Italy - mandatory quarantine

Tulipomania · 18/06/2021 18:37

DS was planning to go next week to visit a friend.

He had both vaccines ages ago.

It's so shit, but what can he do?

He's just left Uni.

DolphinFC · 19/06/2021 07:42

He's going to have to chalk this up to experience and move.

As far as "what's the point in vaccines?' is concerned, you're going to have to be a bit patient. When 80%have had both jabs the value will start to emerge.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 19/06/2021 07:44

The vaccines weren’t created to allow people to holiday.

I think travel should be heavily restricted and proper quarantine for essential journeys to stop strains being spread from country to country.

MaxNormal · 19/06/2021 07:45

3Britnee the rest of Europe is opening up and travelling more freely now. And he's been vaccinated. So I fail to understand the outrage.

MaxNormal · 19/06/2021 07:47

OP could you help him with a bit of money for a cheap Airbnb for five days? And could he nip into a shop em route?

starfish4 · 19/06/2021 08:04

It's harsh, but three weeks is a long time in terms of virus circumstances, and we have no control over what other countries will do. DD also a uni student, had planned her first mini break away this week in same country +two days notice) and then had to isolate for first time. Sadly nothing is guaranteed right now.

Todayissunny · 19/06/2021 08:09

It's a shame, but I don't have sympathy and hardly see it as a hardship that he can't visit his friends. I think its terribly sad that young people are missing out on these important experiences. But there are other things he can do.

There are many of us living in main land europe (and other places) who haven't been able to travel to see close family for a long time because of quarantine etc. For me it means 10 days quarantine in the uk when arriving and 10 days when returning here.
..sorry, missing my family and feel a bit bitter, sensitive and irritated reading things like this.

Todayissunny · 19/06/2021 08:11

... to add quarantine even applies to fully vaccinated.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I live in spain in a town where there have been very few cases and until recently, the hospital was free of covid patients, since they discharged their last covid patient a couple of months ago.

The last couple of weeks, we've been having more and more people arriving on holiday and the numbers are going up. We don't want holiday makers. I'm sure no one does in these holiday destinations.

I want people to stay where they live for time being, follow the rules and get the numbers down. Then we can all travel.

I'm desperate to travel home and see my family that I haven't seen for over 18m, my sister is seriously ill awaiting a possible full thorax transplant, but I can't. So I don't have any sympathy for people wanting a fucking jolly for no good reason other than they want to, just to spread covid further.

We've followed hard rules here and kept covid at bay. I don't understand what's so fucking hard about that in the uk.

Baileysforchristmas · 19/06/2021 08:13

Well it woo be the British on holiday in Spain more like the Germans seeing as they are allowed to travel.

lljkk · 19/06/2021 08:17

I am bummed for your son, OP. x

Todayissunny · 19/06/2021 08:19

@3Britnee I agree. I believe the uk government is still advising not to travel for leisure even if you are allowed.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/06/2021 08:19

Your DS has been pushed to the front of the queue because he is deemed vulnerable and we have chosen to protect him before others. And he chooses to use that opportunity to fly across Europe to see a mate and laugh in the face of everyone who prioritised him.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 19/06/2021 08:20

Italy’s vaccine programme has been chaotic.
Never understand why mnetters are always so eager to denigrate the UK and big up any other country.
I would normally visit Italy several times s year and their chaotic culture is refreshing, but not well-suited for pandemic mitigation. The reason I am not visiting this summer is precisely because they are so knee-jerk with the regulations which change weekly and from region to region.

It doesn't matter where people are coming from imo.
legosnowqueen · 19/06/2021 08:22

I realise it is tough on young people but wasn't he aware of the requirement to quarantine when he booked his non refundable ticket?

Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 08:23

legosnowqueen he booked his ticket on Wednesday to travel next week. The quarantine was announced yesterday.

There is an exemption for people travelling to work. Maybe he could get his friend to ‘hire’ your DS for something? 😀

VariantL1130 · 19/06/2021 08:41

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Because everyone at uni is 18?
Millennials are currently between 25 and 40 years old. So as he's just left uni the chances are he's under 25.

Regardless of how old he is, fuck off with that generation bullshit. I'm a millennial with two kids, my own home, a steady job, savings in the bank, and I hate avocados. I also haven't been abroad for years. It's a worthless stereotype that adds nothing to a debate and says more about you than it does about OP's son.

Teachers were almost all vaccinated in March (first dose) as a priority, and anyone over the age of 12 could be booked for their slot as of 3/6. Open days in most towns at least a couple of days a week.

Sure, initially, Italy, like many other EU countries were some way behind the UK on the rollout. That was 6 months ago now though. Digital passports available as of Thursday night. Everyone able to download the paper version of their vaccination certificate about 4 hours after the second dose.

All of Italy now in white zone, except for one northern region, meaning basically the only restrictions are masks where social distancing can't be respected.

Regions can, and do, and will, make ad hoc decisions should further restrictions become necessary. Which seems logical if something needs to be done quickly. In any case, as far as I understand it, the colour system used was like the tiers used in the UK (just without the having to sit outside with people)

OP- what kind of ticket was the flight that he can't get a refund or at least a change? Even lo-cost are mainly offering that as a guarantee. Will his insurance not cover it?

Tulipomania · 19/06/2021 08:54

Being a feckless youth he only thought about insurance when I asked him that question yesterday !

OP posts:
Blueballinthegarden · 19/06/2021 09:26

@VariantL1130 thank you, this is what I was trying to say but you’ve articulated it much better than I was able to! The ‘blame it all on millennials’ thing is so tiresome and pointless.

MaxNormal · 19/06/2021 09:28

3Britnee I really doubt that all the businesses in your part of Spain who rely on tourism would share your view.

Oh bugger. Cross your fingers that because quarantine has been introduced, the flight might end up being cancelled. Is it Ryanair?
Bluethrough · 19/06/2021 09:33

@TeddingtonTrashbag

the Italians vaccine program per 100 population is very slightly lower than Germany's - @73 doses per 100 population, Germany - 75.

UK is 106.

Delta variant isn't widespread yet in EU, it will be soon but by then, their vaccine program will be ahead of the curve.

Considering where they started, EU has done very well and thats reflected in infection rates and now eu citizens can holiday, something we are months away from doing.
