Absolute rubbish TheVampires

The ship might have sailed for elimination (thanks to countries like the UK) but it most definitely has not for suppress and contain. It actually can't, because at some point it will become impossible (again, deja vu) not to. Deja vu. Deja vu. (In the UK).

Watapalava · 28/06/2021 22:37

Tealights

There are 12.7 Million people under age 18 in UK

29 kids under 18 have died with covid including CEV

perspective is needed

Tinysalmonswimminginastream · 28/06/2021 22:37

If they lift restrictions they are also going to have to change the close contact isolation rules as well. Otherwise everyone is just going to be isolating all of the time!

TheVampiresWife · 28/06/2021 22:46

Ah well the hope and positivity of this thread was lovely while it lasted Confused

Tealightsandd · 28/06/2021 22:47

It's really quite rude and insulting Watapalava to dismiss the concerns from parents of CEV and CV children.

Like pp have pointed out, vulnerable children have been shielding for most of the past year.

The risk to children is low, yes, but it's worth going the extra mile when it comes to vulnerable children - ensuring we've done all we can to protect them, and (importantly) giving peace of mind to their parents. They should be prioritised for vaccination.

And again. It's not just about death. There's also the risk of Long Covid.

I agree, really quite a nasty tone to some of these posts.

@Watapalava

Same - Hardly any cev kids have died in whole uk

As for hospitalisations, are people ignoring the fact we are vaccinating the hell out of the country?! It’s unbeliveable - Citing such high cases even as protection in going up and up? Don’t forget not all people in hospital are seriously ill

The fact overall hospitalisations has hardly risen seems to have gone unnoticed - 200 may be admitted per day but they must be in and out as the number in hospital has hardly changed

There as re approx 1500 people with covid in uk hospitals and there are 2000 hospitals!

Given 200 are going in per day they must be in for only a day or so and leaving otherwise numbers would be huge and rising massively and they are not in any way

Gone are the days of people hogging icu beds

This is exactly what's happening. The profile of people going into hospital is very different now from what it was pre-vaccines and the length of hospital stays is much shorter.

The media is doing a poor job of describing the context of hospitalisations and continue to report only the numbers of those going into hospital, not those leaving just a few days later.

I hope so, I really do. Many businesses won’t survive much longer.

That said, I doubt anyone who works in - or uses - any type of health and social care service will be burning their masks anytime soon….

I can’t see many businesses surviving in a situation with rising cases being left unchecked and people staying away out of fear because social distancing measures have been removed and places feel unsafe. Before anyone sneers, yes it will happen, you can not expect an instant return to 2019 after the trauma of a pandemic.
Northernlurker · 28/06/2021 23:25

Nobody knows what the outcome of long Covid will be. It's not inevitably leading to years of ill health. What we are seeing in the ground is a big need for pulmonary rehab and physio and ot. Which is unsurprising after months of isolation and limited going outdoors. The biggest need actually seems to be for psychological support. Very few patients appear to need ongoing respiratory clinic support.

Northernlurker · 28/06/2021 23:26

And yes in hospitals it's a small number of patients and decent turnover. So far so good. I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two weeks ago.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/06/2021 23:44

Tomorrow approx 1,500 people in the U.K. will die.

About a dozen will die with Covid.

Life has been on hold for too long - roll on the 19th

SoSadAboutMyDad · 29/06/2021 00:04

@Bitofachinwag

So will travel restrictions go too?
What country will bloody well want us?? When we are up to 10s of 1000s of infections a day?

I and many other people will no longer be frequenting business when we have no masks and thousands of new infections a day! No thanks! So it won’t help businesses at all.
RoseRedRoseBlue · 29/06/2021 00:48

For me, ‘Freedom Day’ means a return to ALL things as they were pre-Covid. This includes international travel, not having to isolate, not having to be tested at the drop of a hat, GP’s letting people into the surgery and so forth. I just can’t see all this changing in 3 weeks time. At best, we will be offered a watered down version of what used to be and told to be grateful 😐.

Sadly whilst we’re kidding ourselves with Freedom day and sky high infection rates no other country is going to let us in. If people think we can have high levels of virus and open international travel they are utterly misguided.
NannyAndJohn · 29/06/2021 04:13

This "freedom day" is going to be catastrophic for small businesses.

In excess of 100000 cases a day means that so many staff will have to isolate, leading to temporary closures and potential profits going down the drain.

Not very fun for the customers either, having their favourite restaurants and independent shops constantly closing and re-opening.

luckylavender · 29/06/2021 06:23

@RoseRedRoseBlue - no chance. International travel relies on other countries for one thing & we're not regarded as safe. Also not all countries have good levels of vaccinations.

99victoria · 29/06/2021 06:45

Well, we're off to Greece at the weekend - they're still happy to have us :)

Yet the irony is that all children (who are themselves vulnerable because they're kids!) have not been protected at all from the harms of repeated lockdowns and school closures. Their interests and welfare have been at the bottom of the pile throughout - the ramifications of that will be extremely severe and felt for years, individually and across the country.

I felt hopeful yesterday too. I'm holding on to that. Burn the masks!

ineedaholidaynow · 29/06/2021 07:19

How do people see Israel? If they had Freedom Day and now have to reintroduce masks, do you not think that might happen here. With their vaccination record you would think they wouldn’t need that, but they obviously think they do.

Seeing how busy pubs are suggests that you're quite wrong. Many people have avoided doing things like high street shopping/going to the cinema etc because they've felt so uncomfortable wearing masks for hours to do so. Once they're gone, people will return to shops/cinemas/museums etc in their droves, I think.

And there's nothing stopping you wearing one if you want to!

MarshaBradyo · 29/06/2021 07:41

You’re not going to go into any shops / restaurants / not go inside except home?

Baileysforchristmas · 29/06/2021 07:50

Well it’s not putting people off in London already, many not wearing masks anymore, fan zones set up for the football and Wimbledon, many pop up bars along the Southbank, London will be heaving tonight, a lot of people won’t be wearing masks.
