Italy - mandatory quarantine

DS was planning to go next week to visit a friend.

He had both vaccines ages ago.

It's so shit, but what can he do?

He's just left Uni.

If he can afford an air b n b - and IF he has health insurance (does nhs have a reciprocal arrangement?) - send him with 5 days worth of pot noodles (Other noodle products are available). Being young sucks in a pandemic, and it's only 5 days.

WeAreTheHeroes · 19/06/2021 09:50

How can you have 106 vaccinations per 100 of the population?

vaccinelover · 19/06/2021 09:50

@Tulipomania can't your son stay with his friend for the quarantine like he would in the UK ?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/06/2021 09:51

We're have two each. We need 200 per 100 of the population.
vaccinelover · 19/06/2021 09:53

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Your DS has been pushed to the front of the queue because he is deemed vulnerable and we have chosen to protect him before others. And he chooses to use that opportunity to fly across Europe to see a mate and laugh in the face of everyone who prioritised him.
Oh you must be really pissed off with me then ! I've also been pushed to the front of the queue and have had both vaccines and will be traveling to Europe this summer. I really don't see how this is a problem for double vaccinated people, doing tests and quarantine. Really you should ask yourself why you're still stuck in this mindset.
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/06/2021 09:58

I don't actually have a problem with the travel itself, it just feels like you should wait until everyone has the same opportunity. You've been given a privilege and feels like you're sticking two fingers up to everyone else who is still eagerly waiting for theirs and would love to travel.

HalzTangz · 19/06/2021 09:58

@Tulipomania

We'll have to agree to differ on that.

what's the point of vaccines otherwise?

The vaccines aren't for travel, the vaccines are to reduce the load on the NHS
newnortherner111 · 19/06/2021 09:59

Nothing he can do about the Italian decision and I don't blame them, even though it is not nice for your DS.

What both you and your DS can do is remember this when it comes to voting next time.

Bluethrough · 19/06/2021 10:00

EU is using the single dose J&J vaccine as well

But the comment was asking how the UK is at 106 per 100.

You mean like all the older generations who shot over to Portugal asap?

My DD was vaccinated in February as she was working in care and on NHS placement.

why shouldn't she be allowed to go on holiday? put her health at all all last year, looking after the vulnerable in the community.

Bluethrough · 19/06/2021 10:07

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Because the J&J vaccine makes the previous comment on that we need 200 doses per 100 pop. inaccurate.

LightasaBreeze · 19/06/2021 10:09

Sorry about this OP but travel will probably be difficult on and off for the next couple of years or so, hopefully he hasn't lost too much money with the plane ticket and next time maybe only book something that has good cancellation t&c, hopefully he will be able to go soon. If he still wants to go he needs, to weigh up what he would lose on the plane ticket against what it would cost to quarantine and the fact it would make it less enjoyable.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/06/2021 10:09

Yes they were annoying too.

DH and I have also done our bit, DH is a police officer, I'm a early years childcarer looking after keyworker children throughout. It's been rough on everyone.

LightasaBreeze · 19/06/2021 10:12

DS got an early vaccination from hospital leftovers because he didn't want to be left sat at home while others went on holiday, anyone else could have done that if they could have been bothered.

Life cannot be 100 percent fair all the time. I don't think we've done too badly in the UK keeping things pretty fair for everyone - vaccinated or not. In the US and Europe, vaccinated, recovered and negative tested people, are allowed to do different things to those that don't fulfil those criteria. That has been the case for a while.

We almost have everyone vaccinated now, it's not like it will take another year and people have to suffer for ages. I don't see the problem and will be traveling myself to see family.

Frazzled2207 · 19/06/2021 10:59

it is rubbish but we are where we are because Boris was slow stopping travel from India in April.
He might not get his money back but has a good chance of being able to change to a different date or possibly different destination.

Unfortunately I can imagine other countries saying similar.

sonjadog · 19/06/2021 11:54

I am afraid your son has just learnt an important lesson about how unreliable travel is at the moment and how he needs to be prepared for the situation to change before he books his tickets. Also, the importance of travel insurance. But these experiences are all part of growing up! He will get over the disappointment and not make the same mistake next time.

Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 12:06

the vaccines are to reduce the load on the NHS

That's not really true though, is it? Lockdown was to reduce the load on the NHS; the vaccines are to stop people getting ill, and reduce the risk of deaths for individuals and for the population as a whole.

Same as with the yearly flu vaccine and the others that are routinely given such as MMR.

you should wait until everyone has the same opportunity.

Why? Do you apply that logic to everything in life? Shall we move to North Korea?

OP posts:
3Britnee · 19/06/2021 12:19

You can still be a carrier if you have had the vaccine, which is why people shouldn't be travelling. In a pandemic. It's not rocket science, is it.

Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 12:29

The risk is much, much lower
www.bmj.com/content/373/bmj.n1112
www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/mounting-evidence-suggests-covid-vaccines-do-reduce-transmission-how-does-work

Which is why many European countries are allowing travellers in who have had both vaccines without requiring quarantine as well.

OP posts:
AlexaShutUp · 19/06/2021 12:29

Well, presumably he knew the risks when he booked as he did it so recently. It has been pretty obvious for a couple of weeks that we're entering a third wave and that other countries are going to be very wary of the delta variant that is now the dominant strain in the UK, so you really didn't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that travel restrictions were extremely likely to change.

Given that he appears to have booked a nonrefundable ticket just a few days ago, I assume that he did so in full knowledge of the risks and felt that he could afford to lose the money.

Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 12:32

Yes, he knew the risks.

It's more about the missed opportunity than the money I think.

It's been so hard on young people.

OP posts:
Confusedaboutlots · 19/06/2021 12:35

the vaccine doesn’t prevent you from being a carrier so your DS will be able to carry over the more transmissible and dangerous delta variant to other countries who are lagging in their vaccination programs.

it’s all good for your DS being vaccinated but strikes me as short sighted and selfish.

And now you have the nerve to complain about a quarantine - what do you expect them to do - to welcome the delta variant with open arms?

no sympathy whatsoever sorry

AlexaShutUp · 19/06/2021 12:36

It has been hard on young people, but as my teenage daughter would be the first to point out, it has been hard on everybody. It's a pandemic, it sucks.

I'd have loved a holiday abroad this summer. It has been a tough year and we could have done with the break. However, common sense dictates that now is not a sensible time to travel - it's actually quite a selfish thing to do if you don't actually need to do it. We need to be patient and wait until the situation improves.
