Start of third wave - what will this actually mean?

With so many of the population vaccinated what do you think a third wave means? Will we need another lockdown? 😩

*Thought the decision is being made in the next few days?

You can't just tell businesses that the restrictions will stay on the 19th June*

Do keep up every decision is the week before, it's been same at every stage.

thecatsatonthewall · 01/06/2021 21:31

@MarshaBradyo

If you google you’ll see papers all saying same

‘An announcement about the 21 June reopening will be made on 14 June’

The Guardian, also Telegraph and Reuters plus whenever else

Ah i see Its just that i heard a sage guy saying it had to be by the 8th to give firms time to rearrange.

though i 'pose the announce can be at any time after that.

MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 21:31

@PrincessNutNuts

The roadmap was based on Alpha, the Kent variant.

After 9 months we understand it pretty well.

Delta (the Indian variant) is different, and we don't understand it at all.

Ploughing ahead with the same roadmap but a different variant that has been able to seed itself all over the country during lockdown restrictions is foolhardy.

There's nothing cautious about that.

How long do you want to wait for?
Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:33

We are really through the looking glass now, as the SAGE scientists

It's not through looking glass that sage scientists have lied to us before, it's amIng how everyone forgets that time when they pubically did last year.

Oh it was a mistake we can trust them again

"Do keep up" no need for that, are you always such an arse?

No but you state thinks like they are happening at certain date, when it is completely incorrect.

loulouljh · 01/06/2021 21:36

It means nothing...scaremongering as usual. No deaths today from covid. ZERO.

They haven't lied, they just have differing opinions/ideas because this is an unprecedented situation and the science is evolving

what we knew last june is completely different to what we now know & in a years time it will be different again.

Sure but if you were correcting your work colleague (who you'd never met before) would you add a condescending "keep up"

No you wouldn't so don't do it here.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:39

Nope they lied they were pulled up on it, missused out of date figures that they knew were out of date.

It wasn't a mistake they knew what they did

Deaths got very close to zero last summer.

Tell me, @loulouljh, what happened next?

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:41

No you wouldn't so don't do it here.

This isn't a work environment so don't expect same here, you said it was decided in next few days it never has been.

RaspberryCoulis · 01/06/2021 22:03

Deaths got very close to zero last summer. Tell me, @loulouljh, what happened next?

Tell me, @NannyAndJohn, how many people were vaccinated last summer? Hmm

PrincessNutNuts · 01/06/2021 22:09

38.5% of the U.K. population is fully vaccinated now.

40.9% completely unvaccinated.

20.6% have had one dose.

We were still dealing with Old Covid last summer. The Indian Variant is approximately 1.6x1.6 = 2.56 times more transmissible than Old Covid.

And we still have over 60% unvaccinated.

RaspberryCoulis · 01/06/2021 22:15

And those 38.5% who are fully vaccinated are (mostly) in the groups most likely to die or get seriously ill, yes? Because the government prioritised them? And because of vaccination, numbers in hospital are very low, yes?

Yet here again are the doom and gloom tag team double act of Nuts and Nanny with their graphs and projections and VARIANTS.

Seriously, you two need a hobby. What are you going to bang on about when Covid is relegated to the status of "just another of those illnesses people die from every year"?

colouringcrayons · 01/06/2021 22:21

I think those who are feeling confident things are going to be OK should be wary of hubris. There was so much ridicule last year of anyone who said we were facing a second wave, the snidey remarks about 'needing a hobby', 'get a life' etc. I was on the receiving end of plenty of abuse myself for posting that the summer unlocking was too early and being worried about cases picking up once schools reopened.

Whether you feel optimistic or pessimistic about the next phase, only a total fool can't see that things are nowhere near as good as they looked six weeks ago.

Unfortunately my usual hobbies have been put on pause because of Covid. Which is why I want to get back to normal as soon as possible. Which is why we need to be on alert to rising cases and new variants.
MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 22:25

I wouldn’t say I’m certain or confident, more not yet ready to feel too depressed and that it’s not possible.

This is based on listening to scientists speak, there was one - third wave guy - who wasn’t so positive but I missed his interview unfortunately and only saw media reaction.

I do think we need the data in next two weeks so I’m wary of any posts that sound very certain.

Yep. The exact same users who were declaring the pandemic "over" last summer are the ones declaring the pandemic "over" right now. They don't learn.
MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 22:27

Also the pessimistic haven’t always been right - VE Day etc spike, not doing school before Easter, doing a firebreak

I agree with your pervious post - we just don't yet know.

However, the pessimists have been right too many times for comfort.

The most vulnerable are fully vaccinated. The one dose people, including myself, are extremely unlikely to need to go to hospital if we catch Covid.
MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 22:36

Thecats yep. We don’t know, it all comes down to hospital numbers in two weeks. Trying to keep a bit zen about it.

And they already looking and complaining about beach's even though no spikes last year.
