However, seeing as Canada are mixing vaccines, there must be some data coming out on immune responses which might help before the final booster decision is made.

The WHO had a press conference today. They did say that giving Pfizer after 1 dose AZ was fine.

However, ultimately they did not recommend mixing vaccines yet, but this is something they hope will happen in the future.

(I hope I heard it right Grin).

Lemonmelonsun · 30/06/2021 23:22

Can anyone tell me why Chris whitty wants to get people to mix now? Before winter?

EasterIssland · 30/06/2021 23:25

@MRex

Bit of a change to CV rules; boosters for anyone who gets a flu jab (presumably not kids) www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57667987:

"More than 30 million of the most vulnerable should receive a third dose, vaccine experts are advising.

They will include all adults aged 50 and over, and anyone younger who qualifies for a flu jab."

Wonder whether it’ll be available privately for those of us that wont get the flu jab Or whether they’ll end up vaccinating everyone again if covid numbers go up higher than expected

Almost 2000 cases connected to the England Scotland match, by Public Health Scotland.
Scotland has surpassed itself again today, with 3887 positive cases. Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday we'd passed our peak..I don't think so.

When was Scotland kicked out of the euro? Was it last weekend ? Wonder whether numbers will start going down now that they are not anymore in the competition

Heard the news whilst driving how many of those Scottish that are affected had been in London without tickets for the match despite it was recommended not to travel unless they had a ticket.

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/06/2021 23:43

Think the BBC article had an estimate of that number.

Yes @Lemonmelonsun, he and other scientists are saying ‘let’s at least give it a go now’ so the peak doesn’t coincide with flu (expected to be worse than usual as little immunity from last winter) and other seasonal viruses.

Eccle80 · 30/06/2021 23:44

@Wakeupin2022 thanks that’s good to know.

ThereIsAGreenHillFarAway · 01/07/2021 00:13

@Whichjab - I've read that having a third AZ vaccination is not recommended, has there been any developments on this?

Yes, read the same several times on other threads but strangely the poster(s) always go quiet when asked for source data.

Fferny1 · 01/07/2021 00:45

Just as an update because I'm not sure where else to put it. Plus it seems ironic that we are talking about opening up when other parts of the world are closing to us.
Asian countries have issued more travel restrictions on UK flights. No UK flights to HK from tomorrow are allowed to land. No UK flights to Vietnam and No UK people allowed into Singapore unless they have permanent residency.

Reastie · 01/07/2021 05:47

I heard previously that vaccines can’t be combined because of the different ways they work. Does anyone have any data about safety and effectiveness of mixing vaccines?

MRex · 01/07/2021 06:41

@Reastie

I don't know where you're getting that information from. The Com Cov trial has shown mixing vaccines to be safe and effective: www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01359-3 They used a 4 week interval, which we know from other trials will have reduced AZ effectiveness because it needs longer for immunity to build, but overall efficacy was very good. They highlight the risk of more side effects; this could be due to the stronger immune response or just because there's twice the risk of a reaction to the individual vaccine. Spain had similar trials showing the safety of mixing vaccines.
Whichjab · 01/07/2021 07:10
@Eccle80 I keep reading various Drs on Twitter saying follow AZ with X to give you more antibodies or get an extra shot of X. It just feels like there’s no plan, just making it up as they go along, contradicting original manufacturers advice and offering vague assurances.

I don’t want to lose my place in society over this but I’m just confused as to what’s best to do and it seems those in the know as just as confused as I am. 😢
I do apologise as maybe going away from data, but have you seen anything that recommends giving giving AZ after Pfizer? I saw on the
BBC, someone from Oxford saying that having a other jab after AZ increases protection, is that because AZ isn't as good as we've been let on. There are less scientific studies on AZ than Pfizer.

Notsowise · 01/07/2021 07:23

@JanFebAnyMonth @Lemonmelonsun

‘Let’s at least give it a go now’ - he did not say that. If you are going to quote scientists then get it right.

He said you eventually reach a point where we have done all we reasonably can and we have to live with this and accept some people will still get very ill and die.

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 07:33

Not so, I didn't say, let's give it a go now, 🤣.

So he wants to ease the problems before winter because he definitely said something about being very concerned about winter

Whatever9999 · 01/07/2021 07:38
vaccine map now on the dashboard

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/interactive-map/vaccinations
Ooh I like that map, it shows why we've been consistently suppressed in the area I live (bar 3 days in the last 2 months), 88.5% adults with 1 dose and 67.9% with both.
*we are an area with a higher than average % of elderly residents, which is probably why our vaccination numbers are so high

Notsowise · 01/07/2021 07:39

@Lemonmelonsun the other poster was saying CW and others are saying “let’s at least give it a go now” but he was actually much more positive.

He said winter will be harder which it will be, but no where near as bad as last year so overall really positive.

Whatever9999 · 01/07/2021 07:40

Oh and I don't actually know any adult in the area who hasn't either already had their first jab or got it booked within the next couple weeks. As well as the bigger centres our local gp has been whizzing through them

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 07:47

Yes but you included me (bizzarely) in your @ and didn't distinguish at all who said what then Berated "us".
If you are going to tell a poster off please be clear.

Lemonmelonsun · 01/07/2021 07:49

If you Google the words "Chris whitty and winter" I think you will find he says the NHS needs to brace for a very difficult winter.

Yes and the public would not react well to a strong response to flu in winter

The difference is that because of our vaccine rollout, case numbers are irrelevant now to us. Whereas other counties vaccine rollout are not as strong as ours so higher cases will lead to higher deaths and hospitalisations in those countries.

I suspect once their vaccine rollout is at an advanced stage they will then happily let us back in.

@Lemonmelonsun

Isn't his concerned for winter due to other illnesses in children due to their lack of exposure over the last 2 years? Not corona related at all. Restrictions won't help either as it will just kick that problem down the road for the year after.
Notsowise · 01/07/2021 08:19

@Lemonmelonsun sorry I was @ you so you’d see it and know it’s much more positive news (if you read his full quote in The Times and not the gloomy one from the DM)!

@MarshaBradyo exactly - he said the public would not accept a flu lockdown!

MarshaBradyo · 01/07/2021 09:00

The way I see Whitty’s comments is yes winter will have heightened flu so go ahead with summer lifting, not because we’ll lockdown again but so we won’t.

Use flu vaccine and booster too

It’s going to be full on winter but he thinks we can get through it with above.

I’m ok with that and hope it sticks. I definitely prefer listening to him though over some other takes.

EasterIssland · 01/07/2021 10:33

We were speaking about this ii think here

"Some people, including those pushing an anti-vaccine agenda online, have been claiming a large proportion of those dying with the Delta variant of coronavirus had been vaccinated.
The latest Public Health England (PHE) figures show there were 92,029 confirmed Delta cases between 1 February and 22 June.
Of these, 58% were in completely unvaccinated people and only 8% were fully vaccinated.
Of the 117 people who died with the Delta variant, first identified in India, 50 (43%) had been fully vaccinated.
And on 13 June, a Daily Mail headline claimed the proportion of those dying who had been fully vaccinated had "scared" Prime Minister Boris Johnson into delaying the 21 June easing of restrictions, describing it as a "blow".
But what these figures actually show is less alarming.
The 43% figure relates to deaths only - so it misses all the vaccinated people who were exposed to Covid but did not catch it, or caught the virus but did not become very ill."
