Why so many new cases?

I am probably being stupid and slow on the uptake, but could someone please explain to me why our case numbers are rising so quickly again, bearing in mind the huge proportion of people who have now had 2 or even just 1 vaccination? I am feeling very down in the dumps about it all again - it seems like a never-ending nightmare now and I can't see us getting our proper lives back for a very long time yet. So sad.

Because the vaccines help prevent hospitalization and death but they are not as effective at stopping you catching covid and passing it onto others.

GalacticDragonfly · 17/07/2021 11:53

Many people who’ve been vaccinated are now testing positive. Thankfully, the vaccine is reducing the number of those people ending up requiring hospital treatment, but they’re still testing positive and still spreading Covid to other people.

I'm not sure OP but this graph from NHS Scotland is worrying

Why so many new cases?
SquashMinusIsShit · 17/07/2021 11:59

Spreading through people who haven't been vaccinated, cases from the football & schools.

Geamhradh · 17/07/2021 11:59

Because the Delta variant is now predominant in the UK and other places. It spreads very quickly and most cases are asymptomatic or mildly ill. Obviously, it's spreading mainly among the unvaccinated who are mainly young people (so more likely to be coming into contact with other non-vaccinated people and you've got a vicious circle)
No vaccine is 100% effective, and some vaccinated people are testing positive, but thankfully very few.

sunshineandshowers21 · 17/07/2021 12:03

our local pub was packed out for the football last week, and now more than half the people there have tested positive, including people that have had both jabs. it seems to be mild in most, but there are a few that are really bad with it. one has had both doses and he was admitted to the hospital this morning with breathing difficulties. i’m glad i didn’t go to the pub now!

Anonaymoose · 17/07/2021 12:05

I think you'll find it's more than a few, and they're not just testing positive, many are getting sick. My local icu is full of double vaccinated on ventilators.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 17/07/2021 12:07

this will get even worse next week since some people are apparently planning to stop taking precautions because they’re „bored“ and have „done their bit“

unwuthering · 17/07/2021 12:19

The Delta variant is roughly twice as transmissible as the original virus; some say much more than twice as transmissible. And not enough people are fully vaccinated, and even those that are are passing it on, if not falling badly ill themselves. That's why experts all over the world are describing Bozo's plan to lift most restrictions as 'an unethical experiment'.

GreatBigBeautifulTommorow · 17/07/2021 12:26

Increased transmission from delta
Increased mixing and no social distancing
Unvaccinated

PrincessNutNuts · 17/07/2021 12:41

There are so many new cases because of our government’s covid strategy.

Exponential growth began again after the government pressed ahead with the May stage of the roadmap despite some of the four tests being failed.

Why? Correlation is not causation, and the rise in vaccinations on one scale for one group plotted with the cases for a slightly different group could mean nothing more than two things have just happened to have a big rise (with relatively few data points in that rise) at the same time.

This.

They should stop giving vaccinated people special treatment.

Genuine question: do the UK test more than these other countries?
noblegiraffe · 17/07/2021 13:23

Infection rates are going up in all age groups (some in older groups will be unvaccinated, some will catch it despite vaccination), but are going up most quickly in the younger, unvaccinated/less or only single vaccinated age groups.

It’s just very contagious. And things have opened up. I’ve been so careful but my DS has a bar job, and 3 weeks ago he caught it. Myself and DH, both double jabbed, then both caught it. Flu like symptoms, very tired, sore throats, coughing, loss of smell. We also have family and friends who have it at the moment, also double jabbed. All okay as in don’t need medical help, but definitely all poorly enough to feel pretty rubbish for a week or so. My DH is actually struggling still and normally very fit and active. Maybe without the vaccine we would have been worse.

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2021 13:27

Sorry, that was last week’s graphs, here are yesterday’s.

One might consider the wisdom of allowing the y12-24 group into nightclubs from Monday.

Now that the weather is so nice 17 yr old unvaxxed DS is out a lot. As are all his friends. On the Tube.

How many is that then? Are they in ICU because of Covid? How do you know?
delilahbucket · 17/07/2021 13:29

Worth bearing in mind that we are doing double the amount of tests now that we were in January, so when the news is scaremongering us with "highest number of cases since January", we are testing people who are asymptomatic now and therefore picking up more cases.

WeatherwaxOn · 17/07/2021 13:32

Not closing borders earlier
Crowds at sporting events not distancing - and I have first-hand confirmation that no id/neg tests were examined before entry for some
People not wearing masks when they can
People not keeping a distance when they can
Virus variants
General ignorance/stupidity/wilful ignorance
Govt policy contravening common sense (e.g schools not permitted to close).

I could go on but I think I might explode.

Interesting data from Israel

Cases appear to be rising in countries that have administered more vaccinations, is no-one concerned about this?
