Thank you. And wishing the best to all the other LC Mumsnetters out there.
Please could those of us who have had Long Flu also have some good wishes? Flu in my case leads to pneumonia, hospitalisation, months of fatigue, etc, etc. But nobody has ever paid it any attention, because it's not Covid.

BTW, I'm delighted if those with Long Covid are being cared for and considered. But Covid is not the only "minor" illness which creates problems.

I'd like to see a GP for a severe and long-term but non-Covid-related condition, btw, but no such luck.

Is this 100k based on Ferguson's models?

The one that has never been right yet

The one that has been criticised by scientists for years

The one for which the code was examined and it was found to be very basic and limited. Even undergard maths students managed to improve it in less than a day...

..........it's that model, isn't it?
@April506 come on honestly ?

60,000 people die in one year with no social distancing or anything from flu in 2018 and 128,000 die from covid with ridiculous lockdowns in place these are not even comparable I'm afraid.
Yes, and besides that, 60,000 people didn't die of flu in 2018. That's a myth. It was about 22,000. The rest of the excess winter deaths were a different assortment of diseases and conditions including pneumonia.

loulouljh · 08/07/2021 20:51

yawn. need to get on with life now.

owlbethere · 08/07/2021 20:52

@CrouchEndTiger12

Out of population of almost 70 million, 100000 cases that's what 0.14% of the population with covid. That's staggeringly low.
Every day!?

@Tealightsandd
"This is what makes me wonder. America mostly used mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna). Although a smaller number had Johnson and Johnson. We used a lot of AZ. Is there a link? Potentially we might need to give mRNA boosters to people, particularly the vulnerable, who've had Astrazeneca. When we get more supplies. Supply is tight right now. Of course it might just be a coincidence. And Astrazeneca takes longer to build up protection, so possibly will work very well in the longer term".
I was really surprised to hear about the deaths, but they were virtually all in the over 50s, some of whom were more vulnerable anyway and I wonder if their immune response to the vaccine was less strong. And no vaccine is 100% obviously, 90% is optimistic and probably lower in many cases.
There's also the question of the AZ manufactured in India, rumours (which could well be false) that it does not produce an immune response in some. Fortunately we both had the Pfiser, but I think every vaccine has some sort of question hanging over it. Interesting to see if they do decide that our boosters can be a different vaccine, giving us different benefits.
All of this makes me think that DH and I will hang onto our masks for a while yet. He's over 70 with a dodgy heart and why take risks?
I could wish we were 25 years younger!

Getyourjab · 08/07/2021 21:08

Shock, horror! We might all get a virus related to the common cold!

Getyourjab · 08/07/2021 21:09

Get your vaccine, get a grip, get on with life!

April506 · 08/07/2021 21:16

Only quoting from our marvelous gutter press

Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 21:26

But if those cases lead to fewer hospitalisations and deaths because of the number of people vaccinated then the number of case numbers isn’t as relevant

No its not but with an NHS with 200k beds and running at 95% capacity most of the time, you don't need too many people to overwhelm it and stop it getting through the back log of 5.7m patients.

I think they should stop reporting the cases, it’s scare mongering

Yes lets not stop reporting news worthy facts, just good news stories and happy clappy people at fun re education camps.

Mrstreehouse · 08/07/2021 21:35

Flu alone killed more than 20,000 people in England in the winter of 2017-18. There was no talk of the need to introduce restrictions or curtail freedoms then. We need to get things in perspective, it might be helpful to have some comparisons with other death rates for context,

Report hospitalisations and deaths AND discharges and recoveries.

We never hear the good news.

I havent rtft. Why does the figure stop at 100,000 cases, if cases are supposed to double every 6 days?
Itsalmostlikeadance · 08/07/2021 22:18

2 things:

 1. long Covid has messed up my life. And my family’s. Can you still take your kids to the park without collapsing? Bully for you. LC will eff up more lives all over the country if we let Covid rip.

 2. whilst LC is disabling peoples lives -Boris will be shamed into another U turn. Too late for many many people.

Yes, without restrictions. I cannot comprehend why people keep rolling this one out as if it actually proves something.

Covid killed 150k with restrictions and lockdowns. I don't understand why you think that's comparable.

Plus flu - even in that year - was not a novel virus with exponential growth.

AnTeallach · 08/07/2021 22:20

@etopp
Of course - best wishes to the Long Flu'ers too!
@getyourjab
Being fully vaccinated doesn't stop you from getting Covid. I hope you and your loved ones don't get it. I've been luckher than many, but have still lost 8 of the past 12 months to it.

* one of my dose of a z was the Indian made dose, how is it different to the normal one?
It’s not, it’s identical in every way.
Localocal · 08/07/2021 22:53

Well said @LilyPond2

"Government has clearly given up on trying to protect vulnerable people for whom the vaccine is less effective, and vulnerable children who are not eligible for the vaccine".

I would add the Government is showing a casual disregard for healthy young people too. 18-30 year olds are only partly protected because they aren't eligible for a second dose yet, and under 18s aren't eligible at all. But we know that a high percentage of children who are infected will end up with long covid, even if they don't get sick initially.

It's a gross dereliction of duty not to vaccinate 12-17 year olds. It's another dereliction of duty not to give young adults their second doses as soon as possible. And it's a third dereliction of duty not to keep infection control measures, like face masks, in place until they do.

I thought until now that the government was actually trying, incompetently, to do the right thing. Now I think they are just trying to pretend it's all over so they look like they fixed it. It's not. And they didn't.

marktayloruk · 08/07/2021 23:00

It's something that we used to get - a disease that there isn't a full.cure.for yet. Our ancestors had to live with them - so must we.

Mrstreehouse · 08/07/2021 23:42

@Madhairday it’s just one example and not the only disease that is causing deaths every year. We need to get some perspective, if we had covid deaths reported next to other deaths that might help curb the paranoia.

SSCCLL · 08/07/2021 23:46

Meh. I’ve had both my jags and still had it twice. I survived. Get on with your life
