Is anyone else reassured by the death rates??

Is it just me?

I feel so reassured about the fact that the death rates are staying so low.

Each death is obviously a tragedy, I’m not dismissing that, but the fact that 1000’s of lives aren’t being lost a day anymore is such a blessing for many families.

Cases are going up, as was always going to happen, but the death rate staying so low each day is such a relief.

I’m relieved the vaccines must be working and I’m so happy for the all the the families in society who are no longer being ripped apart by losing their loved ones to such a horrible virus.

Maybe it’s because the sun is shining very beautifully where I am, but I’m feeling very positive this morning Smile

You really have no idea what I was doing, I was answering a question. Simple. If you read more into it then that says more about you than it does about me.

Poorlykitten · 22/06/2021 14:55

I think the Delta variant is in many places, just not as widespread. Yet.

Poorlykitten · 22/06/2021 14:57

The delta variant has been shown to be highly transmissible and has been identified in more than 80 countries and 41 U.S. states. The CDC has added the strain to its lists of “variants of concern.”

Thank you @Delatron

Delatron · 22/06/2021 15:05

Delta!

sotiredofthislonelylife · 22/06/2021 15:29
@poorly kitten - where do you find numbers for hospitals? I'd be interested to see how cases are translating into hospital numbers locally rather than the overall hospital number.
If you go onto the gov COVID site, you can see all the relevant information on the entire country, and also you can input your postcode, and you will get data on positive tests, hospital admissions, deaths and vaccination numbers for your specific area.

Balls, 27 today ☹️ Let’s hope it’s just a one off and they’re lower again tomorrow 🤞

bodenbeaut · 22/06/2021 16:37

How many deaths were we having when we last locked down??

LivinLaVidaLoki · 22/06/2021 16:41

@bodenbeaut when lockdown came into effect on 5th November there were 378 deaths.

Cafeaulait27 · 22/06/2021 16:46

@LivinLaVidaLoki wow

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 22/06/2021 16:52

The percentage increase might not be a worry when numbers are low, but enduring increase means that they do not remain low.

We still have time not to blow it, and choke off this rise. But if we don't, and we keep seeing increase at the rate of the last couple of weeks, then the numbers will take off (inherent in exponential growth). If we miss this window of opportunity, it could yet go very pearshaped.

If you look at stats by "date of death" the trend is still flat. Today's figures obviously swept up a few deaths from the last week. So far in the last week only one day was somewhat higher at 17, all other days around 10.

Thanks for this. I was hoping someone would post this info

itsgettingwierd · 22/06/2021 17:12

I can't work out the statistics!

The data dashboard shows cases and hospitalisations have increased at same percentage and deaths at a higher percentage. But I think this is skewed due to the very low starting point.

Death rate is currently 0.1/100k. Is that higher or lower than at the peak?

Everything does look to be better controlled with regards how fast a rise in cases and hospitalisations rose in the second peak (its growing but seems slower?)

So I'm quietly confident but actually I'm a little wary of getting to excited in case it changes. I'm really struggling with the idea of going backwards when we believed vaccines were the way out.

Delatron · 22/06/2021 17:23

I wonder when it would be useful to go to weekly deaths? In the peak it was so horrific I guess it needed to be reported. But it seems at the moment some days are very low then they play catch up and add a few in one day and everyone freaks out.

Weekly would be more helpful at this stage I feel.

Cafeaulait27 · 22/06/2021 17:49

@Delatron I agree!

Yesterday 5 deaths, today 27, its hard to draw much from such small numbers really

FFS, I see the usual posters are on here extinguishing any flicker of optimism.

To a certain extent the low deaths at the moment are obviously a relief. But a 0-9 year old and a 30-40 year old were in the death stats today and they are creeping up slowly (and always at least 2 weeks after the rise in cases, so always lagging). I would still prefer we went for zero covid and didn't accept any kind of rate as acceptable. I know it's still a low risk for most people, especially the vaccinated, but it's still distressing to hear that as 'living with it'.

duffeldaisy · 22/06/2021 18:31

If you look at some of the stats people who publish on Twitter each day, they give the cases/deaths/vaccines in relation to what the figures were exactly a week ago (so you're not comparing a Tuesday with a Sunday), and also have running 'average' totals, which are a bit more reassuring as they balance out the blip days, and give a more measured idea of where things are going.

Lawrence Gilder is one, and Travelling Tabby is another.

Delatron · 22/06/2021 18:47

Thanks @duffeldaisy I’ll take a look as I think those figures are more helpful.
