@MikeHat

Yes I wondered about that. I suppose the GPs are able to judge who is clinically unable to wear a mask and your relative would be excused. I imagine they are trying to eliminate those who refuse on principle rather than those who cannot actually breathe.
But the issue with that though, is that not everyone who can’t wear masks, can’t do do due to breathing difficulties and the GP may not know their reasons or not be able to make a judgement on their other conditions

My daughter has Tourette’s - her tics are such that most of the time she either rips them up or can’t get them on her face in the first place. They also exacerbate her self injurious tics when she can get them on. The last time she managed to put one on she head butted a metal railing, knocked herself out and ended up in A&E. The time before that she punched and scratched herself in the face so much that she looked like she’d been beaten up.

Some people with Tourette’s have no issues with masks, some like my daughter do. A GP would know that she had it, but not the effect masks had on her

That tweet says they won’t readily make exceptions for people claiming to be exempt. I would read that as meaning you will need a conversation with someone to explain why you are exempt but if you are, you’ll still be seen. Maybe they’ve had a big problem with people taking the mick which has now had the effect of making it more difficult for those genuinely unable to wear a mask. Rotten situation for the people who are exempt to be in and it would be awful if they felt they were unable to attend the gp surgery when they ought to be going.

Hopefully the practice be sensible about this and make it clear that exceptions will still be accommodated.

Viviennemary · 16/07/2021 15:08

I would take it to mean that they will be quite strict about enforcing the rule and would only make exceptions if they saw fit.

Just posted this on another thread - Costa won't be insisting on or 'encouraging' customers to wear masks (from an email I just received).

Wearing face masks in cafes or restaurants is ridiculous. I could see the case for making them mandatory on public transport or in supermarkets, but not in places where people eat and drink. Whipping one on to go the bathroom is just theatre.
IHTC · 16/07/2021 16:06

No, I won't be wearing one. I think they do more harm than good.

What kind of harm are you talking about?
MercyBooth · 16/07/2021 16:14

Some women need to do certain breathing excersises to get through the pain of smear tests, impossible to do in a mask. They are avoiding going for smears as a result. Will surgery meet halfway and provide Valium/Dizepam? Assuming they are not misogynists.

In that circumstance, I’d be amazed if they made them wear a mask during the smear. A sensible “halfway” would be wearing a mask in the surgery apart from when the breathing exercises were going on. I’m not convinced that’s going to be a particularly common issue though.
IHTC · 16/07/2021 17:34

@PurpleDaisies Personally, I think they're really unhygienic. Especially the reusable ones. I don't think people think to wash them enough (being honest, that includes me). They're stashed in pockets, handbags and car glove boxes. They're probably teaming with germs. Terrible for the environment and I think they really should be medical grade to make any difference whatsoever.

Obviously, I'm not an expert. It's just my opinion Smile

Our masks are the same. I have bought various replacements of the disposable ones but the strings keep snapping** (even those with decent reviews on Amazon). I've bought the fabric ones too but the kids seem to lose them on a regular basis. I can't imagine our skanky old masks which have managed to last the course are doing anything useful, not least because there's big gaps in the sides.

My mum has been using the same 2 surgical style ones for the past year. They are gross and have probably developed their own microscopic ecosystem.

I recall a MN member saying they were interrogated whilst in hospital as to why they were not wearing a mask. It was due to oral rape, and understandably they struggled to tell them that...
MercyBooth · 16/07/2021 19:30

@XenoBitch Yes. He is in Laura Dodsworths book.

Againstmachine · 18/07/2021 16:55

Interesting a advisor to sage today saying masks are mostly useless.

MercyBooth · 18/07/2021 17:05

@Againstmachine Attempting to slam the breaks into reverse are they?

Could backfire hugely if people start to think they have been struggling in masks for nothing.

Againstmachine · 18/07/2021 17:46

@MercyBooth

Yep if all the mask wearing has been pointless, what else has been.

We have already had the separators in pubs debunked as being worse than having them.

gardeninggirl68 · 18/07/2021 17:49

Just binned mine at end of today's shift

No hurry to wear them again

SageBlue · 19/07/2021 15:05

@gardeninggirl68

It's personal choice now

So I'm not wearing one. Other people have the choice to come out or shop online etc

The maskless should stay in and shop online, leave the country free for the people who want to get out and about safely.
Againstmachine · 19/07/2021 17:14

Nope you are wanting someone to do different to normalality and what is legal you don't get to do that anymore.

TheVampiresWife · 19/07/2021 17:37

Because shopping is the only thing people leave the house to do Hmm

Exempt people have had to put up with this crap for over a year now. It feels, in recent days, as if those who say such ridiculous things are hoiking their judgy pants ever higher. I'm dreading going out tomorrow.

Againstmachine · 19/07/2021 17:41

Don't dread going out , what you do is no business of theirs.

treedragon · 19/07/2021 18:37

I am still wearing a mask AND observing social distancing and I have made it quite clear to work they are to respect my personal space and "risk assessment". ONe thing that will really naff me off is catching coviude from and irresponsible co-work with a penchant for irresponsible gallivant about to places like pubs, night clubs, cafes, aircraft etc. All of which are giant Covid petri dishes.

Imagine wanting to police where your work colleagues go, how much power do people want over other people's life's, it's getting scary.

Get a grip, this is pathetic.
