So happy if it’s true.

@ineedaholidaynow

I would like them to be around on public transport especially during the winter months.
I will most definitely continue wearing mine on public transport, particularly in the winter. Wearing masks on public transport is common practise in Asia.

I don't mind wearing a mask. I like the anonymity of it. Plus in the winter, it keeps my face warm!

sadperson16 · 01/07/2021 19:56

Oh yeah , a face warming device, brilliant.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 01/07/2021 20:24

Don’t mind either way. If there’s a lot of virus going around I’ll wear it, if there isn’t then I won’t. Not difficult either way tbh.

Honey12346 · 01/07/2021 20:30

@BoredZelda

I think they are grubby things that are more likely to spread the virus through constant touching and pulling on and off.

Another gem which is completely unsupported by the scientific data.

Is there data on the difference in effect when you keep touching your mask and when you don't? I would love to see it
Chatterbox1987 · 01/07/2021 20:37

I guess the interesting thing to think about is if we remove all restrictions, much like America... and let's just imagine no covid stats were reported either.... would we even know that there was a virus anymore based on average daily deaths (currently lower than the 5 year average) and in the grand scheme of things minimal hospitalisations.

I honestly think if were going to relax everything then there needs to be less media talk about it, unless of course hospitalisations and deaths rise to a questionable amount.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 01/07/2021 20:37

The way cases are rising I predict a massive u turn or a very watered down version of what we all have been told.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 01/07/2021 20:39

@Chatterbox1987 I think we very much would judging by the number of schools impacted with kids isolating, businesses closed for deep cleaning and due to staff cases and the impact of parents off with isolating kids.

luckylavender · 01/07/2021 20:47

@TeddingtonTrashbag - this is such a ridiculous thing to say, you may want to consider becoming a Daily Fail journalist - *
And yes to the shops that might initially insist on retaining them -will rapidly change when their only customer are the fussy stingy type (the two traits tend to co-exist by all accounts)

Could do that with child abuse, domestic violence, inequality and racism too. Don’t report it and the problem goes away. Right ?

"Very few people CANNOT wear a face mask.

And they're not the whiney babies I'm referring to."

@CrappyBirthday2Me Ah, I suppose that was aimed at me. Cheers for that.

Whether I would be classed as medically exempt under the rules is borderline, but I suffered reactions severe enough to make me feel ill, so although I am not against wearing masks, for me they present real problems. I feel great sympathy and respect for all the workers who have to wear masks for hours on end, but my system could not take it. I do wear masks when shopping, but limit my time inside shops to 30 mins. Until mask wearing rules end, my chances of getting another job are practically zero, so yes, I hope that mask wearing can be ended soon, although I understand the caution about doing that. I know there are people in much worse situations than me, but I think people should respect each other's views and accept that everybody is different and has their own level of tolerance towards what they can cope with. We all have our own weaknesses and it's been tough for everyone.

It's not just about cases though. They were always fully expected to increase once things began opening up. It's more about serious illness and hospitalisations, and those numbers remain low.

People have definitely lost sight of the original purpose of restrictions, ie to prevent the NHS from becoming overwhelmed.

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 20:57

It’s the absolute definition of mission creep.

frumpety · 01/07/2021 20:58

Just out of interest will people who have been wearing masks but are looking forward to no longer having to wear them, wear them in certain specific circumstances , like visiting the Doctor or hospital if requested to do so ?

Again if all restrictions lifted including isolating pupils...

Chatterbox1987 · 01/07/2021 21:03

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the big difference here being that children getting it isn't that much of a problem whereas of course abuse etc is a problem.

The huge majority of children that catch this will either have no symptoms or cold like symptoms... im sorry but that is not a problem.

luckylavender · 01/07/2021 21:04

@TheVampiresWife - I work from in an office every day in the centre of a south east seaside town. We have strict protocols and many people still wfh and have seen very few infections since the beginning. This last two weeks have been chaos, far far more people self isolating and testing positive than the whole of the pandemic. Nobody has been hospitalised granted, but some are quite unwell (young fit people), but it's really really disruptive & the weather is good currently.

SusannahSophia · 01/07/2021 21:55

I've just started another thread comparing today's figures to those of 29 January when confirmed cases were very similar. Then, there were 28680 cases, 36931 patients in hospital and 1239 deaths. Compare that to today - 27989 cases, 1795 patients in hospital and 22 deaths.

@TheVampiresWife 29th January was when cases were falling due to lockdown and hospitalisations lag cases and deaths lag hospitalisations. You are by no means comparing like for like, you do realise that? You should be looking at September and October when cases started increasing. Obviously the vaccination programme has had a great effect but not quite as big as you’re suggesting.

AloneInTheRoom · 01/07/2021 22:00

And when you get your life back I will lose mine....another blood cancer patient here - one that is sick and tired of reading about how we should just get on with it now we have been vaccinated. I've had both my jabs but blood tests show I have had zero response to them. So you can fuck off with your judgemental shit about those of us who will really, REALLY need masks if we go outside.

AloneInTheRoom · 01/07/2021 22:02

@MrsExpo

I have mixed feelings about this news. One the one hand, I hate wearing a mask in shops (but I've got used to it). On the other, cases are rising again, even if that's not being mirrored in hospitalisations, so we should all be doing our bit to control it.

Or, do we just have to accept that this bloody disease is here to stay and we've just got to learn to live with it and get on with our lives.

Learn to live with it? Or be prepared to die from it? Because that's the likelihood for a lot of CEV people for whom the vaccine hasn't worked

Yes, I do realise it's not exactly like for like. I said as much.

The vaccination programme has had a huge effect. Up to 96% of hospitalisations are prevented in the doubly vaccinated. The figures I used may be a little skewed (it wasn't a scientific comparison, just an observation) but they're a lot more encouraging than you're suggesting.

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 22:10

I'm clinically vulnerable. There were lots of common ailments that could have proved fatal for me long before Covid (and oddly nobody insisted on everyone wearing masks to protect people like me then).

I'm doubly vaccinated and as safe as I'm ever going to be. I say, live with it. I certainly wouldn't expect others to live with restrictions (even fairly minor things like masks) indefinitely in order to protect me.

Sorry, I hadn't seen this when I posted my response to your other post.

Anyone judging others for their mask wearing (or not, in the case of exempt people) is deeply unpleasant and unhelpful. It's fine to say you hate masks and can't wait for the day you can abandon them forever. Not so fine to name-call and judge others who may feel more comfortable keeping them.

SirSamuelVimes · 01/07/2021 22:15

But that is going to have to happen at some point. There is a new disease which we cannot make everyone safe from. The human race has always been vulnerable to disease, this is nothing new. We have to act at population level - what is the best course of action for the vast majority, what will cause the least damage to the population. Learning to live with Covid has to mean accepting people will die from it. Zero Covid is impossible - look at Australia, even with their incredibly strict border controls they are going back into regional lockdowns.

The scientific research will continue, vaccines will improve, treatment options will improve and fewer and fewer people will die from it. But in the short term, yes, some people will die. Some people will be very ill for a short time, some people will suffer longer term problems. There is no way to avoid that - people breathing out through a t shirt wrapped around their face isn't going to make a difference.

You may well be right - but I was referring to the judgement and nastiness towards those of us that still need to protect ourselves. Some of the posters on here are complete arses and give zero thought as to WHY some people will NEED to carry on wearing masks.

So when are we going to talk about nosocomial infections.

From the day before they "cancelled" Christmas.
