Anyone want to predict when the next lockdown will be?

I am guessing last week of August/beginning of September, and schools won't be going back when they are due to!

Well we should be in one now.

But I'm expecting it to begin as soon as Parliament's holiday is over.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 18/07/2021 21:55

@CovidKingfisher

People will just have to get over... loved ones dropping like flies?...

Yeah you can't move where I am for all the bodies piled high Hmm

Yeah, I clearly meant all in one area.
DottyHarmer · 18/07/2021 21:58

This is very depressing. So it is likely that there is no way out. Then why are some posters keen on lockdowns, bleating on about New Zealand and how the UK’s done it wrong etc etc?

If the whole world is going to be affected by wave after wave of covid variants of whatever severities, then surely it is pointless doing anything. I feel so sad for my dcs. As pp said, it will be a life of never going out, meeting anyone r even having a job. School and university online. All right for some, of course, but a miserable torture for millions.

MarshaBradyo · 18/07/2021 21:59

@Wellbythebloodyhell

We can and probably will develop better treatments and better vaccines.

Yeah? When?
And in the meantime we ruin the economy with restrictions leading more lives into poverty and kill them that way instead, as long as it not a covid death though hey

Yeh agree they’ll come but we can’t wait around for them
Egghead68 · 18/07/2021 22:01

I’m not suggesting we should

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 18/07/2021 22:02

The bodies will pile high again if we don't put the brakes on this. The vaccinations are working, but when we have 150k cases a day, a lot of people will die. Who gives a shit though. As long as people can go down the pub and have Sunday roast with the whole family, it really doesn't matter, does it.

They may or may not. It’s too early to tell. According to Neil Ferguson there’s a strong chance we will get to 100K cases and 1-2K hospitalisations a day, but it’s currently unclear whether it will continue to get worse at point or will recede due to (albeit temporary) hers immunity.

Herd

Wellbythebloodyhell · 18/07/2021 22:10

@JesusIsAnyNameFree it's not about going out for Sunday lunch at the pub though is it, its about living not existing and also realising that many peoples livelihoods depend on others going out for a Sunday lunch and other such things we do for pleasure

bellamountain · 18/07/2021 22:10

I really don't know how on earth they'll get the public to comply again with another lockdown? It just won't happen. People will think well, nothing makes any difference (vaccines, lockdowns and restrictions) when we end up in the same place again and again.

i think fear - when deaths get very high - will play a factor.

Isn’t it said you be around 200 a day?

I don’t think that will bring about fear we’ve had much higher

@TableFlowerss

Selfish.

Twintwix · 18/07/2021 22:33

If they meet the vaccination target of everyone vaccinated by what, end of September or something like that, what is the point of another lockdown after that? Everyone vaccinated (who wants to be) so what is the purpose of locking down and what is the end goal? It's becoming totally mad and amazing how many people now beg for lockdowns!

There happens to be a lot of support for restrictions:

You’re in the selfish camp!!

Thankfully though, I believe all restrictions will be lifted and we’ll be back to normal in about 1.5 hours!

Can’t wait Grin

Quartz2208 · 18/07/2021 22:42

What would we be trying to achieve by a lockdown.

The first time we pretty much stopped everything it was to start learning about it and seeing if we could get a vaccine alongside protecting the NHS

The second time (October-November) was to buy more time for the vaccines that were being trialled.

The third time (Jan) was to get the vaccines out.

Lockdown work by suppressing down cases - they work alongside objectives such as above. So what would a lockdown achieve. Because looking at Australia it is clear that the lockdown necessary to keep Delta at bay is brutal and one we have neither the appetite, will nor money for anymore. Plus would it actually eradicate it or given the numbers we have would it simply come back. Because lockdowns have suppressed not eradicated and are designed to kick the can down the road in order for something to be done.

So what would that be? Because I am not sure there is anything which is why we are opening up - because there is no objective in the future we need time buying for.

That isnt to say RESTRICTIONS are going to come back. Masks made mandatory, rules and limits put in for events, nightclubs etc because I think they will.

TheKeatingFive · 18/07/2021 22:43

Same as before
Threat of fines

They can’t police what people do in their own homes in any meaningful way. Thankfully.

Expect to see a lot of businesses going underground also. That was already happening last lockdown where I am.

Quartz2208 · 18/07/2021 22:47

@NannyAndJohn that poll is insane though and actually shows the damage the fear attached to Covid has done or a real issue in how the interview was conducted.

Because how on earth can 19% (so roughly 190 people) think we should have a PERMANENT curfew against leaving the house after 10pm without a good reason

And 35% permanent quarantine from foreign travel even without COVID.

I am not sure what that shows but it doesnt sound remotely sensible

MarshaBradyo · 18/07/2021 22:48

Polls seem to throw up contrast to what you see irl with demand springing up each time we get relaxation.

GreenLakes · 18/07/2021 23:01

My view is that covid isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, we have very effective vaccines and we cannot live like caged hens for any longer.

If hospital capacity needs to be increased and more flexibility is needed with NHS staff contracts re moving them where needed in winter, so be it.

That will cost far less than the damage that lockdown causes, particularly to our DC’s education and life chances.

TheKeatingFive · 18/07/2021 23:02

The poll is interesting. It shows high support for restrictions maintained for a further month or so and very low support for restrictions continuing permanently.

It muddies the water by introducing non defined periods of time like ‘until coronavirus is under control globally’ with no context given as to what that would be based on or a likely timetable. Any data gathered on that measure isn’t very helpful as respondents don’t understand what timeframe they’re talking about or what they even means.

So all I’m getting is a degree of support for confined measures for a short time only.
