I happened to notice that we had reached 1000 posts on the other thread - so I started a new one Smile.

I would say obesity and individualism are linked

Obesity and capitalism are linked. I don't think it has anything to do with individualism. If there is a way to make a profit from cheap food, people are going to damn sure going to find a way of getting us to eat more of it

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 16:58

Undercover there is some correlation quite interesting, we have heavy marketing, inequality and other stuff that makes us more obese generally

Do you think many have sacrificed a lot this last 18 months?

UndercoverToad · 09/07/2021 17:04

@MarshaBradyo far too much. It’s been dreadful in the UK. I think we’ve had one of the worst death rates and responses worldwide. We should have been proactive, lockdown earlier, closed borders and had clear guidance from above. That’s the government. Science wise, we’ve been brilliant and the government should have listened to the scientists.

UndercoverToad · 09/07/2021 17:07

@Enb76 @MarshaBradyo

This map is really interesting - maps out individualistic cultures worldwide.

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 17:08

Undercover Yes I agree far too much

But I’m afraid science was not on our side in the early days

The WHO said don’t close borders and SAGE early Feb 2020 minutes said do peak now not winter - not blaming them but I was surprised to read it

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 17:10

Also I’ve been pondering on what made it harder also made us get to vaccines

Attractive / international / competitive- maybe linked to individualism

A few countries managed it successfully- with efficacy

Possibly something in that too

UndercoverToad · 09/07/2021 17:29

@MarshaBradyo I have also pondered the exact same thing! Yes - I think it has secured us the vaccines. So maybe it’s the thing that’s saved us? OR - as this is a worldwide pandemic, with new mutations arising worldwide - should we have vaccinated equally, everywhere as the best way to combat Covid?

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 17:40

I think we’re trying

If you listen to Oxford team on at cost vaccine their vision was incredibly altruistic

I don’t know about diverting vaccines as some get upset that 12 plus don’t have it here and other countries do. I’d probably choose to keep it if I could and JCVI agree but I recognise I’m interested in my society which has been hit so hard.

herecomesthsun · 12/07/2021 12:52

and here is a thread on vaccines and the science behind them by an Oxford Professor of Primary Care Medicine. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1414294003479089154.html

And here is a very good article in the FT on the political manoeuvring that led Johnson to drop masks despite the scientific consensus in support of them.

The Mayor has announced that wearing masks will continue in London- thank goodness.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 14/07/2021 08:45

@Parker231not ‘in London’- on the transport network yes, but not ‘in London’ in shops/bars etc.

Parker231 · 14/07/2021 08:48

Sorry - yes on transport although some shops are also maintaining masks. Our local deli, gift shop and chemists have signs up saying that masks must continue to be wore - hopefully other shops will follow.

It's behind a paywall. Is there any other access?

herecomesthsun · 14/07/2021 09:06

It wasn't behind a paywall for me, going through twitter.

This any better?
