I happened to notice that we had reached 1000 posts on the other thread - so I started a new one Smile.

Surely it makes sense from now on for those who continue to be at risk to use proper FFP3 masks to protect themselves.
Employers should be required to provide them for staff who need them.
This will allow them to participate safely in society, and will mean we no longer need to wear a mask to protect others.
No humility required.

Parker231 · 07/07/2021 19:56

Wearing a mask doesn’t protect you but protects those around you.

NotMyCat · 07/07/2021 19:57

@RoseZinfandel that's what I'm doing. I have a FFP2 one (CEV) and will be wearing that

Squirrelblanket · 07/07/2021 20:01

"Hell of a lot virtue signalling going on.

‘I wear a mask to protect others’ is going to be the new ‘stay the fuck home’"

Yup.

I'll be ditching mine and being judged doesn't bother me. Smile

Thanks to the other posters I just looked up the FFP3 mask. It does!

So, so so true. I am getting really irritated by this.
MurielSpriggs · 07/07/2021 20:07

Hell of a lot virtue signalling going on.

Harmless enough though! And it makes them feel better.

SlipperyDippery · 07/07/2021 20:18

I'm so fed up with this. It's because people don't wear masks that DS 30 can't leave his house, and he is double vaccinated

That’s horrible about your son, and I will wear a mask beyond a july 19th Flowers However masks do not prevent transmission of covid. Some masks may reduce the chance of transmitting it, but if it is absolutely critical for someone they don’t catch covid it isn’t really safe for them to be out even with everyone wearing masks.

SlipperyDippery · 07/07/2021 20:20

Plenty of other things that we could easily change may kill or injure others. Every car journey puts other people at risk. Many of those are really unnecessary. Should we legislate them away through criminal law? Apparently eight million people die each year due to our use of fossil fuels. Should we legislate against unnecessary use of the TV, more than two loads of washing a week, leaving the lights on? That change in the law would undoubtedly save lives. So why aren't we doing that? Veganism - the same. It stops innocent people from dying

Exactly. I will actually keep wearing a mask for the reassurance of those around me but the sanctimony of so many surrounding this issue absolutely stinks given how selective almost everyone is about what the can be arsed to do to protect others.

herecomesthsun · 07/07/2021 20:21

‘Stay the fuck at home’ was on my hate list second only to ‘act like you have covid’

Really?

Why?

Honestly, I find this fascinating. Mind you, I wouldn't have said "STF at home" as too aggressive.

"Act like you have covid" i.e. trying to help people change their mindset, has a point, though again I've never actually said it to anyone.

But why would you feel so angry about these ways of expressing the need or rationale for caution? I'm curious. Do you think it was unfair? Or what?

@Stuffin

I really hope the government don't back down on this.

I am more than happy to have a higher risk to myself as PP said.

If shops and other businesses want to mandate them that is fine. I will just choose to shop elsewhere just like those that insist on masks can choose to go the the businesses that still enforce them.

This
SlipperyDippery · 07/07/2021 20:27

@HermioneWeasley

A review of all the CDC data (American equivocal public health England) showed, at best, a very marginal benefit of mask wearing on transmission.

I won’t be bothering

Is there a link available for that? I would be genuinely interested to see because I’ve looked at the evidence for masks and don’t think it says what people getting so upset about others not wearing them seem to think it says.

I could only find this which is about cloth masks:

wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-0948_article

Stay the fuck at home was rude when 90% of people i know were only going out when necessary….so I found it very irritating

Act like you have covid made no sense whatsoever…at all

And i hate bananas…doesn’t mean im angry about it

Turquoisesol · 07/07/2021 20:32

I have seen people on mumsnet say they are so glad things can no longer get cancelled “cos of Covid”. Well, my local hospital just announced that they are at capacity because of Covid and will be postponing non essential services.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/07/2021 20:32

Stay home as much as possible….absolutely fine

MurielSpriggs · 07/07/2021 20:32

But why would you feel so angry about these ways of expressing the need or rationale for caution? I'm curious. Do you think it was unfair? Or what?

It never made me angry (I just tended to ignore), but I'm guessing it's down to the somewhat authoritarian scolding that it often entailed, the opportunity that some delighted in to micromanage other people's lives, and the sense that "my ethics are better than yours".

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/07/2021 20:35

And for the absence of doubt….and im sure you aren’t doing this….it would be a mistake to confuse loathing a term for refusing to comply with rules

I did stay at home as much as possible for example

chickenyhead · 07/07/2021 20:35

I think trite slogans from either extreme are insulting.

Most people have done their best.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 07/07/2021 20:36

Most people have done their best

Yep….apparently even the government were surprised at the level of compliance

motogogo · 07/07/2021 20:37

Very few people are wearing them correctly, if at all now. I would suggest those who wish to continue to mask get proper fitting masks (flimsy paper and cloth barely work anyway)

Baystard · 07/07/2021 20:58

Arguing about mask wearing is the epitome of pointless.

Some members of the community care about those around them enough to put up with minor inconvenience* for the benefit of others. Some value their own comfort more highly than the safety of others. I don't say that as an inflammatory statement, it's just how things are.

*granted for a small number of people a mask is more than a minor inconvenience.

MercyBooth · 07/07/2021 21:08

@Parker231 What @Enb76 is trying to say is that no one gave a shit pre Covid. I can imagine the reaction on here if id started a thread saying i thought ppl should wear a mask to protect my DH from the flu. He has COPD so flu is a risk to him. The reason ppl give a shit now is because it affects them They are just self in virtues clothing.

IcedPurple · 07/07/2021 21:10

This post so perfectly illustrates that @SmidgenofaPigeon was absolutely spot on.

It's just how things are.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 07/07/2021 21:19

Nah, @Baystard is right on the money. There's no slogan that's not improved by a bit of swearing, either Grin
