@UndercoverToad

New announcement. I’m pleased!

Sainsbury's and Tesco have joined the bookseller, Waterstones, which has said customers should wear masks to protect staff and other shoppers.

'should' wear? What does that mean? Will customers who are not be turned away?
gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 13:57

@Alondra

Masks are an annoyance but they are the fourth line of defence on indoor settings against the virus. A small annoyance that can have a big impact on transmission.
but they haven't have they.....the virus is still rampaging and changing. even with vaccinated majority

masks are doing nothing much it seems!

gardeninggirl68 · 15/07/2021 13:59

@Arrowheart i can assure you not one single customer will ever be turned away from any UK store for not wearing a mask

you could be exempt....so the questioning won't get far as nobody is allowed to go into detail over health or reasons for exemption

but shout about it on social media if it DOES happen.....

herecomesthsun · 15/07/2021 14:05

However, as a shopper I can imagine people being supportive if security were dealing with a difficult and antisocial customer that was putting other people at risk.

I live in a village. The retired people here are planning to be very careful. The community wants to support them.

Just saying.

herecomesthsun · 15/07/2021 14:08

oh and as for masks not being the complete solution. We know that

but there is good evidence now that they help quite a bit

Alondra · 15/07/2021 14:08

*but they haven't have they.....the virus is still rampaging and changing. even with vaccinated majority

As I said they are only a fourth line....

Until our populations are fully vaccinated 80% the virus will still go rampant specially with the Delta variant. A mask can still protect us against transmission, we had a young person working in the supermarket close to home who was Covid positive but he/she always wore a mask and didn't transmit the virus to colleagues or patrons.

Alondra · 15/07/2021 14:12

And we know he/she didn't transmit the virus because NSW health gives us a full scope of how the virus is transmitting in every suburb and the numbers, daily

JassyRadlett · 15/07/2021 14:28

We’ve got an R of about 1.3 with a virus with a natural R0 of nearly 7.

A lot of that is vaccines, but why are you so confident masks aren’t having an impact too?

Australia77 · 15/07/2021 14:40

Nope. Haven't been wearing one for a few weeks now. Hate them. I don't want mask wearing to become a thing. I think they impact breathing, they irritate my skin and I don't actually think they do anything. The only time I would wear them is if I was in a hospital and it was a requirement. Otherwise no way.

Moomala · 15/07/2021 14:56

Yes in the shop and anywhere crowded

observing the thousands of shoppers coming through our doors....they are straight under the chin or nose once in store and upon approaching the doors people are pulling out grubby, flimsy unwashed masks that are used over and over....arent you also supposed to sanitise hands before putting on/taking off a clean, sterile mask?

these cheap flimsy scraps from poundland coming out of pockets and bags are saving lives?

I am exempt, and mostly shop in Tesco. Will this mean I still need to continue to wear the ghastly lanyard so I don't get challenged/abused?

Well, you’re moving the goalposts here aren’t you? First it’s masks are doing nothing much based on rising case numbers. When pointed out that case numbers are thoroughly suppressed, you move on to the idea that masks aren’t helping because no one you see wears them properly (not my experience but all of us have different experiences of this!) and anyway you think flimsy bits of cloth can’t make a difference.

I don’t disagree that people not wearing masks properly massively reduces their effectiveness! I do disagree that it’s a reason to ditch them altogether.

On the effectiveness of cloth masks - given we’re looking at stopping aerosol droplets they won’t be perfect but any barrier should help. To test it, I’d suggest coughing and sneezing into your hand while wearing a mask, and then without one, to see how much gets stopped. Overall, the evidence base isn’t amazing either way but they seem to have a low to moderate impact on transmission.

As for the handwashing - that was mainly based on concerns about surface transmission in the early days, wasn’t it? When we were all diligently washing our hands before crowding into airless meeting rooms….

Masks aren’t perfect. They’re certainly not 100% preventive by any means, and a lot of people take the piss with them. That doesn’t mean they don’t have an impact.

I was going to do away with mine (thought process being you can't be exempt from a law which doesn't exist) but seeing the vitriol directed at those who won't be masking up come Monday, I've thought better of it. It's nuts. How can you be exempt from a thing that doesn't exist? And why should you have to 'prove' it?

I'm not confident that lanyards will help much anyway - they haven't stopped people having a go over the past year. Plus the anti masker wankers versus pious mask wearers divisiveness seems to have stepped up a level now it's (ostensibly) a choice to wear one. What a fucking mess.

Againstmachine · 15/07/2021 17:06

All these people getting excited about Tesco's announcement ect all they are doing is saying what government have said. They aren't all saying they are going to refuse service.

they aren't

It would be churlish to suggest that this is probably the government’s plan. Much better to have people angry with each other than with the government.

I don’t disbelieve anyone who says they’ve had challenge or abuse over not wearing a mask, but can I ask where you all live? Only because over a year of going into mask-y places I’ve never witnessed more than a ‘could you put your mask on?’ ‘No, I’m exempt’ interaction. I’d like to avoid accidentally moving to wherever you live!

alloalloallo · 15/07/2021 17:22

We live on the south coast. My teenage daughter has had lots of abuse, despite wearing a lanyard.

It’s never shop staff, she’s never been asked when we’ve been to hospital appointments. It’s always random members of the public, and always when she’s on her own or with one of her female friends - never with us or if she’s with a group of friends.

And some of the threads on here have been horrendous

Is is daft isn't it. We now have people saying they will continue to wear masks to show "they care", and then there are folks like us who feel the need to continue to wear the lanyard to basically say "please don't abuse me". It is fucking nuts.

I am hoping that a lot of people no longer wearing masks will mean I don't stand out anymore, therefore the chance of abuse will diminish. There is bound to be some tough guy who thinks he can approach an anxious lone woman though to make himself feel big. The assholes like that will still be assholes come the 19th.

That’s horrible, I’m so sorry that’s happened to her. As I say I’ve never observed it but I do believe you that it happens.

ODFOx · 15/07/2021 17:43

Yes.
My industry isn't loosening restrictions in the workplace at all. (Pharmaceutical/immunology) so I'm taking the advice from my colleagues over the relaxation of rules from the government and just maintaining masks and distancing for a while outside of work as well.

Florelei · 15/07/2021 17:45

I think I might have already posted on this thread but of course I will continue to wear a mask. It offers me a small amount of protection because I wear a proper mask and practice appropriate hygiene with it.

If I lived in an area where cases were low i think I probably wouldn’t bother with the mask, as they are definitely uncomfortable.

However, cases are crazy high here in the NE and still rising and our hospitalisations have tripled from around 200 in hospital to 600.

In the circumstances I’m in, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to wear a mask if you’re able to do so.
