Not sure how Boris can stand up tonight and ask us to wait 'just another few weeks' after his antics this weekend.

Nor after seeing the scenes at countless pubs where people were celebrating the footy results

I'm 100% done now
@hamstersarse fair point, it was risk of catching it & there are signs that the link to hospitalisation and or death is broken.

But even at current rates of hospitalisation (5%, around half the rate vs before vaccines) or death (0.5% vs 2-5% pre vaccine) that means if it runs rampant through the population there's 2.3m in hospital and 230k deaths.

I'm guessing the actual modelling done by people who know what they're doing is a lot less scary than my back of fag packet version but I still suspect the numbers won't be insignificant.
I don't think your numbers are right there.

2.3m in hospital is just not going to happen. You have to take into account the differences in risk with age, and how the vaccincation distribution is in the most vulnerable?

All the estimates for June 21st from Sage are well above what is actually happening at the moment i.e. we are well below what the worst case scenario was from Sage when they set the June 21st date.

Well below.

I just don't understand how people can argue with the science.

So many people think they know better.

You can do pretty much everything except theatres and nightclubs.

You can have people in your home, go on hols (UK) and go to pubs.
Just do it with fewer people than you might want ideally.

MercyBooth · 14/06/2021 17:18

@TheVampiresWife Exactly people didnt give a shit. I dont remember fluidiots being a word for example. There is NO WAY flu caused the same amount of reaction and caring. And a lot of us know damn well it will be back to the default setting of not giving a fuck when this is over. Hell its happening already. The evictions moretorium ended two weeks ago.

JinglingHellsBells · 14/06/2021 17:19

@motogogo

I'm done too, we are having a party this weekend and as the weather won't be great it will be inside. Everyone is vaccinated, I simply had enough with one rule for the elite and other for us. We worked from home and wore masks, we didn't go overseas, we didn't see our kids for months on end meanwhile others were "visiting relatives" or "on business" in their thousands and brought back the delta variant
so what are you doing that you need to broadcast it? You can have a party. But no vaccine is 100% effective and people can still carry the virus and pass it on.
@Thewiseoneincognito if id lost someone to Covid i wouldnt be putting a laughing smiley on the end of one of my posts. Sorry but i find that strange.
Sorry but I find it strange that you’d expect me to be in a constant state of mourning. Since when did losing someone to Covid mean you can’t use emojis?

What an odd thing to say. 🤔

Like the #covidiots one!

PurpleLorry · 14/06/2021 17:27

@stopgap she's just had one pfizer, the rest of her room mates have had 2 (she's the youngest)

thanks for the well wishes - think it's ridiculous they can't give her steroids. She would normally get them when she is chesty (covid or not, because of her asthma) so I'm surprised the doctor hasn't just prescribed them but apparently they won't do so without speaking to her and the first slot is Wednesday. I have told her to call 111 if she feels her chest is getting worse/she deteriorates so they can get them to her sooner.

It's horrible when they are ill and not at home!

@hamstersarse hopefully it is nothing. Tbh doesn't make too much of a difference to me whether it's covid or not as any chest infection is horrible for her because of her asthma - it's just worrying as she has to self isolate now and the primary healthcare system in this country seems to have completely disappeared since covid arrived!

bumbleymummy · 14/06/2021 17:27
@MrsHastingslikethebattle - it's impressive that you found my post to challenge it, yet missed posts by people in their 20s who would like to be jabbed. It's really important to remember that some of those young people didn't get into group 6 for asthma, previous myocarditis and other illnesses; yet they feel just as vulnerable as those in their 30s/40s/50s with those same conditions. Then there are many in their 20s who have friends who've had covid and simply don't want the long term symptoms they've seen. Some others have vulnerable family or friends they want to protect. Whatever their reasons, it's very clear that many of them really want the jab to protect themselves and others. If cases were still low then great the risk is low, but unfortunately they aren't, so let's get to the herd immunity point as quickly as we can rather than screw it up and overshoot, with all the extra long-term illness and deaths that will cause.
There’s a massive difference between ‘the worried well’ who are low risk and simply want the vaccine and the vulnerable groups who could end up seriously ill/ hospitalised needing the vaccine to reduce their risk. The restriction plan was not supposed to be there until everyone who wants a vaccine had one - it was supposed to reduce the pressure on the NHS by protecting the most vulnerable groups who were most likely to end up in hospital until they could be vaccinated. There is no need to move the goalposts now. Waiting until a few more young people are vaccinated is going to make little difference to the hospitalisation rate.

placemats · 14/06/2021 17:28

More cars on roads now, especially in London, because people don't want to use public transport due to non mask wearing. It's almost at pre pandemic levels.

I'm going to Northern Ireland and the extra 4 week delay doesn't prevent me from doing this. I'm also going to London for two weeks and the extra delay doesn't prevent me from doing this. I'm travelling to and back from Northern Ireland by car via Scotland - Ireland doesn't lift restrictions until 19th July. Going to London first class on the train - my holiday treat!

MercyBooth · 14/06/2021 17:28

Your point is odd towards the end because two years ago there wasn’t the risk of passing on a highly contagious respiratory virus that could cause significant problems for said vulnerable persons

Busted!!! I can think of no better word. DH caught colds and the flu one time and as he has COPD it was very risky for him. Ppl didnt give a fuck though and im beginning to think that it was because they couldnt virtue signal all over social media so wernt too bothered about infecting someone else. You have proved the point that @TheVampiresWife made.

HazeyJaneII · 14/06/2021 17:29

Things are as normal as they can be at this particular time...
Do I like it? - no
Am I smug or gleeful about it? - no
Have I been having a doozy of a time over the last year? - fuck no
Do I think we need to slow down the opening up for now? - reluctantly, yes.
Am I done? - Fuck me, I am indeed done....done with Mumsnet for a bit at least, it has become overwhelmingly depressing and I feel like the arsehole ratio is higher than it ever was.

Good luck all.

placemats · 14/06/2021 17:32

My post was in reply to those who said 'wake up and don't let your life be restricted! - boo hoo'

I can't travel to Northern Ireland via Holyhead/Dublin unless my trip is essential.

It is because my mum needs further care needs but the paperwork involved makes travelling through Scotland much easier.

bumbleymummy · 14/06/2021 17:33

Covid is more infectious and because people can be asymptomatic in an infectious phase, more likely to spread, whereas people tend to stay home with flu.

Flu myth. Up to 70% of flu cases can by asymptomatic. @HazeyJaneII

placemats · 14/06/2021 17:35

I'm with you Hazey, the ratio of arseholery is rising exponentially.

placemats · 14/06/2021 17:37

That literally makes no sense at all sorry. Busted for what? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have family with COPD, one also passed away with Covid too so I know how terrifying it can be should they get sick from Covid.I hope your DH is doing ok. I’m confused why you’re mentioning virtue signalling though?

SofiaMichelle · 14/06/2021 17:38

@Lostinacloud

My name is indeed spot on, currently my head is lost in a cloud of absolute bullshit coming from our government, not backed up by actual facts, data or reasoning. People need to wise up and get their heads out of the clouds ffs you condescending arse.
What do you do for a job? What's your academic background?

As soon as you people start with rhetoric about others needing to 'wise up', we really know where we are.

MercyBooth · 14/06/2021 17:39

@Flaxmeadow After reading this post by @CyberGhost id say the NHS needs to get its own house in order, and by this i mean the higher up pen pushers not the frontline workers.

Really? Because I cannot count the number of times I had to work with a cold (both in hospitality AND in NHS clinical, patient facing roles roles) because it was that or get sanctioned for sick time. I even got told to come in once after asking my WARD MANAGER for advice because it was "just a cold"...... which turned out to be bacterial pneumonia

Can I just add the comment "they're all vaxxed and tested" doesn't wash either.

I am vaxxed and tested yet the rules still apply to me. As they do to every vaxxed and tested person in the country. But we don't get special dispensation.....

bumbleymummy · 14/06/2021 17:52

@placemats

Not all infected present all the symptoms. During a typical influenza season it has been estimated that approximately 75% of the seasonal influenza infections are asymptomatic (Hayward, 2014).

Bunnyfuller · 14/06/2021 17:53

@Unsure33

Lateral tests are free. PCR tests are not free for travel,, or not available if you have no symptoms.

@Workyticket what do you count as 'antics'? This was a G7 meeting- not a G100!!!

Most gatherings were outside. The person not social distancing was Macron (typical.)

Masks were being worn and social distancing did take place when appropriate.

Workyticket · 14/06/2021 17:59

I won't be able to stand like this with my family on my wedding day. They weren't distanced.

I also won't be able to have a drink standing chatting with my family.

It's all about parity

All of this could also happen if restrictions are allowed to continue or are tightened.

But it's (a dangerous mutation) far less likely

Viruses spread and mutate, it's what they do.

But some mutations are more dangerous than others

So what do you suggest?

Try to follow the science and Gov't advice as much as possible

Shall we just live with restrictions forever and hope for the best?

No one knows.

Look, I'd be the first one at an end of covid street party, bottle of wine in one hand, Scotch Egg in the other, dancing to "Everybody (Backsteets Back)" and hugging and kissing my neighbours, but we are just not there yet and ATM it's best to be cautious
