I think there should be a distinction: physical affects of LC are real, measurable and some will never subside. MH issues can be reduced in flight or after. They do not -in most cases- change you physically.

Another issue is that we don't know really. But we are ready throw out kids under the bus. To me that makes no sense. Especially when there is a vaccine (now only 1, but sure more will follow) that is proven to be effective in kids and is available.

I fully agree that it is a complex issue. And if we were mandating the minimum viable approach to keeping society safe (you know, the usual: masks, sd, ventilation,...) than I would be more inclined to agree that there is a tradeoff point that we need to find. But that is not what is happening.

TheSunIsStillShining · 07/07/2021 13:33

Just read this:

"Professor Sir John Bell
“The second thing is, our immune responses seem to get better over time. After you’ve had two vaccines, when you pop back up six months later, your immune system has developed the response to the virus to an even more mature state."

Did anyone ever come across a study that actually shows this? I might have missed it of course, but it seems to be quite a wild allegation imo. So far all I can recall reading is that immunity wains and boosters will be needed. But studies are/will be ongoing as time passes by.

TheSunIsStillShining · 07/07/2021 13:46

Another question: has anyone got a proper antibody test to check how well their body responded to a vaccine? Not as part of a trial, but as an individual.
I want to get one and hope that someone has a good suggestion. Yes, I can google, but I'm old fashioned: I like recommendations :)

What vaccine is safe and effective in under 12's ?

wintertravel1980 · 07/07/2021 15:13
  1. Pfizer is approved for over 12's, not under 12s.
  2. There are still intensive debates about side effects and risk of myocarditis in the US and there are many scientists and healthcare professionals criticising the CDC data.

When we look at the population level, it may be true that risks of Covid outweighs risks of myocarditis. However, kids impacted by potential side effects are not those who are at risk of Covid. Myocarditis occurrence is the highest among fit and healthy boys with no undelying conditions. The probability of them having a severe case of Covid is extremely low. If I had been a mother of a teenage boy (with no health history), I am not sure I would have encouraged him to get vaccinated with both doses (especially if they are only 3 weeks apart, as recommended in the US).

Here is one of the alternative views on the topic:

Data query here, more than anything else.
Think it's fairly common knowledge that I'm Cornwall based - our cases went up like a rocket on the back of G7 (and seriously, nothing to do with G7 my lily white behind)
How can it be that we aren't restricted, we are very much open for tourism, the usual suspects in the local chip-paper are blaming "emmets" for super-spreading, and yet our numbers have stopped climbing on that steep trajectory?
I'm just not understanding how that might be possible?

@MrsRussell I get the impression that it "burns through" any available groups of people (young/low vaccination), but is probably contained once it hits a more vaccinated population, or if the infected people correctly self-isolate.

Asking burst school bubbles to PCR test in a surge-testing sort of way is one method of reducing the spread in the available groups.

I expect we'll have little flare-up pockets like this for a quite a while as Covid hits various schools/low-vaccinated groups.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 07/07/2021 16:34

2144 in hospital in England.

That’s a 508 increase since Saturday. 31%.

This is not going well.

amicissimma · 07/07/2021 17:34

@GenitaliaNotGender, this article in Nature is encouraging. It's early days and a small study, but hopeful.

sirfredfredgeorge · 07/07/2021 17:41

I think it's very likely that quite a lot of that case increase wasn't real, but cases related to the G7 was applied to the area when the individuals weren't really there - I imagine foreign people testing positive with that as their address in the country. Rather than actually being locals. Hence the trajectory didn't follow.

I also expect a very high proportion of the cases were caught, and hence any locals who were did isolate.

But that would all be a guess.

sirfredfredgeorge · 07/07/2021 18:23

4 billion up until march - this is not a good use of money.

[quote Piggywaspushed]Did anyone else see this? My gob is rather smacked:

Well that's one way of getting the number of cases down Hmm

Tinysalmonswimminginastream · 07/07/2021 18:44

If you look at the numbers, the infection number growth rate is actually going down slightly (am trying to be optimistic!)

Piggywaspushed · 07/07/2021 18:47

Indeed titchy! My 17 year old just figured that out...

olivethegreat · 07/07/2021 19:21

Just picking up on the John Bell comments, he sounded like he had been looking at data and it was showing that 6 months after vaccination the immune system was more primed than earlier. Which is excellent news. He said he as optimistic and his glass was 3/4 full.

Does anyone know why the PHE Investigation of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern: technical briefings wasn't released last week? They are usually published on a Friday.

wintertravel1980 · 07/07/2021 19:50

lonelyplanet

They switched to bi-weekly publications because with Delta becoming dominant weekly analysis no longer produced significant new information:

Also reported in the Telegraph here

Coronavirus admissions to hospitals in England have surged by 70 per cent in a week, new NHS data shows.

A total of 416 people were admitted with Covid-19 on July 5, the highest daily total since March 15.

Meanwhile, Wales and Northern Ireland saw just six admissions each on the same date.

The figure covers all patients admitted in the previous 24 hours who were known to have Covid-19, as well as any patients diagnosed in hospital with the virus.

The increase comes as leaked emails from Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust said staff were dealing with an “unprecedented” situation as its two Covid wards were filled to capacity - forcing the hospital to cancel already-delayed cancer surgeries.

In Scotland, ‘code black’ status has been declared at three hospitals - Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin and Inverness’s Raigmore Hospital - amid mounting pressures from Covid, meaning all non-urgent elective surgery will be postponed.
