Italy - mandatory quarantine

DS was planning to go next week to visit a friend.

He had both vaccines ages ago.

It's so shit, but what can he do?

He's just left Uni.

I dont think anyone should be travelling abroad at all at the moment barring specific, crucial circumstances.

Tulipomania · 18/06/2021 18:39

We'll have to agree to differ on that.

what's the point of vaccines otherwise?

Vaccines are to reduce the risk to vulnerable people. They reduce transmission and reduce symptoms.

The world is not, as a whole, vaccinated enough that all countries can relax their measures.

There is still a real risk that covid (especially the delta variant) can be transmitted to a country/area that does not yet have enough of its vulnerable vaccinated.

If a country decides that, as an interim, people can come in as long as they quarantine and test, then surely that's a fairly reasonable compromise?

No travel is the ideal at the moment. Restrictions when travel takes place should be accepted or the person choose not to travel if they do not agree with the restrictions.

Jocasta2018 · 18/06/2021 18:57

If Italy wants visitors from the UK to quarantine for 5 days then your son will have to follow the rules!
Given the pesky Delta variant, I'm surprised they're allowing any UK travellers in...

Tulipomania · 18/06/2021 19:38

Sadly he can't afford to pay to quarantine for 6 nights. So he's going to have to cancel the trip I think.

We warned him the rules might change at the last minute - and he only booked a ticket 2 days ago - but it still sucks.

Thankfully for Italians they’ve made the right decision, hopefully the rest of Europe will follow suit to prevent a massive spike in Delta in their countries. Bad luck for your DS, he’ll be able to go at some stage in the future.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/06/2021 20:33

How come he has had both jabs if he has just left uni?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/06/2021 22:15

That's millennials for you.

aibusux2u · 18/06/2021 22:22

Where would he have to quarantine? I read about the 5 day quarantine rule but there is no info on the details of where and how.

Justa47 · 18/06/2021 22:25

@Tulipomania

Blame BOJo for wanting to go to India and letting delta in and all the people relaxing the protocols/not having vaccines and hence giving delta legs

Justa47 · 18/06/2021 22:26

@Tulipomania

Can he get a refund?

OPS’s son is unlikely to be a millennial if he’s just left uni.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/06/2021 22:52

Because everyone at uni is 18?

Blueballinthegarden · 18/06/2021 23:17

‘Unlikely.’ I don’t think that booking to go away abroad at this time is the best idea either (and I am a millennial) but also the only people I know who are currently booking to travel abroad are in a 40/50+ age range...

MaxNormal · 18/06/2021 23:22

It doesn't say hotel quarantine though, so shouldn't add much cost to the stay?

Tealightsandd · 18/06/2021 23:26

We're a high risk country. Other countries quite understandbly will want to place restrictions on UK entry.

Not everywhere wants to import and let freely spread any and all new strains.

Vaccines will help hugely. But not until the majority are fully vaccinated.

BluebellsGreenbells · 19/06/2021 00:00

Look at it from their perspective, they want to protect their people, what a marvelous idea!

Everyone needs to be responsible and follow the rules. He may be vaccinated but how many Italians have been?

My mum went to university in her 30s. Ever heard of mature students?

DS (28) had both jabs by April, he had hospital leftovers when they were doing Pfizer.

Bit rude to ask why someone has had both vaccines, the individual could have health conditions or work part time as a carer etc.
Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 06:45

To answer a few questions:
DS is 22, he's had both vaccines because he's got underlying health conditions.
As a student, he's got very little money so would need to stay in a cheap Air BnB to quarantine, and how would he get food?
He wanted to spend a few weeks travelling in Europe and visiting friends - legally - after the stress of finals and before settling down to look for a job.
Brexit hasn't helped either ...

OP posts:
Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 06:46

Oh, and he can't get a refund on his ticket either.

Interesting that Spain don't consider us high risk. Probably our huge vaccine take up is part of the assessment. France don't either.....
Baileysforchristmas · 19/06/2021 07:30

We’re high risk country because we are testing so much. Do you not think it’s strange EU countries numbers are going down so fast but they are opening up more than us and they have less people vaccinated?
