@Tanfastic

I don't like to say online where I work but it's certainly somewhere that regulations are very strict. I am the only person who does not wear a mask, but I listen to colleagues moan all day about wishing they could take them off. It's not something I talk about unless I'm directly asked about it. So over the year, most people have now brought it up in conversation.

I have lost no friends over this. Unlike on Mumsnet, everyone I know listens to my reasons and either respects that I don't take my decision flippantly, or actively kick themselves that they didn't do the same from the beginning.

I think it's harder to undo it when you've been wearing them already.

I'm glad I took the stance I did right from the beginning. I would not like to be this pregnant and struggling for breath in the heat with a mask on now.

nordica · 01/07/2021 10:23

@TeddingtonTrashbag

There are s lot of arrogant and selfish people on MN who want to mandate masks for everyone when there is simply no logical reason. No one is going to stop people wearing masks if they really want to.
Masks protect other people. Have you still not understood that after all this time?

But yes, great news. Looking forward to getting covid. Shame the most fervent anti-maskers also tend to be anti-vaxxers so they are more likely to be going around spreading the virus. Hmm

VaccineSticker · 01/07/2021 10:24

They will back track on it just like they have done in Israel, where they have had an extremely successful vac program but they have had to bring masks back very recently.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 10:25

*I don't differentiate, thats the point.

You either have a medical reason for not wearing one, or you are an arsehole to me*

@IcedSpice why do assume that exempt people are vulnerable, though? Why would you feel the need to give someone with PTSD or a neurological condition a 'wide berth'?

Mumbletum · 01/07/2021 10:26

@nordica

Nah, I'm double jabbed, social distance and do LFT.

And I will stop wearing a mask asap because I hate them and I don't believe they do anything especially the way people wear them.

I didn't want to be vaccinated but I did it to protect others so you're wrong about motivation.

What a load of polarising tosh.

Choosing not to wear a mask when they're no longer mandatory doesn't make you a fervent anti-mask anti-vaxxer permanently infected with covid.

@supermoonrising

Slightly unrelated perhaps, but it amazes me how so many people have been wearing thick fabric unbreathable masks for more than 12 months. I tried one of my parents ones the other day and found it so stifling and was like “oh this is why people hate them!”. I struggled to keep it on for more than 10 minutes. Whereas I find many of the breathable and disposable light blue ones (cheap off Amazon) aren’t that uncomfortable at all for longer periods.
Because there is already more than enough non-recyclable plastic crap already in the giant mounds of landfill? Hmm
whatswithtodaytoday · 01/07/2021 10:28

There is scientific evidence that masks help reduce the spread of respiratory diseases. Covid is airborne, it spreads like cigarette smoke.

But no-one cares, so I'm SO looking forward to getting Covid in the near future. I'm just hoping I manage to get my second vaccination in first - one month to go, unless I can bring it forward.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 10:29

Also @nordica if you believe (and science backs you up here) that vaccines slow spread, by 19 July most adults will be vaccinated. Ergo not wearing a mask won't be such an issue in terms of spread.

Why then are you so worried about people not wearing them?

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 10:30

So much fuss about wearing a bit of fabric is beyond childish and ridiculous.

(unless extreme valid reasons) everyone should be used to them by now.

It's funny how little kids in other countries have to manage without whining, and how women have had to wear a mask to give birth (hats off to them, that sounds extreme, even with a medical one who are easier to tolerate).

Refusing to wear a masks doesn't make you superior, it makes you a twat. And a selfish one who impact people who CAN"T wear them too.

This!

I mean, I'll be glad when I don't have to wear one any more but seriously, the amount of whinging about them has been ridiculous.

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 10:31

ow so many people have been wearing thick fabric unbreathable masks for more than 12 months.

because they are not unbreathable? Hmm Pretty sure if they were, we would have passed out by now.

There's a reason why people don't put a plastic bag on their head for very long, and it has nothing to do with fashion.

If you've had one dose you already have considerable protection against serious illness, particularly if you've had the Pfizer which gives up to 94% protection from one dose alone. So try not to worry too much.
randomkey123 · 01/07/2021 10:32

Sadly this pandemic has tripped a lot of people into very severe health anxiety, and removing masks is going to be really hard to accept for some, as shown on this thread.

I personally can't wait to bin the bastards, and haven't been anywhere that necessitates wearing one other than the hairdresser so I am very relieved and looking forward to a trip to John Lewis kitchen department Grin

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 10:33

I can't believe there are still people deciding which reasons may be 'extreme' enough for exemption. What would you consider these to be, out of interest?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 01/07/2021 10:34

No one is going to stop people wearing masks if they really want to.

Quite. And yes, most masks protect others rather than the wearer, so for those who'd like mask wearing to continue surely they can just swap to masks that protect the wearer instead.

Crinkle77 · 01/07/2021 10:35

I might wear one on the bus in the morning cos its usually rammed full of kids. I've got my 2nd jab in 2 weeks time so might exercise a bit of caution until I've got the full benefit of that then can't wait to ditch it. sparemonitor · 01/07/2021 10:35
@Lucidas incredibly dense…or maybe pregnant, like me? Or under 16? Or so immunocompromised that you can’t have the vaccine?

Sorry to be “collateral damage”.
pregnancy isn't a contraindication to the vaccine, neither is immunocompromise.

Cam77 · 01/07/2021 10:37

@apocalypsehow
Well the overwhelming scientific consensus for the past 12months+ is that masks work in limiting the spread of a pandemic virus which is sometimes asymtomatic. So you've been endangering people around you more than necessary just to save yourself a little comfort and convenience. Forgive me if I'm missing something here.

because they are not wearing a mask, and i don't judge, I steer clear - what is your issue with that?
dworky · 01/07/2021 10:40

@Whatalottachocca

People who want to wear them can carry on. Meanwhile, the rest of us can smile at each other again. (I won't actually believe it until I hear it come out of Bojo's mouth though!)
Oh, sweet summer child.
listeningparty · 01/07/2021 10:40

I've always worn a mask when legally required without complaining about it, but I'll be glad to stop wearing them as soon as it's allowed. I expect the majority of people will stop wearing them.

I will keep hold of mine though as I expect they'll have to come back at a later date - very sceptical about the whole pandemic being over this summer.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 10:42

By saying that they're either vulnerable or arseholes you are judging, though.

Exactly! My DS doesn't wear one due to his autism. I care not if that's not extreme enough for others, it's pretty extreme to live with him.

Regular testing, hand washing, santising, social distancing and getting jagged would all show that I'm not putting anyone at any significant risk.

Cloth on my face won't change the fact that I've never tested positive and that I don't know anyone who has been sick with the virus. I know some, not close, acquaintances who have had positive tests (they have to test regularly) but I don't know anyone who has been ill.
