Is anyone else reassured by the death rates??

Is it just me?

I feel so reassured about the fact that the death rates are staying so low.

Each death is obviously a tragedy, I’m not dismissing that, but the fact that 1000’s of lives aren’t being lost a day anymore is such a blessing for many families.

Cases are going up, as was always going to happen, but the death rate staying so low each day is such a relief.

I’m relieved the vaccines must be working and I’m so happy for the all the the families in society who are no longer being ripped apart by losing their loved ones to such a horrible virus.

Maybe it’s because the sun is shining very beautifully where I am, but I’m feeling very positive this morning Smile

Thanks @BigWoollyJumpers

helpmebeanadult · 22/06/2021 13:28

@QwertyGirly that would be really useful.

carolinesbaby · 22/06/2021 13:29

@Qwertygirl

Could we compare against the point in the last wave when rates were similar, but nobody had been vaccinated?
I'm no scientist and I don't claim to be good with data. Just an idea.

Here it is from where I worked it out for another post

Cases 2 weeks ago were around 6000, the last time we had those numbers at the start of 2nd peak was 29th September. 2 weeks after that there was nearly 6000 in hospital and 70+ daily deaths.

2 weeks on from the same numbers and we have 1300 in hospital and a weekly average of 10 deaths.

Sittingonabench · 22/06/2021 13:35

Yes 😃 very optimistic so far. My understanding of the aim of this and evidence of vaccines working are that cases are relatively high (given opening up and fewer restrictions) but hospitalisation sand deaths remain low. This appears to be what is happening taking into account we are only part way through the vaccination programme so seems very positive! The hospitalisation ideally will be lower with boosters and the virus running its course so long as we don’t take the foot off the gas.

MarshaBradyo · 22/06/2021 13:38

@BarbarianMum

Long COVID data is difficult at present because there is no agreed upon definition (it is used as a catch all for everything from permanent lung damage to permanent loss of smell to ongoing fatigue, or nerve damage, or digestive problems etc or a combination of any of the above) or duration (symptoms continuing beyond 5 weeks? 10? 12?
Yes it sounds messy but we should be able to compare a more fixed set pre and post vaccination

Are people losing taste and smell / lung damage etc at the same rate

How do they get the pre vaccination figures? Is an ONS study

It can be repeated and we’d get data on it

Villanelle17 · 22/06/2021 13:41

Yes! Think it's just something we're going to live with now, like flu. Annual boosters for certain people. Also, I remember reading a few weeks back that by October they hope to have medicines that reduce the severity of covid if people catch it.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 13:55

I also find it quite reassuring that the number of people in hospital, whilst increasing is increasing at a much slower rate.

I know admissions have been increasing, but I think people in hospital with covid is a better metric for how the NHS is coping as many admissions are in, treated and out very quickly (from the head of the NHS who's name escapes me, sorry)

There are 325 more people in hospital now, than there was at the beginning of the month. During the last wave it was raising by that in a day.

strangeshapedpotato · 22/06/2021 13:56

Reassured? Nope.

March 2020 - daily deaths only get out of the teens a week before lockdown.

Current infection levels are nowhere near what it's believed we had back then.

I'm reassured by the data coming out of Bolton and Blackburn that show infections there haven't continued to grow exponentially and may this fantastic effort by the local health teams be repeated across the country!

Nope that was just Johnson after his meds.
The covid cures will be around about the same time as the bridge to Ireland, and pocket nuclear fusion generators.

Children aren't vaccinated, @MarshaBradyo.

If there's anyone I want to protect from Long Covid it's our children.

herecomesthsun · 22/06/2021 14:13

We already have medicines that effectively help to reduce the severity of covid (but could do with more therapeutic strategies)

My concern is that when half the country reaches Bolton levels at the same time there won't be enough resources (surge testing and vaccination etc) to mitigate the spread.

They don't have Delta
Yet

Yes they do. Delta currently accounts for about 84l% of cases in Finland and they are doing just fine. With the exception of asking you to wear a mask when in a place with lots of other people, get vaccinated when it is offered and download the track and trace app, all other restrictions are over. Done with.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 14:17

84% not 841%, sorry, new keyboard.

MarshaBradyo · 22/06/2021 14:17

If there's anyone I want to protect from Long Covid it's our children.

The ethical considerations and comparative risks are being considered by JCVI if the risk is high then it tips in favour of vaccinating.

The data of Long Covid for children should be in there

BeachSunsets · 22/06/2021 14:18

Yes it’s very good that the numbers have heavily reduced.

Nice hopefully there soon too. Do you know the proportion vaccinated?
LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 14:22

@MarshaBradyo
55.8% at one dose and 15.4% have had 2 doses. And their hospitalisations are falling too.

duckme · 22/06/2021 14:29

I was. And then they delayed 'freedom day' anyway.

Thanks for info.

That’s quite low considering

I’m glad things are looking pretty good

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 14:36

@strangeshapedpotato
No need to be so bloody rude.

I am not comparing us to them at all. It was stated that no other European countries have the delta variant and I was just illustrating that this is wrong. At no point did I compare us to them!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 14:38

Also, I would love to know at what point during the last 16 months did "moron" suddenly become an acceptable word to use. It has been previously banned on this site but on this board I see it slung around all the time.
