Just spamming this across numerous threads!

nhsvolunteerresponders.org.uk/i-want-to-volunteer/how-the-programme-works

After the huge number of appointments made recently for vaccinations, more volunteers are needed if you have any spare time

36 cases of the Nepal Variant now in England.

Fuck me.

JBM reporting that Whitty is pushing for lockdown to be delayed by a month in the FT - think you can read the article if you go via the tweet

His line about the NW being the canary in the coal mine (again) feels so true

EasterIssland · 11/06/2021 20:35

Thanks for the link. Really interesting. Hope more vaccines are given to younger people in coming weeks and manage to delay some part of the wave

Im surprised about tej 2m 50+ who have not had the vaccine !

36 cases of the Nepal Variant now in England.

Why not include the full details?

The briefing includes some epi on Delta + spike protein mutation N417K

Also known as Delta-AY.1, first identified in travellers from Nepal

36 cases, most in South East & West Midlands. Not rapidly spreading.

Young children have relative protection from coronavirus because their bodies produce a strong immune response to it, according to a study.

The University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Hospital for Children conducted research which found that infants produce relatively high levels of antibodies and immune cells which protect against the virus, compared to adults.

Researchers say the findings could help explain why younger children appear to be protected from the severe effects of Covid-19 at a time of their development when they could be more vulnerable, PA reports.

Dr Anu Goenka, clinical lecturer in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology at the University of Bristol, said the findings could help design vaccines which mimic the protection in children.

@TheDinosaurTrain haven't got to the FT article but the JBM thread is a good read in itself. He's one of a dwindling number of employees of media outlets who still merits the term journalist

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2021 21:03

I know someone who is 53 and not vaccinated. It isn't through choice. Long story related to having a stroke/mystery illness (suspiciously in April last year)and various faffing and procrastinating doctors means she still has not been invited to a vaccine. And yet she must really be pretty vulnerable.

Perihelion · 11/06/2021 21:07

9th May Edinburgh's rate was 18.9 per 100,000. Today it's 190.5.
We've not had half term to slow the spread. Lots of positive cases in schools, bars and restaurants. Aside from the start of January, this the highest our cases have been. All the while, life is almost back to normalConfused. We're a different sort of canary to the NE as there's less natural immunity and the schools only have 2 weeks left before the summer holidays.

boys3 · 11/06/2021 21:10

cases only part of the story, but still the easiest metrics to quickly source and manipulate (in the constructive sense of the word).

Although not a huge fan of two data points these graphs show the movement for the most recent seven days (based on a two day lag) as compared with the prior seven. Each council is named on the graphs - which means there are going to be a fair number of them, sorry :)

The y- axis reflect the most recent seven day case rate per 100,000.

Any council above the diagonal red line has increased (so most of them); anything below has shown a week on week fall in cases. So we'll see Bolton there but not many others.

The strange shading is to indicate that those in the no more than 25 per 100,000 band - irrespective of whether they have increased or decreased.

Just for a change starting with the East of England; specifically councils in Cambridgeshire; Norfolk and Suffolk.

So whilst almost all have increased compared to the prior week almost all continue to have a latest rate below 25 per 100,000. This is not therefore a typical picture.

Staying in the East of England Essex and Hertforshire. At this point I've realised I'v forgotten about the UTLAs in the East of England; they'll follow on later.
