Everyone whom I know is more scared of the Governments reaction to Covid, than Covid itself.

The vaccinations are the most protection we are ever going to get, and yes people will still die.

Why can't we just accept that people die of Covid like we accept thousands each year who have died through flu and other preventable diseases?Millions and millions of people have died through smoking and alcohol, costing millions to the NHS. Yet we haven't banned them?
Viruses mutate and Covid is no different. They're will be variants indefinitely. Are we to cower behind our sofas every time a new one is announced?
The media in full force say how serious the new strain is, then lo and behold, weeks later it shows the vaccines are still offering high protection.
Public Health have started there is no correlation between the Indian variant and hospital admissions.
There is also a report that over 80% of Covid infections were caught in hospital, yet hospitality is are still targeted with table service, masks and track and trace.

When did this become about cases? not deaths and hospital admissions like it was to begin with?

The media and government have done well to completely scare people into submission. This is no longer about protection, its control and power.

Mumsnet is the only place is seems where people want these restrictions to carry on.

Everyone in real life has had enough and can see through this bullshit for what it really is!

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Densely populated. That's what increases the risk

It's one of the factors, yes, but certainly not the only one. With morbidity being centred mostly upon seniors, those with comorbidities and those insufficiently vaccinated, we might have expected Florida to suffer terribly since easing restrictions nearly a year ago, and it's simply not happening

And why on earth would you say the US has its borders "closed to the UK" when it's patently not so? Granted pure tourism isn't yet allowed, but that still leaves a huge number of incomers

150,000 with Covid. Who have tested positive for Covid with 28 days of death. Yes. Many were after 28 days. The true number of dead is higher.

Of course the US isn't 100% closed to all travel from UK. US citizens, genuinely essential travel etc. But that is very different to open borders.

People scream why can't we do the same when other countries are able to relax some restrictions but they have tantrums when asked to take the same measures those places took to be in the position to do that.

uk.usembassy.gov/covid-19-coronavirus-information/

Travel restrictions remain in place for travel from the United Kingdom to the United States.

Entry of foreign nationals who were physically present within the following list of countries within 14 days prior to their entry or attempted entry into the United States is suspended, per Presidential Proclamations 9984, 9992, 9993, 9996 and the subsequent proclamations issued May 24, 2020, and January 25, 2021:

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, excluding overseas territories outside of Europe.

Department of Homeland Security, described above, I have determined that it is in the interests of the United States to take action to restrict and suspend the entry into the United States, as immigrants or nonimmigrants, of noncitizens of the United States (“noncitizens”) who were physically present within the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom (excluding overseas territories outside of Europe), the Republic of Ireland, the Federative Republic of Brazil, and the Republic of South Africa during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry into the United States.

A decision is ‘not imminent’

ban on travel from the UK to the US was introduced on 16 March last year. The presidential proclamation of 14 March 2020 banned UK travellers from entering the US because their presence “threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security”.

It prevents holidays and non-essential business or family trips to the US. The principle exception is: “Any alien whose entry would be in the national interest.”

We cannot expect to open up like other countries when we didn't take the same measures as them.

UK borders have been largely wide open. Hence the spread of the Delta strain.

Tealightsandd · 15/06/2021 21:13

Its people like you why people are scared and why no normality will return. Because you just don't get it.

Ah ok. The highly trained and experienced experts - the epidemiologists, the virologists, the British Medical Association. They 'don't get it', but you do. You know more than them. Right so.

No it's people like you who don't get it. Even when it's staring you in the face. Failure to contain is what drags this out and what keeps us from retuning to normality.

Quartz2208 · 15/06/2021 21:16

The CDC has just announced it as a variant of concern which now makes up 10% of the cases. Given what we know has happened here the Delta variant that is only going to go one way.

The feeling is that if the vaccines work and it goes the right way for the 19th that the border will open at some point in the last week in July/first week in August with negative tests needed. Whether it will be for double vaccinated over 18s who knows. AZ proves difficult there as US still hasnt cleared it so it isnt for example seen as a vaccine in order to go to Broadway.

Germany/France it is currently 2-4% of the cases and rising as well.

It isnt just us

To be fair though the BBC and Sky have got a lot to answer for

Nick Wyatt seems to have borne the brunt of it yesterday.

For every one of those scientists you've found I could find you one with an opposing view. You align with who and what suits your personality best.

The NHS have spoken on the BBc saying they are having a different experience this time. That the NHS is not overwhelmed, people are not dying from covid in the way they were. that the vaccine IS working. Many other scientists have come forward and said 'dont give your kids the jabs - they dont need it'

But you choose to believe you know better than them

MN Covid board "if you are doubly vaccinated you still have to wear a mask"

Also MN Covid board. "what has G7 got to do with it. They dont have to wear masks/socially distance, they have been doubly vaccinated.

MercyBooth · 15/06/2021 21:41

@Scrambledcustard it was completely out of order what they did. Appalling.................but at the same time entirely predictable. The anger at the Government and the media is spilling over and in the case of the latter they have leaked things to "test" public reaction for many many months, Not Wyatts fault but to them he A. represents the media and B. he was simply right there in front of them.

Some good news at least. Long Covid clinics are opening for children. It was hard for them to access treatment previously, as many of the current setups were for adult Long Covid sufferers only.

@AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken

Well said *@bookworm14*

I had to stop replying because I realised people who are happy to live in their own four walls, getting paid the same as they did last year, with no employees to be responsible for or social life to retain will never understand the stress on business owners or the mental health impacts on people who live for social interaction.

@JaniieJones repeatedly claims we need “perspective” while only spouting off their own narrow view of the world from their comfy armchair.

It’s all pretty sickening really.

Well said!

@MrsHastingslikethebattle

Also, it makes me shake my head in disbelief when people say it's about going to a pub.

It's about freedom. It's about democracy. Its about being lied to time and time again. It's about the media manipulating facts. It's about scare mongering.

I'm 33. I've lived my life. And yet our generation coming up are dropping out of uni, can't go out, whole sectors on their knees.

The cure is worse than the disease

I agree but MrsHastings you haven't lived your life - you are only 33 and have so much to come and to look forward to x

'It's about freedom. It's about democracy. Its about being lied to time and time again. It's about the media manipulating facts. It's about scare mongering.'

Oh rubbish, we have our freedom. No one is lying to you

It is about a pandemic and a recent rise in cases that they need to be certain isn't impacting on hospitalisations.

Calm down fgs.

Namenic · 15/06/2021 22:22

Don’t think the cure is worse than the disease. I have colleagues in India who had to take time off work to get medical care for relatives, healthy young and middle aged neighbours died. U.K. is fortunate to be ahead of India in terms of vaccinations, but I think we should be v cautious of the delta strain.

Nhs is now behind with clinics and surgeries for non covid diseases - yes nhs was not overwhelmed, but massive short and long term disruption to normal service which will impact the population health for several years. With previous waves, U.K. suffered greatly by not being cautious enough - why make the same mistakes again?

Oh really? What bloody freedoms do you have?

Do you like The PM allowing you to go to a restaurant...or have a birthday party...or hug your family...or have a wedding ...or go to a nightclub...or take your child to school...or go on a well deserved break after working your ass off all year round???!!!

Do you like being told you can't have more than 30 people at an event while they hold barbecues with 38 people just because they are the Leaders of the world?! Really?! Omg no wonder we are going downhill.

Do you like it when these freedoms are taken away at their leisure?! Let's blame it on the virus, shall we?!

People died for these freedoms we now take for granted and because of your type we are slowly losing them

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/06/2021 22:36

What's Hmm for

Exactly what you said, Osbert - those who don't live in the US, know nothing about it but still carry on anyway (obviously I wouldn't include Americans in that, since they can be expected to know)

Can't tell you how much I envy your citizenship though ...

SueSaid · 15/06/2021 22:37

I don't like any of those things but I understand the need for them and more importantly we are actually able to do rather a lot.

Your 'type' are like a bunch of 'yeah but no but' teens arguing about things that are actually necessary.

You mean the experts who have continually been proven wrong?

Practically every single SAGE model hasnt been no where near accurate.

There are plenty of scientists, epidemiologists and virologist who disagree with lockdowns, challenge the statistics but yet they don't get asked their opinions in the mainstream media and are often silenced.

You imply that I think I know better than the scientists, yet you say the actual death rate is much higher without knowing the actual figure.

No one knows the actual figure but yet figures yet flung in our face to coerce us into submission but yet the figures aren't accurate.

Just to get away from the sheer boredom of endless Covid coverage, jump in the car and go to a mall with no fucking queues and people throwing themselves against the wall in the sight of another human being or the ridiculousness of wearing a mask to enter a restaurant and then take it off once you're at the table.

They haven't been proved wrong and the SAGE models have been very accurate

SoSadAboutMyDad · 15/06/2021 23:35

‘’Practically every single SAGE model hasnt been no where near accurate.’’

So you’re agreeing with us then? By using a double negative you are saying that every single SAGE model has been accurate Grin. This just highlights the intelligence displayed on this thread by the OP.

There are not plenty, there are a few. There's a fairly consensual position on what needs doing, with fringe positions held by some of course. And the wacky views get plenty of airtime.

The NHS needs better funding. To be honest I'm fed up of having to "protect the NHS" when the government is doing fuck all to help them.

@Roonerspismed

kani were you never young?

It’s younger people I feel for. Just the care free days of dancing or meeting in groups or whatever it is you are into. It matters hugely that we have to live this way forever now. It sucks and although I’m older, I will do everything I can to ensure younger people have the same opportunities I did.

Or leaving the house if they're CEV.
