Us and them- the vaccine. So much pressure

ToTheLetter01 · 18/06/2021 14:59

Before i begin, i am not an anti vaxxer. Me and my DS have had all our jabs and we also have annual flu jabs.
However i feel such hostility and pressure from people who have had their vaccine for me to have it. The reason i do not want it at this moment is just because its still in the experimental stage until 2023 and i would like to know more long term data.
This is my choice, its my body and everyone should have the choice. Choice to have the vaccine and choice to not. I do not shame nor ridicule anyone for having it or not.
However i have felt so much pressure from friends and others in the wider public, media, government.

I feel like the nation is becoming split between us and them. ( vaccinated and unvaccinated). With things becoming unfair for people. Eg. may be able to travel and not quarantine if had vaccines, care home workers may be forced to have the vaccine. Now i get the point of view of they have had it and may be more "safe". But how is the ok in a freedom and rights point of view. As i stated freedom to do what you want with your body.

I feel like this world is becoming some kind of dystopian world. I miss my old life, i took all the freedom for granted. Its true that you don't realise how good it was until it's gone.
I don't want people to be hostile to me because of my choice to wait for long term data on the vaccine. Half of me wants to lie to people i've had it so they will not be stand off towards me.

Do you think I wanted to get the vaccine ? Do you not think that people who got the vaccine also worry about possible long term effects of it ?

I did it because I had to. I did it because if I didn't, things wouldn't change. I didn't do it because I thought it was risk free.

I think people who don't want to get it are basically a bit selfish. I was scared when I got it and I am still scared. But if everyone thought like you, no one would get it and it would prolong everyone's suffering.

Is your life more important than mine ?

My own mother begged me not to get it, as she believes it's all a huge plot to kill off the population. She sends me videos and reminds me of my mistake daily. I'm sick of it. She even mocks our increase in cases ' I thought you all had the vaccine? Why do you have so many cases ? Why can't you travel? See I told you it was all BS. '.

It's very hard to live with this constant abuse coming my way. Of course she'll not get the vaccine. She also doesn't care about hand washing, masks, isolating when required. Breaks covid rules constantly. Oh and she already had covid because she really was asking for it with her behaviour. She was fine and in her 60s.

From my experience a lot of people who don't want to get the vaccine, don't believe in covid or think it's a huge hoax for population control.

woodfort · 21/06/2021 11:59

Most people I am friendly with have no idea whether I am vaccinated or not (I’ve had the first one and will have the next later in summer) or I they. It’s simply not a big topic of conversation.
I know that my family have had it and one or two friends have mentioned it in passing (eg they’ve scheduled their vaccine to get out of a social thing they didn’t want to go to anyway - that sort of thing) but those friends haven’t ever come out and asked if I’ve had it/ when I’m getting it although I also have mentioned it in passing. Other friends have just never mentioned it. I have a group WhatsApp conservation with a friendship group of about 6 people, no one has mentioned it there at all. I’m assuming most people are getting it but it’s really just an assumption.

So yeah anyway, in my life it’s very much not “us vs them”, it just doesn’t really come up.

SecretKeeper1 · 21/06/2021 12:10

It’s not “us v them” for me either because everyone I know, except two, have had it and been grateful for it.

Of the two that haven’t - one has severe allergies to a multitude of things, including medication, and her GP has advised against for now. She’s still shielding. The other is a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist so I’m not hanging round with her because a) she’s a risk, and b) she’s got really boring.

Rest of us are double jabbed and remain sensibly cautious. Happy with that.

Delatron · 21/06/2021 12:32

Yes I don’t know anyone in real life who has been offered the vaccine and refused.

I’m 45 with no health issues and I’m being double jabbed today. It always confuses me when people say the vulnerable (apart from those that can’t have it and children) aren’t protected yet. How can they not be when they are double jabbing healthy 40 year olds currently?

MarshaBradyo · 21/06/2021 12:35

I agree with last few posters re rl situation. No ‘us and them’ everyone is just getting a vaccine

A pp says why focus on a few people who aren’t - well they keep starting threads to tell us and to tell us how we keep talking about it. You could just decide not to and then the focus on here will go away.

So much this! IRL everyone I know, even my 24 yr old hairdresser, is thrilled to get it. This us and them is only on MN.
Hornbill123456789 · 21/06/2021 13:19

I’m confused @bumbleymummy, maybe because I’m skim reading!

You feel MSM are not reporting the risks accurately?

I’ve just been reading this - which again - makes me think things are not being ‘swept under the carpet’

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/coronavirus-vaccine-period-problems-reports-b1869278.html%3famp

bumbleymummy · 21/06/2021 13:27

The ‘us and them’ comes about from your opinion of those who have made a different decision to you. Such as calling them a ‘risk’ or insulting their intelligence because they’re unvaccinated. It always strikes me as a bit silly that only unvaccinated adults if a certain age are considered a risk - snd that age is dependent on whether or not that group has been offered the vaccine yet!

@Hornbill123456789 that link don’t open for me but the text says the risk for over 50s? Does the article have a breakdown of number of vaccine doses given to under 50s to calculate their risk of clots? Afaik the mhra haven’t been reporting it like that yet.

No, I haven’t said that, are you confusing ne with another poster? My last post was in response to your previous one btw.

MareofBeasttown · 21/06/2021 13:32

Afraid you can't change anyone's opinion of you. Your only choice is to take the vaccine or not.

Hornbill123456789 · 21/06/2021 13:33

Sorry @bumbleymummy I think I am! Apologies!!

True.

Also if you don’t want focus on your decisions maybe give starting so many threads telling people a miss. The focus is only on mn because these threads are constantly running.

Irl nothing like this.

bumbleymummy · 21/06/2021 15:10

Except clearly it is going on irl based on how people here are talking about their ‘friends’/relatives who haven’t been vaccinated. I guess it’s just that they won’t say it to their face.

As I said I don’t know anyone irl who hasn’t.

So no I’m not saying anything about ‘friends’ not to their face.

We’re all open about when appointments are etc how we feel, hasn’t been an issue at all.

Legoninjago1 · 21/06/2021 15:21

@anewpost I'm so sorry you're getting so much grief from your mum. That is really shitty snd uncalled for. I agree wholeheartedly with every word of your post.

sunnnysideup · 21/06/2021 15:24

Those that are saying if you choose not to get the vaccine then it’s your choice as you have to quarantine and can’t travel?! Are you living under a rock? How was your holiday abroad this year? 🤣 You still can’t travel you still have to self isolate if you come into contact with someone who’s tested positive, you still have to wear a mask, you still have to social distance and you’ll still have to lockdown again in autumn. You’ve had the vaccine and you don’t have any special privileges for it. You was lied to. Get it?

It certainly is beginning to feel like that. I'm sick of it and angry. And will no longer play ball. I'm living my life how I want from now on.
UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 21/06/2021 15:32

@Temp023

And you’re so much more precious than the rest of us, the people you are relying on to be the guinea pigs in your experimental cohort. Of course we’re hostile !
This! By all means, hold off on the vaccine and wait to see what happens to the rest of us. But don’t complain about not having the same privileges as the vaccinated as we slowly reopen society. You can’t have your cake and eat it too!
Cornettoninja · 21/06/2021 15:32

You was lied to

By who? No one official ever stated that getting a vaccine would equal any of those things.

What the rumour mill got caught up however….

Beannag · 21/06/2021 15:34

I don't know anyone in real life who is that arsed. Most of my friends who have had it have mentioned it in passing, I've told people if they've asked me (had both doses), but other than that it's not a big thing. Once all adults have been offered it I think it's fair really that exemptions will apply to travel etc, the other option is to not allow anyone which seems unfair when everyone will have had the chance

ollyollyoxenfree · 21/06/2021 15:35

@sunnnysideup

No one said getting vaccinated would automatically mean you could go on holiday or wouldn't have to isolate

I didn't get vaccinated for any the reasons you list, I did to to a) help get us out of this mess, and b) reduce my chances of infection, long COVID and passing it onto others

It's not experimental and you dont have to have it! Just be prepared to have possibly have some restrictions imposed upon you.
