😂 Finding it hilarious that people will want to book a holiday to Scotland because they feel safer due to the mask wearing...... You might want to check out our covid numbers they are through the roof as Scotland had a lower immunity starting point so now it's rife!

Although it's a great place for a holiday good luck also finding somewhere most places have been booked out since March time!

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2021 10:17

People who don't want to wear them can just stay the fuck at home and let the rest of us get on with taking the most minimal of precautions

People who want to wear them can carry on while the rest of us get on with our lives.

puppeteer · 05/07/2021 10:48

But there’ll be a middle ground, @SirVixofVixHall.

the government isn’t saying “don’t wear masks”, it’s saying “use your common sense”.

Or do you want a middle ground that is basically the same as now?

Thing is, it’s all a balancing act. And while there is arguably good reason for imposing legal guidance in the height of a severe pandemic, we’ve now got such good mitigation in the vaccine (+ t&t, etc.). Surely you see why people are questioning it and arguing for the removal of the legal mandate.

Yep there’s no chance the top para will happen

The anger will go or maybe not.

@UrAWizHarry actually with the delta and Kent variants research shows that for the majority of masks they aren't effective as the viral load required for infection is less and smaller particles easily escape the majority of masks and build up in the air.
It's why the messenging changed to well ventilated or outdoors as this doesn't have viral build up risk from smaller aerosols.

If you are within proximity to someone else for more then 15 minutes even if both wearing a mask your likely to test positive if the other person is with the new variants due to the airborne and aerosol nature.

The original variant masks did reduce spread but not the new ones so the studies you refer to are now superceded due to variants.

Also only a FFP3 grade mask worn correctly and disposed of or a positive pressure system protects anyone 100%.

Suggest you do some more research before spouting studies 😉

Yeah... not actually true if you look into the details.

But sure, wearing a mask is a huge hardship. I mean, you literally have to remember to take one out and affix it to your face and... yeah.

But freedom! Eh?

Scottishskifun · 05/07/2021 11:54

@UrAWizHarry I do look into the details my DH works in public health and gets regular updates from the scientific community. Why do you think that health care workers repeatedly ask for the NHS to provide FFP3 masks to all and not just ICU covid wards?!

I actually can no longer wear a mask and have exemption as I have long covid and severe breathlessness within a few minutes of putting one on. Came through my DS nursery as asystomatic case and child X got it from their parent who works in the local hospital (so constantly wears a mask....) So actually yes wearing a mask for me is a great hardship I struggle to breathe.

sadperson16 · 05/07/2021 12:05

Its not hard to stick a bit of dirty paper over your mouth for 10 minutes.

Its not hard at all, it is pointless though.

I do rather pity those who only have access to a dirty bit of paper
nordica · 05/07/2021 14:45

Those who talk about using dirty rags they dig out from a coat pocket just make me think they must have awful personal hygiene.

Do you wear the same underwear and socks all week too? Only wash your kitchen tea towels and cleaning cloths once a month? If not, then why is it any different with a cloth mask? Just wear a clean one every time and throw them in the wash with your clothes, it's not hard.

CottageGardener · 05/07/2021 14:49

@JohnnyLuLus

I don't think it's the right time to drop masks. I feel sorry for people who work in shops who will be at risk, as well as those who are medically unable to have the vaccine - they need everyone to protect them. Everything will open up capacity, places will be packed, and with everywhere full and no masks, those of us who are vulnerable will be forced to stay at home.
Do you stay at home in case you get flu or pneumonia? Have you had the free and highly efficacious vaccine?
CottageGardener · 05/07/2021 14:53

If it's no longer legally required to wear a mask, then surely no-one can insist we do? I'm talking about dentists, drs, trains etc

PotassiumChloride · 05/07/2021 15:02

What’s the difference between staying at home and staying the fuck at home? Asking for a friend.

OneTimeWonder · 05/07/2021 15:06

So apparently masks and social distancing are no longer going to be mandatory after 19 July, but the anticipated end to self-isolation for double-vaccinated has been scrapped at the last minute.

So within a couple of weeks, we can expect the entire country to be self-isolating (based on 6 degrees of separation principle).

Not not freedom after all, just a lot of virus spreading and not treating it like flu but continuing to treat it like life-threatening to everyone.

So it is let it rip, but we will all have to stay at home anyway.

OneTimeWonder · 05/07/2021 15:07

Total mixed messaging and maximum inconvenience to the little person while big business can operate at max capacity and make max money.

OneTimeWonder · 05/07/2021 15:09

Plus still no incentive for those who need a little extra personal benefit to themselves before they get vaccinated.

Blossomtoes · 05/07/2021 15:24

Businesses that have made no money for over a year.

I don’t know, bars and nightclubs are allowed to enforce dress codes so I don’t see commercial premises being in a particularly fragile position if they choose to ask people to wear a mask.

Trains etc could possibly via the Railway Byelaws or Conditions of Carriage (it isnt implemented that way at the moment). Although with all the English Train Operators running under the Emergency Measure Agreements then they'll do as the Government says, so it seems unlikely.

TfL on the other hand although slightly different, even though they are currently running with financial support - they have implemented it via the bylaws and I suspect Mr Kahn may insist that remains)

Xenia · 05/07/2021 16:40

I was the state to legislate so the underground does not force people into masks even if Kahn prefers it.

Legoninjago1 · 05/07/2021 16:47

It's the difference between enduring measures and relishing them, I believe. Wink

I hope very much that Khan finds a way of enforcing mask wearing on the underground. I haven't heard / read the announcement yet though so I've no idea whether that would be possible.
NotSoRealSlimShadyStandingUp · 05/07/2021 19:47

Maybe I am reading or watching something different.

All I got from the press conference was:

Look you lot, we have given you the jabs that will save your lives. The vast majority of young people will carry it, but not be ill with it. They are the ones making up the numbers now. We may vaccinate them, we are thinking about it. However, all you other lot, if you haven't got your life saving jab then that is your problem. Now it is time to get out and if you catch it, it will probably be very mild (if you are jabbed) and you'll just have to suck it up. We are letting it rip through the country now. We have no other choice. We need to let it rip, let people catch it and fight it off with their jabs and get on with life.

Isn't anyome else hearing this?

Xenia · 05/07/2021 19:52

Yes and restrictions go on freedom day.

As for the tube I don't know yet. My daughter says the Evening standard tonight was anticipating masks on the tube would go (in the compulsory sense). She and I don't mind a special carriage for mask wearers to use if they want to separate from others actually for those trains which have separate carriages.,
