whistlers · 19/07/2021 15:42

I'll wear mine in medical settings mainly for the comfort of other patients.

Backofbeyond50 · 19/07/2021 15:45

I don't think pregnant women as a group are. Certainly all were wearing masks in clinic. Some may be if unable to wear them..

TerritorialPissings · 19/07/2021 15:47

@Indigopearl

I think people get annoyed becuase it is a choice which affects others. A bit like lighting up a cigarette next to someone who can't escape from the smoke.
Jesus Christ…you are comparing a likely symptomless human being simply breathing without a mask on to someone choosing to smoke a cigarette full of toxins? The type of masks that the vast vast majority of the public wear are such poor quality that their breath is most definitely seeping out of the sides.

I find it so depressing how we are dehumanising basic human functions and making out breathing or talking as some sort of unsavoury act.

Indigopearl · 19/07/2021 15:48

@MostlyMaple That's ok I realise people have a multitude of reasons for making that choice and shouldn't have to explain them. If you are able to though maybe you could also consider wearing one if you go to other settings that have more elderly and other vulnerable people around. Many vulnerable people are reliant on using their local shops for example and would appreciate their needs considered too.

TheVampiresWife · 19/07/2021 15:49

@whistlers

Are pregnant women exempt?
You can't be exempt from a law which doesn't exist.

If you are unable to wear a mask for whatever reason, you don't need to wear one - it was ever thus. But now the mask mandate has been removed, so have exemptions.

Unfortunately this means that businesses are making up their own rules - I hope none fall foul of discrimination laws in doing so.

Downton57 · 19/07/2021 15:50

I'll keep wearing mine because it's mandatory in Scotland and because I think that's the sensible approach while case numbers are so high. It seems barking mad to abandon precautions and let case numbers soar, making it more likely a new variant will emerge, and that many more thousands of people will have their lives impacted by Long Covid. For the vast majority of people wearing a mask is a tiny sacrifice, surely?

It is an unsavoury act, if you’re in a COVID hotspot.

phoenixrosehere · 19/07/2021 15:52

I feel as though mask wearers are looking down upon those of us who are choosing not to wear them anymore?

I’m not bothered whether people wear a mask or not. Definitely, not looking down on those who can’t or won’t. What annoys me are the people who regardless whether they wear mask or not refuse to sd when they absolutely have the room to do so.

memberofthewedding · 19/07/2021 15:52

Im not wearing a mask - but then its so hot Im not wearing anything while working (alone) at my computer.

Nengineer · 19/07/2021 15:54

@ItsVousNotMoi

I guess I'm being a bit stupid not to wear one in certain places. It's just been so hot and unbearable
Being on a ventilator if you can find one is a picnic in comparison. My husband was in a UK HDU a few years ago until we could fly the hell out of the UK to a proper hospital and there was no air conditioning and a hole in the floor of the warn which nurses kept falling into and hurting themselves and trolleys kept getting stuck in. It was a bank holiday weekend so no maintenance. I did manage to scrub the blood off his bed frame and laundered his bedding so it was not dirty as he was the third patient in that bed. But crack on
Shieldingending · 19/07/2021 15:55

I went shopping today and wore one as I will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Not for me, but to protect the vulnerable who may not have gained antibodies from their vaccinations

TerritorialPissings · 19/07/2021 15:55

@LimeRedBanana do you really believe that??

This is the best yet. I bet certain other posters are absolutely kicking themselves that they didn't think of it first!

Remember all: Talking and breathing kills grannies Grin

Backofbeyond50 · 19/07/2021 15:57

Should have said were. Academic now.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/07/2021 15:58

I'm wearing mine.
If the mask was to protect me I might feel I had more of a choice, but it's not-it's to protect others.

Of course!

But we’re COVID-free here, so it’s not something we have to worry about.

But of course breathing in close quarters to someone mask-free in a COVID hot spot like the UK is an ‘unsavoury act’. How can it be perceived as anything else?

Covid particles are far smaller than the holes in masks. How can masks be protecting anyone?
whistlers · 19/07/2021 16:00

@LimeRedBanana where are you?

I would be careful about your pride over being covid-free. Situations can change quickly

Which is why masks are still mandated on public transport here - even though there hasn’t been any COVID in the community since early 2020.

theDudesmummy · 19/07/2021 16:10

I am in Ireland and about to travel on a plane this week. Wearing FPP2 around and about and FPP3 in the airport and on the plane.

Oh quite right dear. You should go private dear. No mixing with riff raff or bodily fluids splattered over the cushions.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/07/2021 16:32

@whistlers thanks but I'll trust the advice coming from the people that have dedicated their lives to studying science.

I feel that whole new heights (or depths) have been reached today... As epitomised above.

"unsavoury act"... Breathing and talking are now on a par with not washing your hands after the loo?

colourchanginglipstick · 19/07/2021 16:54

They are still mandatory in Scotland. I won't be wearing one though - simply won't be going anywhere they are needed. Thank goodness for online shopping!
