · 19/07/2021 09:40

SHOP* workers..!

oneglassandpuzzled · 19/07/2021 09:41

I can't see any good reason not to wear a mask in the places I wore them yesterday.

MummyPop00 · 19/07/2021 09:42

No wont be wearing one when I go out shortly. Had enough of my glasses steaming up/slipping off to accommodate a mask with dubious properties.

Time to get on with it & see if the vax really works in keeping the vast majority of people out of hospital imo

Gertie75 · 19/07/2021 09:43

I've just got back from Morrisons, by far the majority had masks on, I didn't and I saw 5 others without.
There were 3 people wearing masks under their chin and they were all staff.

Topseyt · 19/07/2021 09:43

I'll carry mine in my bag. I don't want to wear it.

I'll be working out which shops are enforcing or not as I go along. It looks like many are encouraging but not enforcing.

I hate masks. I have slightly reduced lung capacity from several infections years ago so I probably could have claimed exemption but didn't. I wore my masks much of the time when required but often had to find a spot where I could just drop it down for a while to try and breathe freely.

I will try to avoid shopping in places that enforce mask wearing because it is so uncomfortable. I've never been a nightclub fan anyway and I don't like going to large social gatherings either so not an issue for me personally although I do wish all of those owners the very best of luck as they try to open up their businesses again.

I'm glad they are not mandatory anymore, but I'm not holding my breath that it stays that way. I'm not chucking my masks out yet, but will try hard to shop only in places that are not enforcing.

MrsFlinch · 19/07/2021 09:44

I’ve just been down to my local Tesco express. Not one person was in there without a mask (apart from exempt)Distances were also kept.

Dh and dds workplace have requested they stay and lots of people I know are going to continue to wear them even though they are double vaxxed. It seems people her are in no hurry to give them up yet.

I initially said I wouldn’t be wearing a mask as from today as I knew I’d be double vaxxed in time, but we all know that doesn’t stop you from catching COVID so will proceed with caution and use my mask when needed.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 19/07/2021 09:45

Katie Hopkins, and look what happened to her!

SippingWhiskeyOutTheBottle · 19/07/2021 09:46

So many people can’t wait to post on this thread to say they’ll not be wearing a mask. Why aren’t you out and about then having fun, instead of posting on mumsnet? The weather is beautiful, your ‘freedom day’ is here, you’re so thrilled.... but you’re posting on mumsnet... My guess is a lot of these people don’t go out often, don’t have places to go and get their kicks from winding others up who are genuinely concerned.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/07/2021 09:47

I've just been to Aldi, they are asking you to continue to wear masks as is Tescos. Everyone is doing so.

SippingWhiskeyOutTheBottle · 19/07/2021 09:48

I went out early to walk the dogs this morning before it gets too hot for them, passed our local shop and could see staff and customers inside wearing masks. 👍

TheWindOnTheMoon · 19/07/2021 09:49

As far as I'm concerned, nothing's changed except the date. The government has declared freedom day but covid is still here, the numbers are rising, as are hospital admissions.

If you have ditched your mask and are not doing social distancing, are you aware of the rising cases, and do you look at your local area's figures? And are you still being considerate of others who may be clinically vulnerable, or don't you care about us?

So if you don't wear a mask you have to have a buzzing social life 24/7? What a daft thing to say. OP asked who is and isn't wearing a mask and people are responding. You say people can't wait to post on this thread to say they won't be wearing one, well the same goes for the people who can't wait to post that they will be wearing one.

A friend of mine works in the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham.

Yes, they are absolutely overwhelmed with Covid cases, and they have had to cancel crucial surgeries because they are so overwhelmed with Covid cases.

Many hospitals around the country are so overwhelmed with Covid cases it's impacting their ability to treat other patients.

This has been all over the press and on social media with many accounts verified as belonging to NHS staff working in that hospital tweeting about it.

The Covid-deniers attacking posters who are accurately reporting the facts should be utterly ashamed of themselves for lying and spreading conspiracy theories.

livingwitheds1984 · 19/07/2021 09:51

You should also read this post from Doctor Catherine Sampson, a consultant in Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Adult ECMO in Leicester:

"48553 cases today. 100 more patients in ICU with Covid19 than 5days ago. No one talking about covid length of stay so I will.
Median ICU stay:-
Heart/major cancer surgery 1-2d
Covid (not ventilated) 5d
Covid (ventilated) 20d
Covid (kidney support) 32d

When ICU is full, one patient with severe covid19 requiring invasive ventilation (which up till now has been about 60% of the 37500 people admitted to England, Wales & NI) cancels 10-20 heart/major cancer surgeries. We need to clearly communicate this.

And just in case people claim this is “fear mongering” here is the actual data from the fantastic folk @ICNARC

AbsolutelyPatsy · 19/07/2021 09:53

my local hospital hospital had roughly 12 covid cases last week but they have Made space over the year to accommodate covid.

Whiskycav · 19/07/2021 09:53

Can I ask (and I am genuine) people who won't wear a mask on public transport, supermarkets etc but will happily wear one in hospital. Why are you ok wearing it in hospital but not anywhere else?

Is guidelines or something else.

I am not judging, I think people are doing what they think is the right thing. I am just interested.

southeastdweller · 19/07/2021 09:59

@MyGardenSanctuary

In the most recent bad winter - 2017-18 - there were 300 to 400 flu deaths a day at the peak, more than is being predicted for this summer's Covid peak.

Did all the virtue signallers wear masks then to stop flu spreading? Nope. No-one gave a shiny shit.

Such a good point there.
livingwitheds1984 · 19/07/2021 10:01

By that standard if someone murders a person, or steals from a shop, I should go out and murder someone, or steal from a shop.

The lesson we all need to learn from the pandemic is that wearing masks when ill is a good thing and something we should all adopt permanently going forward, like they have done for many years in some Asian countries.

Mooloolabababy · 19/07/2021 10:02

Ah but if I get rid of my mask, then I won't be able to inconspicuously swear at people, yawn without covering my mouth or go shopping without make up on......I don't feel ready to give us on these benefits yet so I'll keep it for as long as I can!

The key words being "when ill" which most people aren't.

Personally, I would rather just stay in when I'm I'll which frankly I always have done anyway.
