Time to move on

This virus is here to stay and will always be around. So my question is, do we as a country move on once we are all vaccinated and get on with life as it were pre pandemic. Go out with friends, no face masks, travel Internationally and enjoy holidays, no bubbles at work or school. Not isolating untill we have a negative test ect ect. Or are we OK with going back a step everytime a new mutation pops up.

Personally for me, I think as this is around forever now and eventually will be controlled, I want things to go back to normal normal not go back a few steps if a variant appear. We can't evade them all and eventually one will evade the vaccines to an extent, but to lock the country up as we have and are doing, it's intolerable.

'Covid won’t ever be running rampant because we now have vaccines.'

Honestly if it were as simple as that why on earth do you think they are being so cautious? It is in no one's interest to drag this out anymore than is needed. We need flu vaccs every year, the same may well happen with covid as it continues to mutate. If it runs wild again, which it seems to be heading for with 8k cases today, then we could be in a difficult position before the next round of booster vaccs are administered if needed.

No one knows do they, so that is why they aren't rushing things. What can't you do now that you want to barring going abroad on your hols?

southeastdweller · 11/06/2021 21:19

What have cases got to do with anything? It's hospitalisations numbers that matter and that number is relatively tiny.

That number is increasing. By the time you are concerned about the number in hospital, it will be too late to stop the waves with a few more restrictions. Instead we will probably need a short lockdown. Please think about it.

Another day and another unscientific drivel, selfishness, and conspiracy theories on here I see.

Of course it will increase but the number will always be relatively small because of the vaccines. The days of us needing another lockdown are over.

Do you think epidemiologists, virologists etc just make shit up?

It is on the news now that it is more transmissible and possible that vaccines not as effective. 8k cases today could lead to a problem so of course further restrictions may be a possibility.

I think many people on here don't actually get their information but experts but just pick ans choose from opinions on mn! Nuts.

From www.thetimes.co.uk/article/indian-covid-variant-64-more-infectious-than-kent-strain-officials-conclude-vrht7mgvx

Although two vaccine doses are almost as effective against the Indian variant as against the Kent variant, one dose is markedly less so, offering only 33 per cent protection compared with 50 per cent. So far most hospital admissions and deaths caused by the Indian variant have been in unvaccinated people. Fifty-nine per cent of the 33,206 known cases and 66 per cent of the 383 known hospitalisations had had no vaccine.

So as 78% of people have had their first dose and 55% have had two I think it's obvious that hospitalisation numbers won't ever be like they were in the winter, even accounting for it being more transmittable.

user1487194234 · 11/06/2021 22:00

A bit of caution, fair enough, but as things stand I can’t see any justification for another lockdown

I'm sick of making a god of the NHS, and for us to have to give up our lives to protect it when it should be protecting us. Fuck the NHS.
Was it the NHS that failed to put India on the red list? That's why we're in this mess.

The vaccine roll out is why we aren't up shit creek and would be at the finishing line if not for that mistake.

I don't think anyone wants another lockdown.

I actually think that being sensible about mass gatherings of 1000s, masks and social distancing etc for a bit longer could well be enough to tide us over till we have cracked it a bit more with the vaccines.

I'm not sure though what the plans are for the autumn and winter to avoid another crisis then. I really hope that boosters prove effective enough to hold things back (and maybe the most vulnerable taking specifically more care).

They will be like in winter if we don't have a lockdown. Everyone always forgets we had lockdowns which stopped the rise in case numbers! If we don't take measures this time, we don't know where the numbers could get to. The more virus on circulation, the higher the viral load people are.exposed to, the worse the severity of covid generally. Selective amnesia. People say lockdowns don't work. They have saved many many people and they don't just delay the inevitable, they reduce it the number of deaths. If you let it covid run wild, many many people will suffer. Young healthy people included. People don't realise how much their health means to them until it's taken away. Health is everything.. health is life
@LucilleTheVampireBat hey no need to try and tell me ‘enough’ with anything, I’ll post EXACTLY what I want love.

Kids are quite ill with the Delta variant. Long covid is reported as a real concern and schools are starting to close again. Just like this time last year
BULLSHIT 💩

I wish people would stop spreading misinformation that they can't actually back up

I agree.
Covid fanaticism needs to stop and people need to get on with their lives.
Also the NHS needs to catch up with the backlog of other illnesses which they have ignored.
Why are most GP’s surgery’s still not open?

NeedWineNow · 11/06/2021 22:28

@PicsInRed

Agreed. The level of fear and anxiety vs the residual danger (respective to what we've usually dealt with from epidemics including flu, RSV, measles, and whooping cough) is now at the level of a mass mental illness. What is really unacceptable is that it has all been entirely intentional - "project fear", to keep people in their homes. We are now faced with the tricky business of attempting to "detraumatise" those people to get society functioning properly again.
This 100%
SonnetForSpring · 11/06/2021 22:31

The real problem is not protect fear but that it seems many people cannot actually grasp what is happening due to lack of understanding/education/thinking skills or they don't have the resilience to face what is happening and what it means for them and their lives and so they make up other random explanations like project fear because they find it less threatening than the truth.

Thewiseoneincognito · 11/06/2021 22:32

THIS

They see the low numbers and disregard the trajectory of case increases until it’s too late.

Whatshouldicallme · 11/06/2021 22:36

I'm sure the same people shouting "fuck the NHS!" are also the ones moaning about increased wait times and difficulty accessing services 🙄🙄🙄

Indeed.

"they don't have the resilience to face what is happening and what it means for them and their lives and so they make up other random explanations like project fear because they find it less threatening than the truth."

I think it is primarily this, as I can't believe after three rounds of this people still wouldn't be able to see what's right in front of them. Denial is an effective protective mechanism, though quite counter productive in this particular situation. 🤦‍♀️

southeastdweller · 11/06/2021 22:47

The MN Covid hysteria is really getting strong again, I see. It reminds me of the threads last year about people washing their supermarket shopping.

It's weird isn't it. Lots of people online who don't seem to be behaving like there is a vaccine that millions of people have had 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was the government that fucked up over the variant. It was the government thst locked down too late in March last year and over Christmas and then January.

These are probably the same village idiots that stampede around London every other Saturday marching against a virus.

THe NHS have to deal with the fallout.
