I think the scientists chose a bad day for their Mass Infection press conference. I’m watching the bbc news and the first 15 minutes were football and now they are talking covid but haven’t mentioned the press conference or letter in the Lancet. I thought it would at least warrant a mention.

Did you watch it? Not many did by press conference do you mean press were in attendance or watching online too
Footballcominghome · 08/07/2021 15:01

I watched it, press conference is what they called it, possibly a bit optimistically.

Cornettoninja · 08/07/2021 16:05

I think it’s a bit early to define long covid symptoms, not least because (at least in the UK) it’s not like we’ve had much capacity for investigation of it.

There has certainly been long term damage linked to covid infections, I found a recent report that it has been linked to longer term changes in the blood very interesting and certainly seems to fit a lot of what some people are reporting. It’s also not the first time that it’s been raised that covid is primarily a disease of the blood with respiratory complications.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 08/07/2021 16:13

I’m going to bury my head in the sand and think this has peaked at 30,000/day.

wintertravel1980 · 08/07/2021 16:30

The cases might be peaking in whole of North West.

North East, however, is still on the way up.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 08/07/2021 16:36

@wintertravel1980

North East, however, is still on the way up.

So if the North West peaks at approx 1/3 of winter, isn’t the overall going to peak nationally at 1/3? I’m clutching.
Itsprobablynotcominghome · 08/07/2021 16:37

Just realised I was extrapolating Bolton’s winter peak. Jeez, NE is already higher than their winter peak.

Ignore me.

wintertravel1980 · 08/07/2021 16:59

Yes, unfortunately, North East has been predicted to have the highest number of cases this time round. From the Warwick document:

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/993358/s1288_Warwick_RoadMap_Step_4.pdf

The predicted scale of the third wave for all three measures is a function of historical cases, vaccine uptake, vaccine efficacy and the competitive advantage inferred for B.1.617.2 (Fig. 1). All regions except London are predicted to have large numbers of infections in the third wave (equivalent or more than in wave 2 for both the default and cautious efficacy assumptions, Fig. 18 top left), with the North East and Yorkshire suffering the highest burden.

Not technically a stat, but NDN (double-vaccinated and a teacher) was blue-lighted to hosp yesterday.

JanFebAnyMonth · 08/07/2021 18:31

There were journalists asking questions and there’s a Guardian article on it, don’t know if it’s reached anywhere else though.

In other news, the govt is finally “looking at” ventilation in schools:

JanFebAnyMonth · 08/07/2021 18:35

Emergency summit reported on on inews.com, Daily Express (!) and a few other specialist places, Google informs me.

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2021 19:44

Is it possible they didn't think this one through??

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2021 19:45

Hope our NDN will be OK pussycat Sad

Piggywaspushed · 08/07/2021 19:45

Your, not our!!

pussycatlickinglollyices · 08/07/2021 20:00

thanks Piggy mrs NDN called around to collect some stuff - he's on o2 at the mo and they're monitoring him.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 08/07/2021 20:02

that sounds odd - she didn't call at mine but at his, they have separate houses. 😳

PerditaNitt · 08/07/2021 20:09

Is there any reason why daily vaccinations have dropped over the last week or so (tracking % progress has been keeping me positive over the last few months!). News reports are conflicting - I saw something about shortfalls of Pfizer/moderna (which now seems to be debunked), and something about hesitancy from the young (which isn’t consistent with overall low rates of vaccine hesitancy in the uk).

MRex · 08/07/2021 20:27

Odd, and interesting, that the Covid-Zoe estimated fault cases of 33,719 is almost exactly the number of today's cases 32,551. Zoe is usually bigger numbers on the upswing, so fingers crossed we are within sight of the levelling. If those hooting cars and singing that football has come home at 4.15am last night are a premature guide, football gatherings will likely bring more increases for the next two weeks (Sat + 5 and then +5 more for household members), but after that perhaps.

MRex · 08/07/2021 20:36

@PerditaNitt - we haven't quite run out of people to vaccinate, but it's getting closer as fast bookers even at 18 largely got jabbed. Those of all ages but especially young who needed the GP prompt / persuade may be slower to roll through, plus some vaccination sites may be closing ready for 19th. There will be a long trickle, but it won't be big numbers. The only 3 people I like who weren't jabbed with their cohort; two are going in the next few weeks but only one set up the appointment (hesitant cleaner has decided to go but still gaining courage), and the third is pregnant waiting until later in the year. If you'd said in November a target of 85% adults vaccinated, I would have said that was ambitious to the point of unachievable. As much as we'd all like to see 90%+ for herd safety, a proportion will wait and a proportion will never get it.

sirfredfredgeorge · 08/07/2021 20:46

Vaccine needs Johnson&Johnson (so just 1 dose) and it needs buses or other things that don't take queuing or time & effort to find the right place. It's running out of people who are eager, and now it needs to go through the people who are indifferent but willing if it's convenient.

I'm not sure we're going to get much of that though, it'll just be the stick (you must be vaccinated or you can't do anything) and incessant badgering from GP's.

Whichjab · 08/07/2021 20:57

Near me they are calling people to be jabbed. Have vaccines but no arms. As the Pfizer is already approved elsewhere why can't they offer it to the Under 12 that want it?

cantkeepawayforever · 08/07/2021 20:59

If they have supplies, they should do 12 - 17 year olds. It would make all the difference to schools in September.

EasterIssland · 08/07/2021 20:59

Do you mean over 12s? As it’s not approved for under
Whichjab · 08/07/2021 20:59

Apologies over 12
