Should we be worried about our children?

I know several families that are having to isolate due to children being in contact with cases at school. It seems like the Government is going for a herd immunity strategy amongst the young. Should we be concerned about this? I know the risk of dying is super low but I’ve seen a few doctors on Twitter (respected UK Drs) saying we shouldn’t be playing fast and loose with a novel virus as we don’t know the long term impacts.
What are your thoughts?

That a lot of children are probably immune already anyway.

FindingMeno · 04/07/2021 09:00

It does concern me, for the same reasons you've stated.

I've posted this before, but here it is again. My school has been horribly affected as Covid has ripped through some year groups, but especially y8.
A handful of cases at the start resulted in the whole of y8 having to isolate - by the end of year 8's 10 days isolation, over 50 kids had tested positive from year 8 alone. Some were still testing positive on day 9 of isolation - those kids are still off now - some have minor symptoms.while others are pretty ill. Imagine if they had just carried on at school and not in isolation - I believe the numbers would have been even more enormous. Staff have also been affected on various levels - all had had at least one vaccination.

Well there are only two options for children, OP. Herd immunity or vaccination. Take your pick.

Yes it comes down to this

Some are worried about one over the other. JCVI making decision

User5827372728 · 04/07/2021 09:02

I’m concerned, but because of the amount of isolations they are having to do. It’s really unhealthy mentally and physically to stay home for 10 days and then another 10 days and then another 10 days etc

User5827372728 · 04/07/2021 09:03

My friends 4 year old has had to isolate 40/70 days.

Exactly this
MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2021 09:03

My main concern is isolations too. Cost to children is high.

So either vaccine or herd immunity and stop above.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 04/07/2021 09:06

As others have said herd immunity or vaccination, I won’t be vaccinating my youngest DC so her immunity it is. I’m more concerned about their education, the amount they’re missing and the effect on their under exposed immune systems and the effects of other common illnesses they aren’t being exposed to

ATieLikeRichardGere · 04/07/2021 09:06

It’s not an ideal situation but I’m not sure there is much of an alternative. We can’t endure more lockdown and we still need to vaccinate the more at risk first before we can get to kids. I am just hoping that I get my second vaccine before it gets our house but I think that’s probably unlikely.

OliveTree75 · 04/07/2021 09:06

My feelings exactly. Only concerned about isolation. My DS already had covid in march, and is fed up on day 8 of his isolation for one case in his bubble of 90, for a child in the other class who he had never even heard of.
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 04/07/2021 09:06

Given the new facilities talked about recently for long covid in children, I disagree with the herd immunity theory. Not to mention if the virus is left to run through society the more chance of variants we have.

AnyFucker · 04/07/2021 09:08

Yes. I am worried.

About their education. About their mental health. About the increasing isolation and lack of safeguarding for children in violent homes. About the undiagnosed and unmonitored serious illnesses bubbling under. About their reducing ability to fight other infections than COVID.

Not about COVID itself. The country has collectively lost its fucking mind where that is concerned.

MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2021 09:10

Olive so bad. We’ve been lucky consisted with other schools but I found isolation of half school due to one case maddening recently. Negative PCR and still stuck at home.

Even adults got exercise in lockdown. No other group has had to isolate this much, for the benefit of others groups too. I find that part unethical.

Also sad to hear on radio many children have dropped out IG education due to above.

amylou8 · 04/07/2021 09:11

Children are much more at risk from our our response to covid than to covid itself.

MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2021 09:11

Compare to and of..

duvetdrama · 04/07/2021 09:14

But is it really a choice between herd immunity and vaccination? Once all of the adults are double jabbed then surely the case numbers will go right down, less chance of kids picking it up then surely?

MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2021 09:15

I agree.

We wrecked so much to delay their infection and they’ll get it anyway.

Most of society seemed to be ok with it, awful.

Pinotwoman82 · 04/07/2021 09:17

Totally agree AnyFucker

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 04/07/2021 09:17

Three options actually. Herd immunity, vaccinations and continued isolation.

You could lock all DC away indefinitely, virtual school from now on, no playdates, close parks and playgrounds, scrap all sports and activities. That is an option. But the harms clearly outweigh the risks imo.

Moonme · 04/07/2021 09:29

Was there not another way though in which the Government could have invested more in schools to enable more outdoor learning/smaller class sizes etc been more progressive in it’s thinking?
We seem to have been put in to a
hobsons choice situation, but close v open wasn’t the only option. Particularly now whilst there is an escalating rise in case numbers?

OP posts:
SchrodingersUnicorn · 04/07/2021 09:38

@Moonme yes absolutely. See any of hundreds of threads started by teachers suggesting these ideas. But that would involve government investment in education.
Unfortunately when teachers suggested these ideas to make schools safer and keep them over, many posters on here told them they were lazy and wanted schools to close.

It would still be a choice between vaccination or acquired infection

Possibly slowed down a bit but cases would be too high and mixing in general society still active for a very transmissible variant to spread in the age group.

This is very true.
