I think there was a study into the efficacy of masks in surgery, carried out on Denmark maybe? Basically ran for a few months, operations were split into masked and unmasked surgeons. No difference found in outcomes. Suggested that masks aren't clinically useful but the psychological effect of them was too ingrained to be challenged - basically, people feel like they should work, so people want to see them in use.

sadperson16 · 01/07/2021 09:59

The moral high ground gang will continue to wear them.

RunnerDown · 01/07/2021 09:59

@TeddingtonTrashbag
Your tone is sneering and unpleasant. It’s a reflection of what is wrong in this country at the moment. An inability to accept that other people may have different views to yourself for perfectly valid reasons without sneering at them. There are people who are vulnerable. There are health care workers who must be dreading another wave ( even if the % of hospitalisations is lower than before , a low percentage of a very high number of cases is still a high number) . There ar3 worries about children experiencing long COVID.
I have seen absolutely nothing in your posts which is nuanced or even displayed any degree of critical thinking

wasthataburp · 01/07/2021 10:00

Haven't worn one for months bar a hospital appointment. Really hope this is true.

JudgeRindersMinder · 01/07/2021 10:00

@WouldBeGood

Fingers-bloody-crossed!

Though I’m in Scotland so probably masked forever 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hear you, no doubt Nippy will keep us muzzled for a few extra weeks, just because she can
sweetheartyparty · 01/07/2021 10:01

I won't except if I have a cold.

apocalypsehow · 01/07/2021 10:01
@apocalypsehow so do you disregard any rules you don’t agree with? Why do you think you know more than scientists that recommend masks?
I don't participate in anything that I think is illogical or harmful or purely performative but which has no real benefit.

I can only do my best navigating these issues. We all draw our boundaries in life and I'm simply not willing to engage in something that I think is detrimental. It's encouraging to hear so many people agree with me in real life (and online sometimes too) but I'm saddened they feel they have to carry on anyway for fear of abuse from others. They're more comfortable wearing the damn things under their noses than not at all. We've come to a strange place in this past year.

But it will pass. It will be interesting to see how we look back on it in years to come.

An elderly acquaintance passed out in the shops in this recent heat because she was afraid to remove her mask. Like I say, things are looking up now and this will all pass soon enough hopefully.

You either have a medical reason for not wearing one, or you are an arsehole to me.

Do you think maybe, just maybe this sort of nonsense was all part of a plan to divert from the real arseholes?

wasthataburp · 01/07/2021 10:03

@TheVampiresWife

Does it impact you in any way if others continue to wear a mask?

Yes, if you're hard of hearing and rely on lip-reading (something I didn't realise I did so much until masks came in).

I don't think enough people realise what happens when you don't wear one. Nothing really... it's not exciting

I'm exempt and I've had glares, abuse, threats, been told I'm a disease breathed tramp, been spat at... I wear a lanyard though and I think that's like a trigger for some people. Rather than think 'exempt person' and get on with their day they think 'piss taker' and have a pop. For a while it was every time I went out - it got better for a while a few months ago but I've noticed comments and judgy looks again recently, which is bonkers when you consider nobody will be wearing them in a few weeks (unless you want to).

Oh my god that is terrible. I don't wear one and neither do a lot of people I know and literally nothing like this has ever happened. No one has once said anything or been nasty. If anything people are more friendly in shops etc as they can see a smile back.

I'm really disgusted to hear you have been treated this way.

ThyNameIsDave · 01/07/2021 10:05

@apocalypsehow I can't say what I really want to say because I'm following Mnet rules but suffice to say I disagree with everything you say and am thankful that the vast majority of people are not arrogant and selfish.

apocalypsehow · 01/07/2021 10:06

@kindaclassy

Societal pressure is clearly very powerful.

so if someone doesn't agree with not spitting on the floor, no smoking indoors, they should be free to do as they please?

Yes, I can see how that would work... you mean people should follow YOUR rules and beliefs, not their own basically.

That's quite an odd response to what I've said. I don't do things that I think are detrimental to me or others. Spitting on the floor and smoking are certainly on that list.

I think the endless putting on and removing of masks spreads germs. Far too much touching your face, masks in and out of pockets, masks not being washed and simply stashed hastily in a glove compartment because people are afraid of getting funny looks or abuse.

It also doesn't bother me in the slightest if people wear masks. I just feel sorry for those who have told me that they wish they had the confidence to stop wearing them as they disagree with them.

MrsExpo · 01/07/2021 10:06

I have mixed feelings about this news. One the one hand, I hate wearing a mask in shops (but I've got used to it). On the other, cases are rising again, even if that's not being mirrored in hospitalisations, so we should all be doing our bit to control it.

Or, do we just have to accept that this bloody disease is here to stay and we've just got to learn to live with it and get on with our lives.

Tanfastic · 01/07/2021 10:06

@apocalypsehow

This past year of enforced mask wearing has been really surreal to me. I've never worn one. Never owned one. I said from the beginning that I don't believe they are at all useful and in fact are detrimental to the cause the way the majority of people use them. Thorough hand washing and keeping out of people's space is more than enough. I can't participate in the theatre of something I truly believe is unhelpful to the pandemic.

They're apparently mandatory at my place of work, in shops, at my midwife appointments etc etc. I live in scotland where it feels like masks are going to stick around forever at this rate! I've never worn one and never been bothered by anyone about the fact that I don't wear one. I never lie about why I don't wear one. I decided as soon as they were made "mandatory" that if anyone asked why I wasn't wearing one, I would tell them.

I don't think enough people realise what happens when you don't wear one. Nothing really... it's not exciting. My life has carried on just the same. I wash my hands more diligently, keep away from people, and follow the same social restrictions as everyone else. But nothing bad happens if you disagree that masks are helpful.

I've name changed for this as the abuse I got off Mumsnetters for saying this at the beginning of the pandemic was really over the top. I notice now that a lot of people are saying to me that they wish they had taken a similar stand a year ago as now they feel they can't take off the masks for fear of... something. I don't know what.

It's truly been a bizarre experience to walk around maskless this entire time and still interact with people in the same way. No one has ever been nasty to me or been anything other than pleasant and chatty as normal. I've had a few people ask me why I don't wear one and their response has always been how they wish they'd stood their ground about it from day one too.

It's been a strange year. I'm glad to see restrictions gradually easing and normality on the horizon.

I have seen lots of non mask wearers getting abuse or told off in shops and asked to put one on...this for one is why I'd not want the hassle. So I just wear one. Do you not get this?

wasthataburp · 01/07/2021 10:07

@moulderingoldlady

I have just ordered a load more masks, was running low. Me and my family will carry using them, the virus does not know that it is Freedom Day and suddenly become uncontagious. Still going to social distance too. The WHO recommends it also.
As is your choice to do so
BountyIsUnderrated · 01/07/2021 10:07

In Wales Drakeford has said they won't relax restrictions until every adult in Wales has been vaccinated (what if they refuse)? There are also no plans to scrap social distancing, devolution is taking the p*ss, I am so fed up of the rules being different across the uk.

Good luck to you. I'm glad that I don't know anyone like you in real life.

I've never met a single person as het up about this as I have on Mumsnet.

For all of you in England, enjoy the 19th when it comes. I hope the news is correct and I hope scotland isn't far behind Smile

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 10:09

There are s lot of arrogant and selfish people on MN who want to mandate masks for everyone when there is simply no logical reason. No one is going to stop people wearing masks if they really want to.

@SirSamuelVimes

Yes!! Can't bloody wait.
Your namesake wouldn't agree with you.

Delta is far more transmissable, so what do the UK govt suggest? Open up and drop restrictions.

I truly hope I'm wrong, but the UK is already perceived by other countries to be an incubation pot for Delta. Partly because of the reports of people refusing to comply with the scientific advice. Note that the UK govt doesn't always follow the science (until it's too late, at any rate).

Sadly, I don't think this is going away any time soon. Still, never mind, eh? Those who are CV will just have to suck that up, too, same as they've had to suck up being treated like dirt and demonised by this disgrace of a government.

Angel2702 · 01/07/2021 10:10

@Watapalava

why are people surprised? ALL legal restrictions are ending on July 19th - that means all legal restrictions inc masks, 2m, 1m rule etc

Everything that has been made illegal will be stopped so of course it inc masks.

They never said all legal restrictions though. They said all legal restrictions on socialising, rule of six, limits on numbers etc. They always said masks and social distancing would be reviewed separately.
apocalypsehow · 01/07/2021 10:14

@Tanfastic

That's just awful. I hate to hear this. No, I can honestly say that I've never had any hassle. I have twice been asked in a shop if I have one and have politely replied "no, sorry I don't wear masks" and that was the end of that.

I don't shop recreationally as I've never enjoyed that but I certainly don't avoid shops so I've had a great many encounters with people throughout the pandemic.

Shop staff are chatty and pleasant. Other shoppers continue to engage in small talk with me in the aisles and at tills as normal. Nothing feels different except that everyone around me is wearing masks. Quite surreal. I've seen the occasional person here and there also not wearing masks but I've never seen anyone in any bother over it.

I can't even say that people are more understanding at the moment as I'm heavily pregnant, because this has been my experience from day one.

I also do not wear a mask at work where we have been told they are mandatory.

whynotwhatknot · 01/07/2021 10:15

i dont think im goin g to stop completely on the 19th it hasnt gone away just because the government says its ok has it

Where do you work out of interest? Wouldn't get away with that where I work!

Doodlebug71 · 01/07/2021 10:17

@wasthataburp: I'm curious. Those in my family who are exempt have worn masks anyway, because they understand the science behind this one. That is, it one of the carriers is people's breath, and there have been so many other people not distancing, or not wearing a mask, or a combination of those that they decided the viral load in an enclosed space wasn't something they were prepared to risk. So they mask, and will continue to mask.

We've known for a long time now that it's airborne, so for the UK govt to drop mask wearing now would be appalling. It's not a great move to refuse to wear one, either, for the same reasons.

Could not agree more about the arrogant and selfish.. but doesn't give a monkey about anyone else and is too stupid to understand they will suffer the effects too?

Not someone wearing a mask to protect you, that's for sure.
